The Letter
She finished writing the letter with a sigh, folded it and put it an envelope. She sealed it, wrote his first name on it and carefully placed it on the table in front of her. The task now done, the question became whether she’d actually go through with it. She’d planned it out in her mind down to the last detail so she wouldn’t back out of doing it, knowing in her head that she couldn’t keep on living with herself if she didn’t. She stared at it, marveling at the stark whiteness of the envelope against the dark script of his name. The issue itself and her decision to speak up wasn’t black and white but clouded with so many shades of gray it became an unwelcome blur as she’d sat down to write. She knew it would irrevocably change the course of their friendship and the risk of losing it and him weighed heavily on her mind. Once she began to write though, it became clear to her that she had to put it all out for him to see. The nature of her job dictated the need to be observant, cognizant of details. It was something that became part of her in all aspects of her life, giving her an uncanny insight with both friends and strangers alike. She knew him well enough to know that the only way to get through to him was with the letter, talk only about him and allow the decision whether they ever spoke of it to be his and his alone. The fact that he stayed in a marriage where it was clear there was no love made her sad for him. She was sure he had his reasons for staying and respected his decisions. She let him know that everyone deserved to have love in their lives and hoped that someday he would let someone love him. She told him he was a good man. She went on to share a story with him about someone she knew that kept planning for someday and how in the blink of an eye, someday never came. She ended by telling him that no matter what happened, she was his friend and would be there for him always. If he chose to do so, they could act as if he’d never read the letter at all. They met for beers at their usual spot. She could see that he noticed her eyes weren’t as bright as normal, her responses just a little off. He reacted in his typical way of not acknowledging it. They ended their night with a hug and went their separate ways. She sat in her car just an extra few minutes, unable to start the ignition. Her mouth had become the sahara while her heart beat out a rhythm suddenly rivaling drums in her ears. Tears filled her eyes at the thought of him finding the letter she’d slipped into his jacket pocket and they began to roll down her cheeks as she pictured the look on his face when he opened it up and read the words: ’Dear Brian,’
It's better to have loved and lost than to live with a psycho the rest of your life -
“Let him go Sabine.”
“Why should I Erin?”
“Because that’s not why we’re here, we aren’t supposed to be tormenting him.”
“Maybe I want him to suffer; maybe that’s what he deserves.”
“Look, I’m not going to let you play with him, either do your job or let him go.”
“What about your job? Seems to me that I’m not the only one going off book here, maybe I should call home and let them know exactly what you’ve been up to.”
“Go ahead, but then they’ll know you’re screwing shit up too.”
“Maybe, but somehow I don’t think they’ll be upset at what I’m doing.”
“So are you going to let him go or not?”
“Oh Sweetie, how can I make his life a living hell, if I’m not in it every day?”
“All right then.”
Cat leaned her head against the brick wall and closed her eyes. “Well, at least I’ve got the place to myself,” she thought. She heard a door open and footsteps coming towards her cell. After a few minutes of silence she started getting irritated. “What the fuck? Are they just gonna stand there and stare at me all day?” she thought. Finally they made some noise by clearing their throat. It made Cat jump a little and she hoped they hadn’t noticed. She was trying to appear calm and unconcerned about her circumstances. They cleared their throat again.
“Look asshole, I’m trying to take a nap, so why don’t you just tell me what you want or go the fuck away,” she replied.
“Why’d you do it Erin? Why’d you kill her? Why the FUCK did you kill my wife?”
Her eyes flew open at the sound his voice. She couldn’t believe he was here. She had figured she wouldn’t see him again, at least not until the trial, but here he was. Cat started to smile, but then she noticed that Brian’s face was blank. It scared the hell out of her.
“I’m waiting Erin,” he said.
“Shit, he’s using my real name, not Cat,” she thought. She couldn’t tell him the truth, she didn’t know how. Cat shrugged her left shoulder and said, “Maybe I didn’t like her…maybe I was jealous ….maybe I wanted to hurt you or maybe…I wanted to save you. Maybe it’s all of them. Does it really matter? Would knowing my reasons change how you feel? ” She had to look away or the tears would start and she wasn’t going to cry, at least not in front of him.
Loveless - Tabby dropped into the seat besides Brian’s wife at the bar. “Hey.” This didn’t seem an occasion for formalities, like first names and shit. Tabby gestured to the bartender for a drink. “Won’t keep you long. But let me explain it to you real fucking simple. I don’t like you. And I don’t like what you do to Brian. You’re a manipulative fucking bitch who found a good man’s weakspot.” Taking a sip of her vodka, she pulled on every cold, hardass fibre of her being to get the message across. “Get a divorce. Quick, clean, 'irreconcilable difference' type one where you don’t go after his retirement pension. And then get the fuck out of his life. If you don’t, I will have the ever-loving shit beaten out of you before I fuck with every other part of your life.” Taking another sip, wrinkling her nose at the burn, Tabby slid off the stool. Even sitting this close to the woman made her angry and the idea of breaking the nose on that beautiful, lying face was growing way too tempting. “One day, little bitch. That’s how long you got to get this shit started, because I’m not going to sit here while you keep breaking Brian’s heart for a moment longer.”
loveless - What Jordan witnessed between Brian and his wife seemed more of a business arrangement than a marriage. Even though she knew it was none of her business, she approached him and handed him the card of a divorce lawyer, leaving it up to him whether he’d acknowledge it and make the call.
Brian took a look at the card and crumpled it up, about to toss it away but then sticking it in his pocket. "Nice bedside manner" he grumbled.
She kept her distance as always, following the half-a-year Mrs Gamble and taking pictures of her unfaithful acts with other men. And some women. She felt like a stalker, but Brian deserved to know and she couldn't tell him face to face.
After just a few days, she was content with the intel she'd gathered. Not just pictures, but small snippets of conversations from when she'd dared to get closer. Now, she saved the lot into a file and attached it to a message which she sent to Gamble before she could change her mind.
She just hoped she'd done the right thing.
Brian received the email from an unknown address. He almost didn't open it thinking it was probably spam, but the pictures inside had nearly stopped his heart.
Why would someone just send this to him like that? Was it a person that had some sort of crush on him and was trying to get him back on the market? Was it a cruel joke? The options swirled in his head as he continued going through the information.
Loveless
Celeste had left Los Angeles as soon as she read about the engagement in the picture, "Brian Gamble to wed...." she couldn't stand seeing him everywhere knowing how things ended between them and now he was getting married. The woman he was engaged to was manipulative, narcissistic, unfaithful and very disloyal to him, she treated him as if he was her property and took pride in him making sacrifices he didn't want to make, one being that he needed to never see Celeste again. The condition was probably for the best if they expected to ever move on from each other but at the end of every day Celeste would watch the old videos of them together and she would drive by the bar that they met in and Brian's bike would be there. The day of the wedding came and went, she couldn't bring herself to go near that chapel and object to their marriage, instead she stayed home and drank herself through the weekend while going through a string of one night stands and bar fights. She wanted anything to take the pain away from her but it stayed to the point where it started getting worse, he wasn't just in her dreams anymore, he started showing up in random places wherever she went. Finally she decided that she couldn't stay away from him anymore, she didn't bother packing or making a plan before hopping on a flight back to LA.
When she landed in Los Angeles she wasn't sure whether or not to confront him immediately or if she should have some kind of evidence to prove her point that his new bride truly didn't love him. She rented a car, got a hotel room and decided to trail the new Mrs. Gamble for a few days, during her trail she discovered not only was she having several affairs, but she was also laundering money out of her pastry business. She couldn't believe everything that she had seen and by the time she had gathered all her evidence to bring to Brian, the envelope was so thick she couldn't even close it. This wouldn't be enough for him though, breaking the law would've steamed him and the affairs would infuriate him but the way that this woman worked, he probably would've blamed himself for the affairs then helped her get away with her crimes. As she sat in her car parked three houses down from his, she stared at the envelope and wondered if she should really do this or not but then she saw him coming down the road on his Harley. She was honestly surprised that his new bride didn't make him get rid of that, she had taken away everything else he loved what was one more thing?
Celeste couldn't wait any longer, she drove up near the house as Brian got off his bike and pulled up beside him, "get in," she demanded subtly,
"Ti ... Celeste, the fuck are you doing here?"
"Brian we need to talk, just please get in the car so I don't have to do this in front of your house, please?"
Brian was reluctant but he got into the car and Celeste drove from the house, "here, you need to look at this," she handed him the envelope while she drove down the freeway. As Brian looked over everything his breathing became deeper, his jaw tightened and his hands clenched the papers and photos, before she knew it he went through the envelope and started staring out the passenger side window.
"Pull over"
"Brian ..."
"I SAID PULL OVER!"
She took the next exit then pulled into the nearest gas station, for a while they just sat there in silence not knowing what each other was thinking then Brian broke the ice.
"Why ..." his voice was raspy and cracked, he sounded more than upset but she couldn't tell what he was feeling.
"I don't know why she did it, she obviously doesn't love you but I don.."
Brian soon cut her off in a rage, "no, I mean why did you come back? You're the one that ended things, you're the one who left town and thought that we shouldn't be together so why come back now? Why show me this? Why the fuck do you care so much to go through all this trouble? What did an alarm go off in your head that warned you that I might be happy so you had to come back? Jesus Celeste!"
Celeste wasn't sure what to say, she had broken things off and she had left him, "... but you're not. You're not happy Brian and I know that because you were happy with me, you weren't spending every night at the bar or pulling in extra hours so you wouldn't have to go home early and you certainly didn't look like this. I've never seen you look so miserable. Brian ... she doesn't love you, she's never loved you and I think you know that, I didn't even need all this to prove it. She likes to control you, to have power over you and didn't you once tell me that no one owns you? Well now she does and I can't bare to see it anymore, that's why I came back ... because I love you too much to just walk away from this and let you live the rest of your life miserable and unloved when I can make you happy."
She took two tickets from her bag and showed them to him, "I love you, I can't stay away from you, I need you and I know we can find a way to make this work. Come with me, just for the weekend and let me show you just how much I love you and want you, if you don't I'm just going to keep coming back because I will always come back for you. I will fight for you with everything I am and have and you know that I will die before I let anything hurt you again. I'm sorry, I'm sorry that I hurt you and I'm sorry that I left you, it wont happen again. So what do you say?"
He watched her for a long moment, trying to wrap his head around everything that she'd said, reading her face to see if she meant it.
"You have no idea how much I want to say yes." He ran a hand through his hair and sighed deeply. "You're right, about everything." he shook his head and looked into her eyes. "And I missed you. More than I could ever tell you."
