Inspired off of @halluvic Batfam Blurb about a nonchalantly neglected reader idea. Which I think is so much fun for such an angst-filled fandom! High-key my go to thought everytime a neglected fic is missing the revenge.
It’s so poetically perfect that the vigilante family that tends to forget you exist is oblivious to just how many adventures you have. Adventures that are more than the stiff and occasional reports from Alfred about your acrobatics to reach a cookie drawer. No, your adventures are borderline Constantine levels of wackiness and severity.
Think interdimensional bad-actors and fighting your own alternate versions! Before you’re even scraping double digits, you’ve saved the multiverse more than once. Your notoriety for nothing other than the first name you identify yourself with, being sung in tales of great legends. All for you to be tucked happily in bed by nightfall.
Bruce and the others are none the wiser. Thinking that when they occasionally see you and pat your little head, that you’re oblivious to their alternate identities and are living the normal life they’ve ordained to be proper for you. That’s exactly what they do when they have Alfred fetch you before they go on another business seminar ie, a Justice League level threat well beyond the Earth’s solar system. They barely give a thought to Damian, who’s just a few years your senior, is going but you—like the perfect little cutout they seem to think you are—don’t complain a single bit while they drive away. How perfect of you!
It isn’t until they’re well beyond the realm of anticipated villains, something far darker than just Darkseid attempting to destroy Earth again, but something that brings a threat to all of reality. The creature that’s summoned renders the Justice League to nothing but twigs as it bulldozes through Darkseid and his forces and the strongest among their ranks. With a single snap of it’s claws, it very well might destroy the Earth, and for once, even Batman is at a loss.
“WITH THIS I END YOUR–Oh wait, hold on! Hold the phone! Drop it and break it into a million pieces. Is this THE BATMAN?”
The gargantuan threat shrinks down and cartoonishly holds up Batman and the Robins, all the destruction coming to a stop as they coo at the entire Batfamily. Superman, Wonder-woman, and all in attendance can’t help but weakly watch as their greatest foe simply diverts into some reality-warping fangirl.
“OMG, so you guys must be the family to THE GREAT (Y/N)!? What an honor!”
They proceed to conjure various (Y/n) merchandise that they ask the family to sign, all for Batman to use their autographs as a bargaining chip to not tear this dimension and their planet to shreds.
“Oh yeah! Well of course, I won’t do that with (Y/n) here! Mad respect for that homie of mine! Anyway, tell them I said hi and I’m still healing from our time back in Earth #3495830485. Haha, good times.”
Balance is restored instantly, and the whole time home everyone is nursing their life-threatening wounds as they ponder. Specifically on WHO THE HECK IN GOTHAM CITY IS (Y/N)?! Because clearly, the people who claim to be your family genuinely don’t know you at all. And as much as usual scowl behind his cowl fools the JL about how much Bruce knows about his own kid, he’s forced to reconcile that he knows next to nothing. Alfred’s reports, as much as they’ve dwindled over the past year, just aren’t accurate enough to miss this huge part of your character.
“Welcome back, Master Bruce. I trust your trip went swell?”
“Where’s (Y/n)?”
“In their room, but they’re currently napping. Why the sudden interest?”
“....”
“(Y/n) somehow saved us from an Eldritch goddess of reality, just by mere mention of their name. We have a lot to talk about.”
“...I see, Master Damien. I’ll be bringing up some cookies for this conversation.”
Before they even speak to you, they’re already scanning you and holding you every which way to see some visible sign that you might be this intergalactic force that completely slipped past their radar.
“Talk! What have you been hiding!?”
“I…haven’t really been hiding anything.”
“Look (Y/n), this is a safe space we’re listening now.”
“...I’m literally not hiding anything.”
“Yeah, Kid, and I’m Lady Liberty. Spill.”
“Uh, pretty sure you died before, how bout you spill.”
“(Y/n), will you please tell me about yourself for real this time.”
“..hmm okay.”
It’s Bruce who really comes to terms with how much he’s missed, even before you tell him about that particular experience with that Eldritch entity. He sees the way you can’t look into his eyes for more than 5 seconds. Or how all your stuffed animals are near your bed like you cuddle up to them at night. Or the small, untouched spider web hanging near your bedpost.
It almost feels like when he lost Jason.
He failed. He has failed you. Having no choice but to come to terms when he hears you explain the intricacies of the multiverse and how you’ve gotten the majority of them to leave your world alone. His heart-stone-cold and walled up, melting when you talk about how the other universe’s batfamilies immediately embraced you. Doppelgangers who, by rules of the multiverse, should want to kill you, loving you in a way you’ve never been loved. Interdimensional entities coming to visit, teaching you the different parts of growing up that you had no one to talk to you about.
“I will be better for you, (Y/n). I promise.”
“Uh okay…Can you shut the door when you leave?”
“....yes.”
“Thanks.”
The reward that other Yandere Batfamilies receive with a reconciliation is the emotional prize. You’re in tears, your angry-blow-up, and the cold verbal smackdown that you deliver tells them that you’re broken and you desperately need them. Or you’re clearly so hurt that they have no choice but to forcefully soothe you’re aching feelings. But without the emotional getback, it leaves them reaching out constantly to soothe their own mounting guilt.
“Uhm (Y/n) do you maybe want to go for ice-cream with your big brother? I’ve got some extra time and I–’
“No thanks, I’m hanging out with DP today.”
“But it’s been so long–”
“Nope. Bye.”
—----
“Hey, Oracle and I are leading patrol. Today's an easy day so just this once we don’t mind bringing you with us—”
“Don’t wanna.”
“Uhhh, why not? Didn’t we say we were going to get to know each other?”
“You did. I didn’t, it’s cool I know enough.”
“Even about our cool hero lives?”
“Especially about your mid hero lives.”
__________
“Birth sibling! You will join me in this movie marathon! In order for success within the school I must be up to date on the Terminator movies.”
“I’ll save you the time. The past is always in danger all the time, and if you are Sarah Conner, change your name.”
“I think you forgot that Ra’s Al Ghul doesn’t allow failure. And this will double as time to get to know one another so you’ll be coming with me!”
“I think you forgot who has access to portals to leave whenever they want. So no.”
Needless to say, the family has their work cut out for them. Especially since you’re so much more than just a little kid. Your little kid with the world at their fingertips. Not to mention the other league members who feel like they should be aware of the powerful force their adversaries keep raving about.
Imagine getting isekai’d into your latest hyperfixation: an otome game filled with charming characters going gaga for the player. Constant love triangles and a touch of magic, you’re leaping to finally enact some of the scenes you’ve spent hours replaying. Oh but who can forget! You’re not exactly alone.
“Ew what is this place? Why is it so sparkly.”
“This is the game I told you about! The one with all my new crushes!”
“Great. I’m just glad we didn’t get hit by a truck to get here.”
Your dear friend is along for the ride and you feel like this is just perfect! All that time you’ve spent raving over the different routes and your favorite moments; they’re familiar enough with the world. Still they let you lead getting all the way to the climax of the tutorial where all the candidates make an appearance.
“We’ll be in the same study group. What’s your name again?”
You open your mouth. Prepared to embrace the introduction with the illusive Ice Prince himself you’ve dreamt about. But your voice is giving out and the pumping in your chest overwhelms you and when those golden eyes squint at you in rising scorn. There’s no way you can speak now.
“Uh they’re (Y/n) and I’m Emy. Nice to meet ya!”
Their easy nonchalant introduction is the start of an adventure and the end of your dream. Their persistent uncaring attitude towards events or the array of colorful personality traits in the battlier doesn’t phase a practiced extrovert such as they. Casually resembling the answers programmed for players to say and deviating at the perfect times. All so easily the whole lot of the love interests are so obviously head over heels for her in no time.
Leaving you behind.
Competitions meant to improve teamwork are lead by Emy. Study topics are chosen by Emy. Hang out spaces are where Emy decides. What challenges the group takes on are ordained because Emy wants to. Sparring sessions are always with Emy.
Everything begins to be centered around Emy.
“Emy…you’re amazing.”
“You’ll be my greatest rival yet, Emy!”
“Chu chu Marry me Emy! I’m just kidding…unless?”
“I’ve never met anyone like you Emy!”
While you can’t bring yourself to hate Emy because at the end of the day it makes you happy that Emy is happy. It still hurts. It still makes your chest heavy when the group is already headed to the sparring arena without you. It still makes you eyes water when there’s no space at the lunch table for you. It still hurts when you’ll hear about something monumental that Emy did from someone else who’s spouting some legendary feat.
It hurts that your bias, hears your name and still asks who.
And it still hurts when the friendliest of the group, asks that you switch seats so that they can be closer to her.
And it burns more than anything to not be able to talk to your friend like you used to.
“Hey Emy I was wondering–”
“Sorry I’m just so wiped out from the honors awards can we talk later.”
_____
“Emy did you understand the lesson?”
“Haha uhh sorry what did you say (Y/n)?”
“I was asking–”
“Haha okay your crazy. Uh ask the teacher or something I have to go!”
_______
“Emy…do you ever think about going home?”
“Hmmm no.”
“Really? Like never?”
“Nope I love it here.”
“Ah okay…”
It’s an interesting problem. Should you let yourself be consumed with guilt when you begin to wish you were in Emy’s place? Is it main-character syndrome if you clearly never were? Is it bad that you want to go home now that you know this is nothing like the game you used to play? It all culminates into a new goal.
One for you to return home.
So instead of walking alone at the back of the group; you confine yourself to the library or the study with one purpose. Nose deep in books and scrolls you desperately search for a lead. Some way that you can return back to the world you know. Back to where you weren’t just a side character fading in the background.
“Oi rainy parade! What are you doing?”
This interruption was brought by the low-tier villain. Temple was an adversary to the mc during the first competitions. Beaten easily and humiliated they fade into obscurity before leaving for good. But for whatever reason they’re standing above you, waiting for you to answer. Swallowing an exhausted sigh you try to brush them off; ignoring bullies was the best way to get them to go away.
“Reading.”
“Yeah but what are you reading?”
“Just research…do you need something?”
“Yeah, join our group!”
Its then you’re acutely aware of who’s walking up behind him, stomach sinking when you realize precisely who they are. All of them are minor to major villains within the otome game with varying degrees of just beating mc to encapsulating the world in dark magic. So you weren’t exactly thrilled to see them all on board with you, specifically.
“Look if this is about revenge against Emy I’m not interested.”
“Revenge on who, now?” It was Starle, a known glutton that acted as the apathetic competitor. Currently crunching on some crackers, you tried to recall if that arc had even occurred yet. Coming up with blanks because you were so out of the loop when it came to Emy now…
Temple sighs and sits on the desk in front of you, forcing you to put the book down.
“Look if you’re talking about Emy I’m so over that I’m onto bigger things.”
“Like what kind?”
“The kind that can help you make a portal.”
Its Ryder Winsor, the aforementioned high-tier villain who’s well on their way to planning world domination by now. Only seeing him in passing you’re not only blown away by that outlandish statement but by the suaveness that the mc is built to fall prey to on a few occasions. Their smiles don’t assure you but your certain if anyone can beat them in the end it will be Emy…so in the meantime why not take advantage?
“Okay but anything too violent is completely off the table.”
“Deal. Welcome to our group (Y/n) we’re all so incredibly happy that you’re here.”
For once in a long time that doesn’t turn out to be a lie because now the time you’d quietly spend off to the side is filled with banter or one-sided ranting. Lunches spent alone are filled with very serious taste-testing of different snacks. Study sessions are now becoming unproductive because of all the time you spend laughing. Nights you spend lying awake waiting for the sun to come up are spent chatting about the mundane and the grandiose.
This what a real team feels like. What real friends are like. You almost forgot.
When you do remember to look over at the beaming Emy, you’re happy to say that nothing sparks guilt or envy. You’re happy too now and that’s enough for you.
What isn’t enough for Emy is when they’re caught off guard by one of their teacher’s praises, “Congratulations on getting that member out of your group! I think without them the power dynamics will finally even out.”
Whoa whoa a member left the group?!
Emy does a headcount at lunch, finding all the familiar smiling faces except for one. They shook their head as punishment for forgetting. (Y/n) had started sitting away from the group because it was so overcrowded at their favorite table….right? Is it bad that Emy can’t remember that conversation? So they scan the cafeteria looking over the students who admirably stared back at them to one of the few who weren’t. Lunches in one hand and arms linked with someone else that dastardly mean boy from the first magic competition—Temple. They remember that night you going over all the ins and outs of the world; so grateful back then that she had you on their team able to predict the exact sequence that they’d be attacked. Did they ever thank you for that? Either they look to see just who their chatting so animatedly with and it’s none other than you. Laughing almost loud enough over the din of the cafeteria, it dawns on Emy how it’s been awhile since they’ve seen it. Leaned on by another face you vaguely warned her about who does spare a glance in her direction before turning back to you. Maybe they’ll get your attention, since they have it so readily.
“Hey (Y/n)?! (Y/n)?!”
Calling out to you doesn’t work since you’re already out of the cafeteria on the way to wherever you’re going and the one that did see her doesn’t seem interested in passing along her message. Emy doesn’t take it to heart finally answering the concerned members of her battlier, her friends about what was on her mind.
“Did you know (Y/n), left?”
“Who’s that—OW!”
“That’s the one that tags along with our group alot, right?”
“I was aware when the teacher gave me their final resignation to sign, why?”
Emy’s face heats uncontrollably, how did they miss this? Shaking it off they move on, settling their nerves with the fact that they’ll catch you later. After all a change in party doesn’t mean a change in class.
“Oh no (Y/n) transferred out of this class a week ago. They moved up to advanced ancient magics to match their battlier. Why, would you like to go there as well?”
“N-n-no I’m just checking. Thank you, Professor.”
They shake it off again, they are dormmates so Emy has nothing to worry about. Granted in the past they’re usually so tired, they can manage to stay up to have this conversation. Tonight she’ll get to the bottom of your sudden absence.
She waits diligently, constantly looking to the door and perking up when others footsteps pass by the door. Eventually with coursework done and the moon high in the sky they pace as they wait for you to come. Finally the lock to the door jiggles and behind it unfamiliar laughter…wait who is that?+
The door opens to reveal you and behind you the Scorpion twins. Another pair of handsome faces you warned her against and at one point raved about your mixed feelings about them. Why were the casually poking at you and then grabbing your stuff and leaving? Wait a minute your side of the room is incredibly barren when did that happen?
“Uh hi I didn’t know you were having friends over…”
“Oh we’re not staying we just came to get the last of their stuff!”
“Yup because someone apparently doesn’t like being bed buddies with me anymore!”
“I never said that! I just miss my bed and it beats going back and forth.”
“Y’know I really think you should’ve taken Winsor’s advice and just bought all this stuff again.”
“Don’t cry about it they’re just sentimental keepsakes, not because of any other reason.”
Emy doesn’t miss the grey eyed glare they both give her.
“(Y/n) can I talk to you…alone?”
You huff clearly annoyed, “I’d rather not, besides they’re going in and out of the room anyway. Just say what you want to say.”
Emy resists the urge to roll their eyes at your difficulty but still they confront you. Ask about why you left and what you’re doing hanging out with those guys—the villains you warned her about. You surprise her with a broken look on your face, “You really don’t know?”
Emy can do nothing but shrug as she tries to rack her brain for some reason. Finding none she expectantly waits for you to tell her. Just like back then. You refuse to do this again.
“You know what…they’re my friends and they’re helping me out with something important to me.”
“Wait what’s important to you?”
“....Goodbye Emy, Rogue I’m ready to go. For good.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice we finished ages ago.”
When Emy stares at your back and then the shutting of the door then to the empty side of the room, she feels as though a new hole has been made. She figures that's just in this moment when she doesn’t have anyone else shuffling in the room tonight. That it’s just in the moment when she’s in sparring and she can’t help but take more hits then necessary without you on her back. That’s its just in the moment that she’s overcome with disgust when you’re up on the podium with the Winsor’s crest on your newly fitted uniform. That’s just a coincidence that as she watches you hug the members of the team before giving a speech that she’s overcome with a hatred for the smug teammates of yours.
Who is she kidding?
Emy hates this.
That somehow you’d find comfort in the very people who were shaping up to be her worst enemies yet. That you looked happy getting your personal bubble invaded by these overly touchy villains. That you no longer looked in her direction when you passed in the halls.
She was just so angry. At you? At herself? At them?
Even her own team had begun to notice. Asking why she hadn’t dodged something so simple or why she’d been blankly staring at the door of the study room while they tried to talk. Trying to follow her gaze when she slowed in the hall.
“Emy….did they do something to you we don’t know about.”
“What about that one? Their new member…WAIT isn’t that our old–”
“So it’s them. What did they do to you Emy you can tell us.”
She struggles with what to say. Looking in the eyes of the future heroes and leaders of this world. Their magic and beauty palpitating endlessly at her beck and call. What dare she say to them? That she failed you? That she neglected her best friend? That she took advantage of the one person who knew what this world was all about? “That (Y/n) is being deceived by Winsor’s battlier? And if we don’t intercept soon they’re going to be in bigger trouble than ever!”
Of course seeing their hero love of their life so passionate about something and having been right so many times before all they can do is rally behind. Beginning their plan of attack so that Emy can make amends save their friend who’s been led astray. Hopefully before its too late.
On the complete opposite side of the spectrum Winsor’s Battlier is more than enjoying their new member. Of course they figured as much after spending just as much time watching you before taking initiative in action. In truth after Temple’s defeat they all felt the need to monitor the group with the most potential. Analyzing each of their members with the upmost scrutiny all so that, they’d be prepared should they ever have to cross them again. But someone stood out in that group. More than the royalty….more than their dark mage…more than the shining star that had the whole school eating out the palm of her hand.
You.
“Report everyone.”
“I witnessed that (Y/n)-fellow categorize and list the abilities of all their competitors.”
“I saw (Y/n) switch out that gift to the prince for something else.”
“(Y/n) was the one who solved the answer for the quiz the very day it was coming…it was 100 pages.”
“I saw (Y/n) kiss the University’s Dragon.”
“...”
“...”
“...what?”
It was clear to your newly avid stalkers that you were what gave the team such an easy start. Hearing you remind Emy about the likes and dislikes of your team-members. Subtly hinting at the right answers during team events. Solving all the quizzes and tests meant to stump even the well educated. All to walk behind the group who barely remembers you exist.
Even Starle felt bad watching you be ignored and pushed aside. That doesn’t immediately spark their desire to have you in their group, in fact more than happy that the team’s greatest asset just wasn’t realized. Allowing the twins to provide fairly decent obstacles that had Emy discredit you on more than one occasion. Feeling as though they maintained the silent upper hand over Emy’s team, they felt that their job to take down the group was done. Now they're stalking just for ‘fun’ at this point; chatting over study group about what injustice (Y/n) has gone through today.’
But Ryder wasn’t done. Rarely has he ever witnessed or read about a prophetic ability so inconsistent, yet terribly precise. So while the others are used to standing over roofs or abandoned attics to watch, Ryder goes a step further. Crafting a magical spy glass that he uses to watch your private activities. One of these activities meant transcribing all that you know about the villains to come. Imagine his surprise when, he reads that his failure will be at the hands of Emy all because she discovers an ancient magic technique to counter his magic. A tiny voice in his head suggests he permanently shut you up…find some way to silent your all-knowing machinations to a team bound to collapse on itself. But when he invokes invisibility raises his hand to hex you for good; hearing your sobs under the covers the magic naturally flickers away. A new spell dancing along his fingertips that put you into a deep sleep. When he stands above you with the covers pulled back he can’t help but laugh to himself in disbelief. Who was he kidding? To believe he hadn’t just wanted to get know more of you from the start, making up some excuse about your good advice so that his team would be none the wiser. All for them to fall for exactly what captivated him from the start.
“So boss, do we get to have them?”
“Patience Starle dream magic doesn’t change a mind in one night.”
“In the meantime do we get to work on the other plan?”
“The world dominating one?”
“...Once our final member joins we can put everything into full swing.”
“That Emy-chic will be the first to go, right?”
“Correct. Because a coward such as they has no place in our new world.”
The deliciously familiar scenario of the reversal of powers. Here you are among the gaggle of scientists marveling at three specimens of the previously fabled Merpeople. Two violent eel-like types and a single incredibly shy octopus type. In the beginning you blend in with the other unsuccessful scientists, each trying their various methods and experiments only to find their perplexing demeanors to be unwilling to participate. Every other freak of nature they’d contained was on land and susceptible to the sting of an electric shock. But electricity and water don’t mix! So the investors can only whine and huff when the scientists can only do so much.
Of course alternative forms of punishment are looked into—a closed tasing collar, light starvation, removing of decor. But the thing that all options require is contact and that could not be done without their giant tanks being filled with the blood of poor workers with no family to report them missing.
“Let’s just do what we can team…I don’t know how much longer we’ll be babysitting these circus freaks.”
Seemingly at an impossible obstacle, many scientists have begun to simply laze about overly analyzing the few samples retrieved at their capture. You, the same as all your peers, are no different one day walking along side the observational window of the tank. Eyes carelessly looking into the artificial cobalt of the salty water, you don’t expect to make eye contact with the heterochromatic eyes of the Merman. After all, the specimens never once respond to anything beyond the glass…it was deducted that they didn’t understand the concept of a window thus they ignored it.
But it—he—was looking at you. Smiling at you.
Following your steps as you walked along the hall.
That was…kind of new.
Naturally your feet stopped as to admire the living fairytale come to life, expecting to see the mer dash away. It stays. What you recognize as a human smirk decorates their face they halt their swimming, treading easily with their tail as they mirror your stature.
This suggested obvious awareness.
Obvious sentience.
Which wasn’t considered at all among your peers or the hunters who caught them.
Unironically you leap for joy. Turning to see that the Mer is still there, you brain leaps to other shows of intelligence.
Now this may have been an error on your part but you tilt your head to the side. A playful gesture mirrored by some human’s greatest companions. Yet they follow and when you excitedly run off to report to your peers they stay just that way.
“I know you might feel prone to sleep, but I think you should at least try to keep the dreaming out of our reports.”
It might be jealousy…or real disbelief but they aren’t convinced. Your head scientist excited you still dream and urging you to keep your head down only a month more and this investor will disregard any ethical benefits from these creatures. You may nod your head but you were never going to listen.
If these creatures were sentient than it’d be a great disservice not to properly accommodate them.
“Alright my friend let’s see what you can do!”
So you start with puzzles walking along that same route. Once the mer stops the incessant circling of their massive tank they come to the window, interestingly showing off your mRubix cube. Solving it, you show it off before tossing a duplicate into the tank. Granted you had to slip past armed guards to reach the surface but instead of leaping at you with rows of teeth. Instead the Rubix cube is grasped and dragged under. Your mer playing with it for hours before they toss the puzzle out the surface of their tank.
Seeing the slight interest of your peers you continue. Continuing to give more and more puzzles to the single mer, eagerly awaiting their visible joy at a new one. It isn’t long before the glass of the tank on the other side is being banged against. The other eel-mer pouts until you gather that they want a puzzle too. It isn’t much longer till your graced with the rare appearance of a tentacle against the glass, practically begging for the same thing.
Over the moon, you delight in their liveliness. Soon after attempting to sign and even beginning to speak to them directly. Your revival of the project has dividends pouring in; scientists following your lead and realizing that incentives other than food do work for them.
In this new age, you are director of subject well-being. In charge of keeping them compliant and willing for tests. Consistently aiding your fellow scientists when it comes to properly handling your new friends subjects. Surprisingly not everyone knows that the mers have preferences when it comes to rewards. But that’s what you’re here for.
It isn’t long before you able to have full- on conversations but the conditions to initiate such a thing must be perfect. The cameras can’t have any sound. It must only be their Subject Well-Being Director a.k.a you. And on these days said director is supposed to feed them.
The stipulations were detailed by the illusive octopus. Which was all stipulated on a slightly damp notebook sent by a lone tentacle in the face of the head scientist when he was especially urgent to hear them speak.
But routines hardly ever stay the same….especially when investors influence the scientic process. New scientists, heavily armed security, and seedy advisors who just adore peeking over your soldier when you talk the mers through blood-draws.
At the same time that they benefit in engagement as deeply thinking mers, there’s too much push-back when you argue some of the policies of their capture. Leveling their brilliance of humans the ethic wrongness convicts you to advocate. But whether it’s for plausible deniability or lack of understanding your ignored on that front. Further putting you on the outskirts of your team as things start to change.
“Ahem we just want a chance for the new blood to try this out.”
“It’s not anything against you we just want to give everyone the chance to look at our special subjects.”
Yeah, like you believed the new-blood with a perky chest and rose-red lips was actually interested in seeing if they could facilitate a more positive relationship with the subjects. It didn’t help that the biggest sponsors name was proudly on their lab coat. So you’re honest with your subjects….is that an obstacle in the scientific process…maybe….but you figure your subjects would appreciate the warning.
Seeing as it was such a huge failure you’re no longer threatened by scientists who hope to stimulate their own positive relationship with the specimens but instead those who are hoping for something closer to negative.
“Dr. (Y/n) this is General Kater he’ll be instilling the necessary discipline that our specimens need.”
Ignoring the decline in deaths since you’ve established contacts the increasing nosy investors want to capitalize and ‘gently asking’ is just not good enough for them. Their assessment, made after glancing at the reports is that ‘good cop, bad cop’ strategy will be best to get what they want. Conceding with you that they are in fact sentient…just not enough to be freed.
“Don’t be alarmed, gentlefish as your commander in chief, I only want the best from you and no less. Your usual doctor’s going to handle your petty tests…but when they’re not you’ll be with me. And I will be working your mermaid***** until your pretty little scales fall off!”
It’s hard to watch the General assault the water with a device that screeches loudly and has them all writhing in pain. Forced to perform like circus animals when the General wants to show their athletic capabilities. More than ever the tiny voice within you screams that you must help them in some kind of way.
When you finally do get to examine them, it only nails the head in further that the time you have to salvage these subjects—no your patients is coming to a close. Even with their green and purple skin the bruises are still dark as the bags under their eyes. Citing these signs of distress mean nothing to your superiors who are much too invested in the general’s vision.
“I’m going to get you guys out of here. Just hang on for me.”
Legally you can’t do much of anything but you know quite a few groups who can. Anonymously contacting the notable activist groups you know with some life-changing info. Of course you know better than to give your card and details instead helping an already exploitable hole they just didn’t discover yet. You can’t really communicate it to your patients considering your sessions are recorded but you do your best to give your best wishes.
“I just wanted to say that if you do ever get home. It was an honor getting to learn about you all, thank you.”
“So sentimental…are you planning on leaving?”
“No Jade. I think as long as you guys are around I’m not going anywhere.”
When it does happen, it genuinely shocks you. It’s months after your anonymous tips that the activists make their move. By the time you arrive to the lab, you’ll find that the tanks are empty and shattered multiple lasered holes in the interior of the building. It’s alarming as it suggests such heavy artillery was used to break them out that even the most eager rebels would have trouble getting their hands on.
“Blast those hippies! I’ll have to organize my elite squad, we’re tracking them down and making them pay!”
While the troops are rallied and the rest of the lab is spent bustling with anxiety, you hand in your two weeks. When your boss who’d waved you off before listening, who promoted you to a director, who hired the general with confidence asks you why; you sigh and hold your head.
“This project was already developing in a direction I didn’t like. I think if they went willingly or not its a sign that this getting much bigger than I ever expected.”
“I hope if we find them again you’ll be open to consulting.”
“Maybe.”
Thus you’re back to the civilian life as you watch the news about the company’s unfortunate standing and lost investments. Including some minor evidence of the mythical creatures they could’ve made or discovered. It makes you complacent as you go through life entirely unsuspecting of whatever truly became of your patients until there’s a desperate knock on your door.
When you open it, there’s a battered man on your doorstep. Out of breath and looking desperately with you.
“Please you’re the one who helped us! HELP US with THEM please!”
When he fully collapses at your feet, you drag him to your couch and lightly apply ice to the wounds you find. Eventually he wakes. Startled and frantic he refuses to sit still and instead demands you come with him. Usually you’d hesitate to listen, thinking this is some outrageous scam. But the dark clothes they wear, the puncture wounds edging the bruises, stunned horror frozen on their face even when they sleep. It looks much too familiar to be a random animal attack.
So you get in their car, with fake plates, and suspicious mileage. Not protesting even as the car turns into the forest and you bounce along with the car on this unbeaten path. As you pull into a previously cordoned off lake, you finally speak up.
“A lake?! Don’t you know they’re all saltwater species.”
He scoffs,”Yeah the problem is we couldn’t make it to the sea.”
Before you can ask more you’re finally at the edge of the lake where there are torn clothes and abandoned equipment. Although you can’t spot a single bloodstain the smell of the lake permeates with must that suggested that the innards of the lake had made their way past the dock. None of it bode well. You slowly unlocked the door, stepping out of the truck. Expecting your chauffeur to join you; you're shocked by their desperate effort to close the door you stepped out of.
“Aren’t you coming?”
“Are you kidding? I’m not getting any closer to those monsters. I’ll be parked closer to the road.”
You want to reprimand him but who can blame him. You’ve witnessed decorated military men scuttle away like lambs after coming in contact with your patients. It’s honestly a miracle that this guy is willing to continue the mission, that is if it wasn’t a lie.
Even without the fear of you being attacked like these unfortunate activists it still makes you nervous to stand alone at the mouth of the lake. Debating between calling out or putting a hand in the water you figure knowing them it’s better to sit and wait. So that’s what you do even as the sun goes down and your eyes droop.
“You really shouldn’t be falling asleep in a place like this.”
The sentence infiltrates your psyche before you’ve truly awoken. The memory of that harmonious baritone behind a jagged maw. The stench of salt burning your nostrils feeling all too real you open your eyes to see them. Bioluminescence shining against the abyss of the lake forcing your gaze to focus on the dangling light for prey.
A neon iris deceptively close.
A string of violet reflections showing off the swirling suckers of spiraled limbs their center vaguely showing a figure all too familiar to you.
It’s like a reunion, to ask how their faring, about their escape met with their casual responses and snickers about the mess they left behind. You hesitate to bring up the fate of those who’ve helped them. To question in their very coherent opinion why they’ve committed to a massacre.
“I was hungry.”
“They made themselves easy targets.”
“Something feels off.”
You scold them unabashedly. Slipping into old routines you can’t help but reprimand their impulse control. Whether it was within their nature or a side-effect of their capture their control over their actions didn’t always align with their higher-thinking capabilities. It was why your old boss negated your observations about their sentience. They still snapped at the fake bloodied hand thrust into their enclosure. They all relentlessly chased the live fish released to them. They all still went for the General’s neck when given the chance although the punishment for such an action may mean a missed meal.
But as you convinced them to reenter the moving tanks, their reactions really called into question just what was going on here. The resources this group had, the turn out of hundreds of people, and the transparency of knowing just where you lived. Azul was right. This was off. But what could you do? Never in a million years could you afford the resources necessary to transport three massive mystical creatures that desperately needed the conditions of the ocean to survive.
So you do something you would have usually advised against when they were in your care you drop a screwdriver into an awaiting tentacle. Its a wordless agreement for a plan B. As you help this rebel load them onto a truck that arrives a little while later.
Again an 18 wheeler casually coming up to this offroaded area to accept the containers and take it further out deceptively in the direction of a nearby ocean.
“So question,” you decide to probe this ‘rebel’ a bit more.”Why are you willing to do this after so many of your friends have died?”
“Well it’s right thing to do they’re far from home right?”
That wasn’t a strong enough reason and the pit in your stomach grows as the truck stops at a private bay. Still they begin unloading the tanks, having them lined up to release but there’s a moment when the trucker, the injured rebel, and a few others who joined from the road.
“What are you waiting for? Why don’t you just open it please.”
They all become really quiet.
Then another car pulls up and the person that steps out is definitely not an activist.
You don’t recognize the slick back hairstyle with a suit but you did recognize the pin on their suit.
Its the logo of the rival company of your previous employer.
“Evening care to go for a ride with me?”
The tone of the crew shifts and suddenly there are a lot more people who are visibly armed. You’re ushered onto a small boat as the containers are finally prepped to be opened.
“Why do I need to be on the boat for their release I’d be happy to let you all take it from here.”
The idea was to get them to let you go of course to run to your old employers with some harrowing info. But it seems like the man in the tailored suit wasn’t going to allow that as he pointed a gun into your side.
“Now now don’t you want to see the finale of all your hard work?” The mocking tone of his voice makes you almost as unsettled as the gun pointed at you. Forced to be led beside him you can’t do much of anything as he takes your phone and crushes it.
“Hey you wake them up,” he beckons a passing agent, who pulls off the tarps on their tanks and bangs their gun against the glass. Earning a hiss from the eels, their attention is immediately brought to you and the man holding you to his side.
“If you don’t mind we figured we would escort you home.”
Tanks shifted into the water they abruptly opened, allowing them to rush into the ocean along with the water. Logically they should have left at this point in time yet when the water leaves the tank you see two heads with multi-colored gaze half-way emerge.
“Great so glad you’ve decided to comply,” he hauls you into the deck below flanked by two armed agents of his that descend into the lower deck with you. As you’re brought lower you can hear some of what this guy has to say,”wonderful, I knew you all are intelligent enough to reason. Not to mention your soft spot for a cerain someone—”
You miss the rest, as the door to the upper deck shuts. Forced to watch the gps and digital map marked with different incidents that suggest the existence of merman.
When the yacht lurches into movement you can hear the walkie talkie on one of the technicians fizzle to life. “They’re taking us to the heart let’s go.”
Forced to silently sit, you can only hope that they’re defying the best they can. Considering you’ve searched your memory for just who was leading this operation. Even at your old job there were whispers of your competitor’s ruthlessness. Commissioned by other governments and underground crime lords they had something rumored as a White Wolf. A hitman that’s willing to clean up anything for their employers unbothered for taking the fall they were someone known to never cross paths with. Especially if you planned on surviving.
“Come on bait we’re at the nest.” Those words awaken you as your shaken from sleep. Still groggy you let him link arms with you again and lead you up the stairs. Looking around, you found that the entrance to this ‘nest’ was a random spot in the ocean nothing for the naked eye. If there was something you’d be none the wiser. Leaning over the edge as much as the Wolf would allow you looked for them. For any sign of them. Finding nothing.
“Where are they?”
The Wolf turns to you as if remembering that you weren’t actually a piece of bait. As if remembering it in real time he looks you up and down with a grody once over,”Went under apparently. Says that it’s here.”
You look to the deep dark depths again, finding nothing out of the ordinary to suggest otherwise,”So what does that mean for me?”
He holds you tighter, trapping you into the railing ahead, letting his other hand brush at the nape of your neck. Naturally you shiver eliciting a delighted giggle from the man, “Well I was going to shoot you and leave you with them but I think we can find a place for you at Future Co. Especially if you’re willing to work magic with the next batch of fishboys.”
The nonchalance at which he speaks makes your hands tremble. He doesn’t bother hiding his demented chuckling as he clasps his hands with your own. “So skittish, you musta remembered who I am eh?”
You don’t bother nodding, instead finding it very interesting to look at the unrippling water. Suddenly you feel the heat and minty freshness of his breath on your ear, “Then I hope this little bunny’s not going to try swimming, right?”
You nod and he laughs again.
There’s a wetness on your cheek dripping onto your coat.
Wiping it away it didn’t occur to you that you started to cry.
Hostage situations were really so much more stressful than anything you were dealing with.
“We’re here.”
The voice stops anything else the White Wolf might’ve said. Instead incurring a much wider smile from the man as he inspects the head he’s interacting with, “Where’s your buddy? The one that looks like you?”
You could hear the bored shrug before you looked. “He went home. Duh.”
The ‘matter of fact’ tone makes the man beside you frown. It makes you smile, you know that was Floyd.
“I see.” He tentatively looks to the water.”So it’s right below here? The whole nest?”
“Yup!”
“Wonderful.”
Without a moments notice the White Wolf reaches for the device on his hip before pressing a button. Suddenly the revving of multiple boats is heard from the horizon highly armed speeding boats arrive unceremoniously divers already dressed and armed with harpoons jumping into the water and sinking below. The White Wolf waves and turns tucking you along, aiming to go to the lower deck until Floyd speaks up,”Hey you made a deal with us.”
The White Wolf stops.
“I did….didn’t I?”
The question rings with so much attitude that you start to tremble again. Maneuvered back onto the deck of the ship you await to learn just what this deal was.
“Said I’d toss you your doctor didn’t I?”
Floyd doesn’t respond which isn’t a good sign. Even in the past times you spoke whenever you didn’t hear Floyd something was happening and usually it wasn’t good.
“Well here they are!”
You are in the air before you know it. Launched over the railing and slapping unceremoniously into the water. Naturally you start to tread half expecting Floyd to wrap around you, like in the past. When you were first establishing contact you kept reprimanding him for doing that exact thing.
“Awww why can’t I carry the little shrimp you’re just so tiny!”
You forget what you said. Something about the integrity of the experiment. In truth it just made you realize how small you were in comparison to them and it felt so belittling. But now you couldn’t hope for anything less than that.
But he wasn’t grabbing you and instead you weren’t treading you were flailing.
The shock of the depth impacting your swimming.
Not to mention your missing mer-friend.
With a tight grip on the back of your coat you felt yourself being pulled up out of the water. As you slip to the floor over the railing you quickly rise to see where Floyd was only to realize the disturbing reason why he didn’t come.
He writhing. Giant tail flinging about above and below the surface as he tightly held his hands over his ears. He was screaming before sending a scathing glare at you.
No not at you.
Behind you.
At the White Wolf holding a gun of a similar design as the General’s.
“Yeah now I upheld my part. Best get running fishboy the calvaries here!”
The ships all seem to beep with an activating hum, guns raisning and being directed towards the water. Recognizing the design you shout,”Floyd go, they’re going to do it to everyone!”
He does exactly that dipping below the surface.
The White Wolf laughs as he hooks the gun over his shoulders,”Wow got that one on a leash don’t ya doctor?”
You don’t respond already standing with your hands raised as you head below the deck, the routine well established and the other gun in his hand making the message loud and clear. Just because an unspeakable act was committed you couldn’t react, not yet.
So you sat obediently while the White Wolf received information. Casually communicating about how many they’d gather today and how many they tagged. Apparently they some how had access to all the information you collected during your time at the company. I more compelling question for how they got so much of your direct notes on their care. Your interest peaked as you casually peered over a technician’s shoulder,”are thosemy doodles?”
It was almost enough to bring a laugh as you watched these people hyper-analyze your chicken-scratch notes like they were ancient hieroglyphics. The technician looked at you like you’d spoiled a complicated movie. Before looking to the Wolf who did not look amused.
But what was it if not something to laugh at that they were having so much trouble. Relaxed you rose from your spot and took the binder evaluating your own vital notes to the ones they had made.
“Anything to say about that doctor?”
The Wolf’s words could’ve been interpreted as a challenge of authority but instead you took it as an invitation. Flipping through the binder you go back to the page that has your doodles,”These aren’t anything to write home about, genuinely my own interpretation of some possibly other types of merpeople but Hank in biology doesn’t think so.”
Did it feel wrong to kiss-up so quickly sure but experience with your past employers wasn’t much different. The only difference really being that they had guns on their belts. Until your patients can hopefully get away you vould at the very least ensure you’d be around for what ever came next.
The Wolf snickered to himself,”See they’re going to be a great with us.”
BAM into the side of the boat knocking you and everyone inside to the ground. When you open your eyes again there’s water inside the cabin, a few inches sloshing through your coat and face. Looking around you find that none of the technicians you were with were in the room except for one who’s cold to the touch.
You stand rubbing at the small throbbing lump on your forehead before succumbing to the listing of the boat; leaning into it’s side to the door to the deck. The sun is setting by now and with the waning visibility you spy what’s attacking the boat. Giant black and purple tentacles that are taking on and scooping and squeezing the agents one by one.
The screams filling the air are continuous the crunching of bones and falling bodies from impossibly high slapping fatalling into the water below. Its a massacre on teetering boats, two tentacles dedicated to the sinking of the abandoned vehicles.
“KEEP FIRING DON’T LET UP!”
It’s the White Wolf. No longer on the original yacht but on a blow up speed boat with brightlights he leads the charge on agents in similar rides. Still holding the sound guns no longer has slicked hair and has abandoned his suit for the shirt beneath it. Clutching your ears the sound of bullets firing along with the sound weapon it’s all so overwhelming. Overwhelming enough to fall to the railing as the boat lurches again. Hands wet and slipping you find yourself fighting gravity as the boat tilts into the water. Rain or water dripping from the tentacles you can’t tell falling on your face and blinding your vision.
Blinking the water out of your eyes to the best of your abilities you try your best to climb higher. Though you’re met with a terrible realization as your arms fail you, your hands slipping from their initial grip.
“Ack!”
You feel something pinch in your shoulder. Something loosens and you can’t push past the pain fast enough to grab the railing; tumbling to the sinking side of the ship you were on. You don’t bother hiding your screams certain that you would not be heard by the battling parties. Splashing into the water you do your best to swim despite your arm. Sparing a glance at the White Wolf and the majority of the tentacles your only goal is to get away, searching among the sinking wreckage for something to help you float.
“I got them!”
Like an attack personalized for you, you are grabbed by the arm you’re certain has dislocated. Casually hoisted into the belly of one of the speed boats, you don’t get a chance to look up until the nozzle of a gun is on your cheek. Forcefully pushing into your teeth you hardly lift your head to look at the tentacles slowing their attacks. Raising as if on command a gigantic vibration shakes all the boats. A terrible hum emanating from the sea and making everyone pause.
“Sir look!”
An agent point to an illuminated spot, the water bubbling with waves that foretell something large coming to the surface. The nozzle on your cheek lessens as the one holding it strays from you staring at what’s come to the surface.
It’s Azul.
10 times greater than the already large octopus merman. Alight with silver eyes and everything you don’t think you’ve ever seen him smile so big as he rises out the water with a vicious cackle.
“AWWW I HAVE MY HANDS UP, DON’T DO ANYTHING BAD!”
The sadistic smile he makes while casually raising his humongous hands, the mocking in his tone oozing with a terrible confidence. Being addressed by the titan-like merman the agent above you recenters his aim back into your head.
“D-don’t do anything or I’ll shoot—”
Before he can finish annunciating his threat, the violent tearing of the boat below you, has him falling through. Not alone and pulled under by the familiarly darkened eel wrapping around his body, you are left trying to piece together just who you saw. But with half the boat missing the rest quickly deflating you find yourself slipping to the darkened murkiness of the waters.
Still in pain you tread, the same mission as before booming in your head something compels you to look back at the White Wolf. In a different position and a gun aimed he’s not pointing it at the enlarged Azul, he’s pointing at you. Planning to silently off you before the massive monster notices.
PTOO!
It’s funny now that you think about it. That a bullet travels so quickly with such force that it’ll make it’s mark. Funny that water lessens the blow and still you feel the warmth leaving your body like nothing you ever experienced.
Less focused on fighting you hold just below your chest, where the bullet must be. Deliriously choosing to stop the most worrisome for a dying scientist. You can’t hear like you used to and your eyelids have never felt heavier. Azul’s face perfectly comes into your vision, sad and full of tears you wish you could comfort him.
With a passing thought, you promise to comfort him after your nap.
A long healthy nap.
When you awoke the first thing you gather is the ache below your chest. Your hands naturally running your hand over the throbbing space to find bandages. Gauze wrapped around your torso it’s tightly wound, almost suffocating if it weren’t for what must’ve been pulled out of you.
Pulled out…?
Pulled out.
Pulled—-Oh my stars, you were shot.
Sitting up with great unease you find yourself on a soft mattress, scooching to the head rest you finally take a look around. Taking in what looks like some tropical paradise with walls made of bamboo and a roof made of wood and palms.
“Yah~the shrimps awake!”
Heavy and warm you are squashed into the bed under the weight of the man with a familiar black streak on his right side. Squeezed in a hug much too tight for someone in pain you squeak out,”Help…me Azz. Please!”
The palms of the door way rustle with the entrance of pale guy wearing a fitting pair of glasses. The same beauty mark and violet curls with an anxious look on his face.
“Floyd do not open those stitches I swear to Ursula.”
The giant on top of you sighs before twisting himself around you, replacing the bed beneath you as he holds you like a pouty kid with a stuffed bear. His squeezing lessens but you feel a sly finger poke into your banaged side.
An unadulterated giggle as you let out a shocked hiss.
The man who threatens him with a look before calling out through the hanging palms he entered through. Moving into make space for the identical giant with sharp teeth, the only difference being that closed smile and the black streak hanging from the right.
“Wait,” the broken pieces of your memory were coming together as you really examined the faces of the men around you.
“You’re Jade…”
“Glad to see you remember that at least.”
“And you’ve got to be Azul…?”
“I shouldn’t be too offended I looked very different the last time you saw me.”
“Then you’ve got to be Floyd–Ack!”
“Is that even a question!”
Taking a lookat their lower halves you can’t ignore the bigger issue at play here. Other than their changed appearances.
“Wait you guys all have legs…how did that happen?”
Without an ounce of concern a look is shared between them as if you’d cracked the most hilarious joke. Instead of tails there are legs dressed in capri shorts that match the walls.
Jade stalks to a rudimentary looking oven where a pot of water boiled,”There were things even you don’t know about us doctor.”
He was making tea which seemed to fit, the quieter twin.Speaking of the man behind you nuzzles into your head, loudly sniffing at your head. Physically too weak to pull away you have no choice but to carefully accept a thermos of tea. When it was cool enough you addressed them again, considering the other two were simply staring at you like they were waiting for something specific.
You figured you’d lighten the mood, although you weren’t quite figuring out what’s happened. “Not to complain but this is a very tropical scene for some piping hot tea, is this what you guys usually prefer?”
Jade’s smile never lessened as you took another sip,”No but it’s best for you. Your body needs heat in order to fight off infection.”
You knew that. Heck knowing the ins and outs of the human body were a given for your profession. What was most interesting was that they seemed to be enjoying this reversal of roles.
“Okay but what happened? How did I get here? I get the feeling something insane has happened and no one’s talking about it.”
Azul steps forward with a push of his glass,”I’ll take that one. Obviously those activists weren’t all they were appearing to be,”the memory and a smidge of guilt for being so easily fooled and putting them in danger. Their reactions to the sound weapons burned into your memory as the tragedies of this whole ordeal.
“So we took the liberty of cleaning everything up.”
The squint in your brows was instant, “Cleaning up? What did you have to clean up?”
Azul dramatically sighs, a hand curling out with a faux grace. “Who else do you think could take down THE White Wolf?”
The name makes your eyes widen,”How do you–?”
Jade and Floyd laugh simultaneously. The vibrations against your back prove how hilarious your curiosity seems to be.
“Ah you’re very cute, when you’re being stupid.”
That felt great. Not expecting much else from Floyd as he goes for another deep sniff you turn to Jade.
“Apologies, your cluelessness is endearing. You were not the only one listening to rumors back in that place.”
That place. The disdain weaved so casually into conversation, by the always-composed Jade, just hammers the truth deeply into your heart. That you were glad they were finally free but to have them standing before you—toes in the sand—has the largest question to ask.
“Why didn’t you change before? Into this.” You gesture to their lower halves.
They all turn to look at you as if you held the answer all along. But as they momentarily stop to stare and smile eerily.
Azul speaks with a soft look, affection clear as day, “We were looking for something.that could only be found in our true forms.”
You open your mouth to ask: did you find it? But before you speak in unison they reply to you.
“We did.”
Ignoring their synchronicity you don’t attempt to dwell on it. Having known them for as long as you have you have an inkling on the one thing they could be in absolute agreement with.
“Oh good!”
Floyd lowers his head onto your shoulder, “You were an especially big help with that.”
Laying it on thick, doesn’t make the little pit in your stomach shrink any less. Instead you figured it’d be best to let this play out.
“Glad I could be so helpful. So what now?”
The three of them snicker and you can only be grateful they’re so fond of you.
This has been the worst of my 99 problems this month.
I really really hoped you enjoyed this stupid little brainworm.

Reading your Papa Crewel series and you know what vibes he give me?
That rich parent in Korean drama that gives the love interest millions to get away from their kid
Crewel is that Rich Korean Parent in the Kdrama!!
The aristocratic lifestyle. The polished socialiting. The check with zeroes longer than an average salary; that equates to chump change when given by Divus Crewel.
He is that parent.
Whether he aided in your creation or not when you trust him with your life you are family. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. He’s your father and as your father it’s his duty to chase off unworthy vermin.
Now the criteria of ‘unworthy vermin’ is as follows:
Narcissistic
Temperamental
Moody
Violent
Occassionally Kind
Rude
Egotistical
Incredibly Attractive
Disloyal
Confrontational
Irritating
Has had past relationships
Revolting
Physically Unattractive
Possessive
Terrible Social Skills
Sub-Par Hygeine
Too Good Hygeine
Stands to Gain from a Union
Too Low Life Insurance Policy
Disrespectful
Poor
Negative
Lonely
The list really does go on because for Crewel no living creature is good enough to care for you. He will never take your partner lightly even if they save your life, save his life, and save his dogs’ lives. Just no one is truly capable of properly pampering and forever adoring his little pup except him.
Or the closet copy he can get.
No matter who you bring to the holiday bash, he’s going to test them. If they even survive that, he’s going to chop at their character and appearance until he’s satisfied. Usually until they come out as some off-brand version of himself or more preferably a puppet that he can control the strings of in the inevitable relationship with you.
Should you be find a potential partner that can survive the tests, turn down the money, and even refuse his meddling. Then you’ve got yourself a real gem. Likely someone who can be on par with Crewel to some degree.
While he’d never agree to hand you over just to someone more powerful than him, but he knows the look. The heartfelt unstoppable obsession for you that swirls in their eyes and he knows that doesn’t really ever go away. As long as your stamp of approval is given and he gets his tests, he ultimately prioritizes your happiness.
Even as a Yandere he knows better than to chain up a lovable rambunctious pup meant to change the world. So instead he’ll sponsor your endeavors, attend those milestones because above it all is you. His precious pup, who is raising (no matter how old you are) to be the royal he knows you to be.
In a world filled with humans and hybrids attempting to find balance with one another, you are but a simple human trying to integrate into the town on the property your late grandparent bequeathed to you. The town just so happens to have a small population of farming hybrids, with hardly any other humans around.
“So you’re the inheritor…(Y/n)? (L/n)?”
“Yes, I have my I.D. if you want to check.”
“..Right….but the owner of the original property was a hybrid…you are not.”
“Not that it matters. But my grandfather’s partner was a Wolf hybrid…They both agreed to give it to me when they both passed.”
“I..see.”
It might be right to call it racism or maybe more accurately it’s specism and the townsfolk aren’t all that keen on hiding it. They openly sneer at you when you do come to town, whispering loudly about what they’ve heard, and rolling their eyes if you have the gall to ask them a question.
“Can I get these bags of mulch in bulk?”
“...so what are ya talkin’ to me for? Just grab ‘em.”
“Your sign says to ‘ask for more at the front desk.’”
“...Fine dirt monkey. How much?”
It doesn’t bother you…sometimes. You mostly spend your days on your property, having picnics in the open fields you now own. Spending time renovating your cottage with all the custom plumbing and electricity you learn to install yourself. Wouldn’t want some unfriendly technician in town doing it instead. Anyways you get into the routine of sustaining yourself in your lonesome working from home and relying on your savings to help you enjoy your new life. That doesn’t stop until the one fateful day…you’re lounging on your deck when you hear something faint. It sounds like crying.
“Waaaaa!”
It sounds like a child…which isn’t unfamiliar, after all your neighbors do seem to be a little family. Of course, they don’t want to talk to you but that’s fine.
“Waaaa!”
It sounds pretty intense but you’re sure it’ll stop soon.
“Waaaaa! Somebody help, please!”
Now it feels wrong to ignore it any longer. You quickly fix yourself to head over, driving the tractor that you ride across your property to the fence that represents the beginning of your neighbor’s property. It was short work to hop over the fence and hear the crying persisting. Running to the back porch of the house, you see a little dog boy crying his heart out.
“I heard you crying what’s wrong?”
The kid starts blubbering wiping at tears and snot on his face. After some calming pats between the ears and some promises to help you can get a clear picture.
“Mama fell ‘ver and she won’t wake up!”
You run inside to find exactly that. A dog woman face down on the floor while the soup on the stove boils out and whatever’s in the oven beginning to smoke. Stopping the appliances you flip over the woman in search of a heartbeat and breathing. Thankfully you find it and ask the little boy where you can lay her down. He points you to the bedroom down the hall passing by another bedroom and a bathroom.
Once you’ve laid her down, check her temperature, and decide in your not-so-expert opinion that she’s suffering from a fever. Assuring the little dog boy you have him help you carry some cold water and a rag to place on her head. While making sure she drinks some water, you finally get to talking to the little dog boy who’s started to calm down now.
“That was real brave of you, good job for asking for help.”
“Big brother always said I gotta since I’m too tiny to do much myself.”
“Well, I thought you were very helpful and you don’t seem that tiny to me.”
“Thanks!”
“No problem! My name’s (Y/n).”
“And my name’s Titan! By the way (Y/n) I’m real hungry!”
That’s how you ended up cleaning the dishes, Titan’s mother started and using what you could to make something new. You stuck with one of your old family recipes, relying on your memory the best you could to avoid another charred disaster. Eventually, you finish up able to set a plate in front of Titan who is more than happy to dig in.
“More! More!”
“Okay Titan just a little bit more but you can’t eat it all we’ve got to save some.”
“Whyyyy!?”
“Because your mom hasn’t eaten yet and I’m sure your brother will want some when he gets home–”
“But he’s never aroun’ we’ll be waiting forever for him to come!”
Creak.
“Titan who is this?”
The new voice comes from a much larger dog man with a sturdy build, sun-kissed skin, and overalls barely hanging off his shoulders. His ears are narrowed back and his shoulders are hunched as he easily towers over you. With Titan’s help, you explain how you came to help and that his mother had fainted, likely from the fever she had. When you show him to her, his bared teeth and impending growl quiet down. Fussing over her as he checks for any sign that you might be lying. Finding that you’re not, he skeptically accepts the meal you made as you alternate watching over her and entertaining Titan–who’s far too chipper for a pup ready for bed.
“Hey uh, wanted to apolog’ze for earlier”
“For what?!”
“Fer how I acted when you’re just helpin’ out.”
“Oh, it’s okay! I’m just happy no one’s hurt.”
“I’m also sorry for misjudging you. I think I had the wrong impression bout ya.”
As you continue to chat with the young dog man–Tank you both work together to finish up whatever chores his mom would usually do. Between you both Titan is convinced to finally get some sleep if it’s in your lap close to his mom. Tank suggests you stay over bashfully offering his bed if you need it. You decline, encouraging him to get some much-needed rest considering he was working on the farm tomorrow.
“A-a-are you sure you don’t want to stay in a bed? I feel like it’s the least we could do.”
“No worries Tank, I’m going to watch over your mom until this fever breaks. Besides I don’t have the heart to move Titan now.”
“Fair I guess. Hopefully, I’ll see ya tomorrow?”
“Yeah if I’m not still here in the morning you can come to my place anytime.”
His fluffy tail wags a lot harder than he likes at that.
“R-really?”
“Yeah, anytime!”
With another ‘thank you’ he’s off to bed. It isn’t until sunrise that the fever breaks and the dog-hybrid mother is coming to. Assuring her that her boys and the food she left in the oven are not burning the house she calms down to thank you.
“Oh thank you thank you I don’t know what I would have done without you!”
Where you’ll have to fight her off from her barrage of kisses, hugs, and propositions to stay long enough for her to cook something for you to take home, as much as you wanted to stay and indulge in her acts of thanks, you missed your bed and it was plenty exhausting now that you were being spoken to positively. Convincing her that you were such a short drive away that she didn’t need to keep you too much longer and after promising that she and her boys were welcome anytime you could finally go home.
“You promise?”
“Yes, Miss Tiffany I promise, anytime you’d like.”
“Just not now?”
“Yes, not now so please get some rest!”
Back in the comfort of your home, everything is more or less the same except for the recently obsessed friendly neighbors who make all the quiet time you used to have nonexistent.
“Wake Up! Wake Up! Let’s play!”
“Egh Titan how did you get in here?”
“Through your doggy door!”
“But I don’t have one!”
“Now you do!”
Thus begins the first few to fall for the lone human in this hybrid town. Hardly shy about their newly discovered attraction as they fill their dull hours up with time next to you. Lucky them as your neighbors they’re the only ones privy to your addictive affection and comforting scent.
“Oh! I was about to drive over to drop off Titan!”
“What a coincidence! We were just coming over to have dinner at yours!”
“Huh?”
“Well, you did say we can come and thank you anytime!”
“So we figured why not now!”
“In fact, maybe every week we come over to yours and you come over to ours!”
“I mean I guess-?”
“Wonderful Titan, Tank clear the kitchen I’m going to make this dinner the best yet!”
“Yes’m!” “Yes’m
The Dog hybrid family next door is all too eager to take up all of your time. Since the moment you moved in they’ve been eager to truly get to know you, woefully settling with the distant wafts of your scent during a favorable breeze. Unlike others in the town their curiosity for the human was a positive one blaming it on their all too friendly instincts they couldn’t deny the urge they got to close to the distance between you two. But alas everyone in the town was so averse to the idea they were pushed off the desire for far too long but after your sweet words and intentions, they’d be foolish not to return the affection.
“(Y/n) if you’d like me to cut the grass, I don’t mind.”
“That’s really sweet, Tank but I told myself I wouldn’t allow myself to sit back and let others do all the work.”
His tail droops at that. “Ah I see.”
“But you won’t tell me to go away will you (Y/n)? After I made that doggy door and everything.”
“You just chewed a hole in my door and I’m not saying you can’t stop by Tank I just don’t want it to be because you’re doing more work.”
His tail is wagging a mile a minute again. “I don’t mind if it’s for you!”
With your canine hybrid neighbors so close it’s hard to forget you were ever left alone. Now quiet and sometimes confrontational trips are filled with at least one member of the family accompanying you. Willing to bargain at stores for you or impressively growl when the cashier’s being a tad too snippy. It does make you nervous when the tiny Titan politely asks the nosy bird-woman who had the nerve to whisper about you to a ‘nice chat’ in the alley between the store. Returning with tufts of feathers and blood in his baby teeth. Or how Mama Tiff will oh so politely mention her bloodhound heritage at the fox bullies that hang around your car. Or when Tank all too eagerly pulls you into his side when he finds you cornered by the snake librarian.
“Back off my human!”
After any confrontation, you’ll ask your questions. Head on or round about they’ll all only smile at you, tail wagging wildly behind them. As if they’re proud of the slight fear in your eyes when you ask what that was about.
“We just want to protect you! You are only human after all!”
The call from your awkward and friendly acquaintance in the idol-managing business leaves you in an unreadable ball of confusion. Typically when Bobby did call you it was to brag about his girls or about the latest resort he was gifted by the girls. But this time he needed your help and you weren’t sure if you were going to give it.
“Please please (Y/n)! You taught me everything I know; if there’s anyone who can handle them it’s you.”
Bobby pleading on his knees doesn’t change your reluctance but the pleading gazes of the boy-band in question made you slow to voice it. It also was harder to refuse when you could see the shining blue shackles on each of their wrists. A marked hand slides onto your shoulder with a stealth you haven’t felt in a long time and instinctively you reach for the holster under your coat, locking eyes with the one you once deemed to be an enemy.
“It can only be you. Mx. (L/n).”
It’s the purple-haired idol who not only was rumored to have once endangered the Honmoon but mended it with strength that surpassed her ancestors. Here she was glowing with her shining demon marks in broad daylight. A part of you still found it wrong.
She took your blatant staring in stride; sending Bobby out of the room,”Mind giving us some space? I think it might land better y’know? Idol to idol?”
“Oh, sure thing Rumi! In fact, I’ll go get the celebratory ramyeun now!”
He dashed as if his life depended on it, leaving you and Rumi with the shackled demon idols. Looking warily at the hunter you slowly pulled your hand away from your holster. The fakely wide smile on her fades into something more concerning. Pressing her purple-painted lips together, it’s time to address the real elephant in the room.
“Why are they still here?! I thought you killed them all when you made the Honmoon golden.”
She nervously smiles, “I–thought I did too. But it seems that they were sealed in the upper world instead. The only one who….didn’t make it was thanks to Gwi-Ma.”
She steps away from you, putting her hand out as if to pet the “baby Saja boy.” Previously he looked as though he was dead; standing with a face that epitomized boredom. That all changed when Rumi came close. His eyes glowed that sinister yellow and his fangs were bared as he chomped at the air her hand used to be. The blue chains clink with golden chains that shine in a ripple like the Honmoon itself.
“You must mean the leader. Jinu.”
You were playing with fire. For all the shipping edits that the idol leaders were put through, anyone could’ve guessed that they were close. While you don’t have eyes and ears close to her domain, it still got back to you just how close she’d gotten with him. During Huntrix's report of the event, Jinu’s returned soul was what gave the trio the power to completely exorcise Gwi-Ma. A feat that was impossible even for the first hunters to exist.
“Yes…Jinu,” she spoke his name with a heavy resonance. A respect that hadn’t dulled at all because it still felt raw.
”He saved me by showing me how to accept this part of myself rather than hide.”
She held her hands in front of her playing with the light against her marks, “Still he’s showing me there’s more to this side of myself I never really understood before.”
You watched her close her hands into fists and turn to you with a fierceness in those brown eyes you’ve never seen in person,” Which is why I think we should try helping them before we kill them.”
Stopping your laughter you finally spoke, “We?”
“We. Huntrix can’t do this on our own. You’ve been handling the otherside of the hemisphere well and now that both sides are sealed all that’s left is to care for the demons that slipped through.”
“Then why not just kill them?” The one with abs tries to jab at her which she skillfully dodges,” They clearly aren’t fond of you.”
Pausing she looks at them and then at you.
“I have to try…if Jinu saw something worth using maybe…maybe there's more to them that I haven’t seen yet. That no one’s seen. I’m hoping you can do that.”
“I’m retired. I don’t think I can do much of anything now.”
Rumi gives you a look. That glare of determination that makes you feel exposed.
“I’ve heard you before. You can do this.”
You turn, prepared to refuse but she grabs your hands.
“Please (Y/n).To protect our reign of peace….please.”
“Alright, Saja boys. Listen up you live and breathe to be the idol group I demand you be, you hear me?!”
The collective groans of the demon boy band, the sound makes you smirk. In an instant, you begin to hum an old song you used to sing unsheathing your whip from its holster. Romance is the one who perks up, the only one who seems to catch on that you are about to obliterate them.
“AcK!”
“OW that burns!”
“Please don’t!”
“Okay okay, we’re all listening p-please contine.”
It’s over in seconds. Everything but their faces is covered in disgusting blue welts.
“As I was saying. I expect my perfect idol boy band to be smiley, friendly, and to say 'yes (Y/n)' whenever I ask you questions. Is that clear?”
“Yes (Y/n)!”
“That’s good now have a good show just like we practiced!”
It’s been interesting taking on the Saja boys. Their image that had Jinu be their cool and calm collected leader was very much the truth. Without you breathing down their necks you found they were quite awful to all around them.
“Abby did you or did you not hit that PA with a button of yours, on purpose?”
“I mean they were looking too hard anyway it’s not my fault.”
“It is your fault that they went to the hospital thanks to your stupid little stunt.”
“It’s whatever they got a souvenir they’ll never forget!”
CRACK!
“Not the whip please, I’ll make a public apology! Sorry!”
You’ve dealt with idols that had a kamidere complex or outright narcissism but you haven’t dealt with literal demons who barely grasped that humanity was anything more than a population of overgrown bugs.
“Alright, Bae Bee what’s going to be the right response if someone asks how you feel about the subject of turtles?”
“Goo Goo Gaga?”
“No. Try using real words please.”
“It’s…whatever?”
“I did that whole slide show and you didn’t gather anything from that?!”
“....”
FWHIP!
“Their…mid?!”
CRACK!
“Wahhh!”
But you wouldn’t continue with this farce if you didn’t realize there was a learning curve to be had. The first time it dawned on you was when Romance came to you in the dead of night, clutching the book you’d gifted them your second day: How to be a Human for Dummies. You were lounging on the large couch watching your shows when he walked in. He stood awkwardly by the door like a child who’d come to woefully inform his parents he’d wet the bed. You pretended not to know he was there; gauging if he’d actually ask for help like you offered.
“Why should we try?”
You muted the TV. Giving the pink-haired demon your full attention, you turned as he stood at the opposite end of the couch.
“Because you’ll die if you don’t.”
His nails dug into the paper cover,” no I mean why do we have to…I’ve already tried doing that before. I don’t want to go through that again.”
His marks flashed and you couldn’t see his face clearly; his hair making a curtain you so desperately wanted to peek past.
Sighing you stood, “Follow me.”
Doing as he was told he followed you over rooftops, skillfully swinging through the concrete jungle to end it bumping into your back. He opened his mouth to insult you, to whine about how you couldn’t just answer the question to following your gaze. Down below in a window that flashed with all matter of colors, was a girl surrounded by friends singing terribly into the microphone as they cheered her on.
“You see her” The girl with the red bow in her hair?”
“...yeah.”
“She used to wonder that too. She used to walk home every day from school to her room. Locking herself away because she once listened to the same voices you do. Frankly, if she had continued listening she would have ended up just like you.”
“Then why isn’t she…like me that is?”
“Because she kept trying. Worked hard to find those she could care about; though it was hard she found them. Only because she tried.”
“So what?! I try and everything will be fixed?”
“I didn’t say that but no matter what you’ve done. Trying to make amends. Trying to be better is what makes it, you, worth it in the end.”
“Even if it took 300 years?”
“Even if it took 300 years.”
They certainly had their moments and that was enough to not exorcise them when their third month existing in the idol world rolled around. Much to your displeasure, you had no choice but to inform Rumi you’d continue to manage the Saja boys. If only to help them reconcile with themselves. To instead use their talent and influence to strengthen the Honmoon and continue to keep the positive energy that the fans permeated alive and well.
If you worked hard, you could save the remaining Saja boys.
Mystery was the first to voice this opinion. Finally left alone and unsupervised the Saja Boys were able to speak without the threat of being whipped, stabbed, or otherwise ground into a pulp on the shining golden Honmoon. Backstage just before another performance.
“Yeah, this just such a bummer. It was more fun when we worked for Gwi Ma!” Abs spoke leaning against the walls of the hidden stage.
“Was it actually fun or were we just happy not to be reminded of who we are?”
Romance turned still maintaining the front position of the band just as they’d been instructed, looking into the golden eyes of his fellow demons. Looking for the same confusion he’d been saddled with since they started this.
“I don’t really care, I just don’t like feeling…like this.”
“Like what, Myst?! What exactly do you feel?”
Abandoning his position, he closed in. Holding the quiet demon by the neck and slamming him into the wall. The infrastructure of the stage shook and dented but Romance was careful. He wasn’t certain why he cared so much to know his answer. He’d been asking the same thing of himself for all this time.
Mystery pursed his quivering lips. Romance growled and threw the demon to the ground, rolling into Abs’ feet. The muscular demon deflated when Romance turned to him expecting an answer, his eyes darting around as if the moving walls would have it scrawled somewhere.
The lack of response only made the pink-haired demon angrier. Fangs beared and marks on full display he charged narrowly scratching at Abs’ face. Mystery got up to intervene, fully prepared to bite the neck of the completely wild Romance. Until his voice broke the silence.
“Purposeless. That is what we are feeling.”
His real voice was much deeper than his human one which is why when the late Jinu led the group he was specially instructed to keep it hidden. But they had no leader. They have no Gwi-Ma. All they have in this hidden stage is each other.
Romance retracts his claws, the marks still glowing bright, and he pulls at his locks.
“He’s right. W-we have nothing anymore! All we have is ourselves and that’s worse than nothing. W-w-we can’t even go back!”
His shaky declaration makes everyone unsettled. Placing a name to their fear—to their reality made it far too true. Their marks all begin to glow with an anxious throbbing. Mystery retreats into himself huddling into the corner. Abs freezes, willing his body to move and failing miserably. Even Baby lets the cap he’s wearing cover his face as he slowly slides to the floor.
“What’s the use of trying to change if I don’t even know why I’m here?! You’ve seen these humans!? They don’t know so what am I supposed to do?!”
The Honmoon throbs at his cry.
“How can I try when I don’t want to face who I am?!”
Demon marks flaring in tandem with the flickering gold.
“What good can come from someone as far gone as I?!”
The Honmoon dangerously touches the color pink.
“What am I supposed to do with myself!? Without any voice what am I supposed to do!?”
Multiple tears of the barrier are forming and joining at the seams around each of the separate Saja boys. Each one is influenced by their pain and about to damage the sanctity of the Honmoon.
~kzzt~
Like a heaven-sent. The comms in their ears buzzed to life.
~kzz~He~kzztz~
The pink fades and the healing blue returns to the barrier.
~kz~Hey can you guys hear me in this thing? It’s me (Y/n).kzztz~
It’s your voice. Their guardian. Their manager.
“As expected these walkies are crap. Anyway, I expect you boys to give me your best because I know you can do it. Can you do that for me Saja?”
The voice in their ears answered the only remaining questions.
“That’s what I like to hear. Now wow that crowd and no soul stealing.”
The silence of the stage was lighter. More defined. The long turned-off comms burned into their ears. All of them replaying the echo of their manager’s voice—soothing, uplifting, commanding.
“It is them. That will be our purpose.”
Baby’s voice spoken with clarity confirmed what they all decided. As the stage begins to rise and the cheers of their fans increase even more. The Saja Boys are in position, prepared to perform just as their manager demands it.
All of Huntrix was over for the day, enjoying some bubble tea as they looked at the golden-covered city. The barrier glowed strong with a healthy pulse fully powered by their fans.
You were glad that you’d convinced the boys to attend their shoot solo. Otherwise, you would’ve risked having this conversation with them around. Which wouldn’t have been a good idea considering how close they’ve gotten.
“It’s going great. They haven’t had another incident since I last called.”
The girls shared a look.
Mira sneered at the promotional material for the group scattered on the table, picking it up like it was dirty laundry.
“By great do you mean, like the Honmoons not broken great or that there's an uptick in murders in the last month—all where you guys were going on tour–great?”
Zoey chuckled anxiously, “We don’t want to accuse but the numbers don’t look great.”
Shooting a look at Rumi, you settled in your chair. Looking out at the city below carefully putting pressure on the plastic cup in your hands.
“Look I wish I could definitively say it’s just a coincidence but I looked into those cases myself and most of them seem airtight. But I’m not entirely sure there wasn’t some demonic influence.” Zoey and Mira shared a look before turning back to you with a grimace.
“I’m saying there’s just no way to tell for sure if it was them and without evidence I can't exactly ‘convict’ anyone.”
“So you're saying there’s no way not one of those boys slipped through your grasp?”
“Yeah (Y/n)...we know you’re technically retired and there’s five demons and one of you…it can’t be easy.”
Rumi finally looked ready to speak and you had a feeling you weren’t going to like it.
“We were thinking maybe you should take a break!” She didn’t look entirely convinced, looking between Mira and Zoey. “We’re going on a break for a little while so maybe we can look after them for you.”
“I’d love that,” you studied their faces for some kind of joke,” but I don’t know if you can handle the boys any more than I could.”
The girls confidently laughed.
“Are you kidding?”
“We nearly killed them the last time we met!”
“Yes, Huntrix has got this in the bag!”
The girls cheered with pride as they whooped and hollered at one another. You admired their spunk, something you felt came far too less now that you’ve outgrown the group you used to hunt with.
“Alright then girls, I’ll take you up on your offer–”
“Yes!” “The-Best-B-ab-y Sitters in the wooorldd!” “Yeah, this is going to be a piece of cake!”
“---a word of caution girls.”
Your words had them stopping in their tracks, their triumphant smiles only softening to acknowledge you. The only one it completely faded from was Rumi, who almost looked afraid to see you step on the elevator.
“The Saja Boys are a lot more determined than you’d think. Try not to be an obstacle for them.”
With that, the metal doors slid closed, and for once in a long time you were alone. Now came the hard part—telling them.
It was Bae Bee taking his usual spot at your back, his fanged sneer hissing into the side of your head he was previously nuzzling against. His nails had gotten longer penetrating the T-shirt you were wearing, a single flick to his wrist had him retract his claws but not loosen his grip.
Speaking of claws you could feel the demon on your lap allowing his to emerge and grip at your jeans all the tighter. The practiced action of oncoming tears soaking through the denim told you, Mystery was having a similar reaction. Across the room were Romance and Abby both dressed in their custom robes were drying with their respective blow dryers after using the dressing room’s shower. Both appliances were crushed and melted onto the floor within seconds of your announcement. The demons-responsible, flashing their marks and fangs at you. Romance immediately straightens up, adjusting his hair and robe before glaring down at you.
“I thought we had a deal.”
“YEAH A PROMISE! WE’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO BREAK THOSE.”
Abby was worse for wear marks and teeth on full display; you mentally noted to pay the venue for the damage he’d cause. Already a partition was torn through, a wall successfully punched into, and a microwave was effectively torn apart. If you didn’t ease his worries the staff would be next.
“I’m not leaving you guys. The deal was that if you all made an effort to change, I’d never leave.”
“Which is what you’re trying to do,” Mystery muffled protests had everyone nodding.
Romance stepped forward again, arms crossed and amber eyes glowing deviously down at you.
“Then that would mean our deal is off!”
“No, it’s not! We never said anything about time off or leaving and coming back.”
“Didn’t have to,” Bae whispers into your ear with a smirk on his face, ” You are the one who agreed.”
It’s then you feel the need to reach for your whip, reaching for your beloved weapon underneath your coat. Searching for your saving grace next to your waist you only to find its empty holster. Looking over to Abby who’s suddenly stopped his violent tirade to pull at the much sought after weapon.
“Then if you go that means we don’t have to abide by the rules anymore.” He looks at you like a puppy, one who’s done something awful and hopes you understand. The boisterous Abby was no longer there, a serious look on his face.
You want to soothe him. To deny it. But the truth of the matter was just that, you had to leave and at this point,t it wouldn’t do you any good to demand they accept otherwise. Your whip across the room, your body held in place by a smirking demon, your legs held down by another, and your attention on the one you were sure had made the most progress.
“We have changed if it helps. We’ve upheld our end of the deal. For you to go against us now…well we’ll just try to preserve our purpose.”
By now you were in no place to make demands.
“So go enjoy your…trip. We’ll be waiting and by then we’ll have changed some more just as you commanded.”
No trip to the Maldives would erase those words from your head.
When you return from any kind of holiday there’s a moment of great depression. A crushing sense of reality from the joy you experienced comes in full force as you unpack and reenter your tiresome schedule. In your case it was no different, for two whole weeks you could ignore the haunting reactions of the demons you guarded to lounge with a poolside cocktail in hand. Of course, your return would be tumultuous.
In the darkness of the condo you’d begun to call home, was Rumi. Sat crossed-legged in the mess of sliced furniture, just as worse for wear as the decor around her. You called to her, almost unsure it was she until she looked up. Her eyes were swollen, her marks an ugly black and the typically brown and golden eyes were red.
“I…didn’t think anything would change,” she finally spoke carelessly musing as you tried to nurse her wounds, “that I would still be strong enough to beat them…I just wasn’t ready for them to…change like I did.”
You want to question her. To ask what she meant but the four pairs of golden eyes smiling back at you explained more than anything she could have said.
“A deal’s a deal.”
Out of the darkness limp bodies clattered to the floor. Battered and bruised it was Zoey and Mira. Unconscious and scarily still you watched Rumi struggle to carry them both, limping to the elevator. She spared you a single glance; eyes filled with too many apologies to ever speak.
“I…can’t be an obstacle to you anymore. Goodbye (Y/n).”
With the broken jingle of the elevator, you were left with your boys once again. Gripping the handle of your whip, you wait for them to reveal themselves to you…fully. Without a word, they emerge in their original forms circling around you with smiles on their marked and purple faces.
“So what are we doing now that I’ve returned?”
Their distorted chuckles don’t settle your unease.
“You said you changed do you plan to show me?”
“Of course, (Y/n).” Abby’s voice was the loudest and when you turned prepared to strike, your arm was held in place by the demon.
“Whatever you demand of us.”
You dropped the whip catching it with your opposite hand, rearing to strike again only for your other hand to be caught and pried open. Your whip forcefully fell into the hands of Bae who smiles cruelly as he snaps your beautiful weapon in half with a ripple of magenta smoke. Of course, you struggle but the hands holding you in place are firm, warping your struggles so that you fall to your knees. Your chin is being held so gently by the new lead of the Saja Boys.
“We are always at your command, (Y/n). Because you are our purpose.”
You open your mouth to speak, to finally give a proper command since they demand it of you. Only for your lips to be covered in Dutch tape, which is played with as Romance comes even closer. The dark blue blush on his face shows just how much he relishes the glare you have for him.
“Since you broke your deal with us, we are free to change. To finally be free to serve our purpose however we see fit.”
It’s then you feel something monstrous intertwine itself with the barrier of the Honmoon pink and orange demon hands replacing the idol demons’ hands. Allowing them to look down on you as well all of them casually caressing your sealed lips.
“You right (Y/n), we have changed.”
There were hands in your hair.
“We’ve grown stronger and it’s all because you gave us a chance. Because you taught us to care.”
There were hands on your back.
“Encouraged us to try.”
Somehow they were in your brain.
“Even if it takes 300 years.”
You sleep in the arms of the Saja Boys—Your boys because you’re all they work for. All they try for. All they’d think to change for.
You are their purpose and they’ll do anything you they demand.
Totally forgot some of these guys died on screen
Whoopsie!
Girl the gif you used in the last cheerleader and football team post made me thinking what if reader was really nerdy (ie any kind of special interest most people view as weird). Or if they mask it that they suddenly spring it on the 2 teams that they are very nerdy (like i am for evillious, twst, and enstars, evillious is vocaloid stuff btw).
Nerd Reader with Yandere Cheerleaders and Football Players
A nerdy reader fits right in between the cheerleaders and football team
They already have a dossier on your internet activity and outspoken interests of course they’d catch on pretty quickly
using that even more to secure the spot with you
“Hey (Y/n) I got to the third chapter of TWST that plot twist is insane.”
“What plot twist, I felt like it was all pretty straight forward for that chapter.”
“Oh the part where he used to be chubby! Could’ve fooled me! Bet he got some work done.”
“Like you did Catherine?”
“On second thought he probably just got rejected one too many times and just couldn’t handle not working out every day like you Andres!”
It’s like this every time
Both teams are one-upping the other with their knowledge of whatever’s got your attention now
Even if you spring it on them in conversation, they still hope to get you rambling away about it for as long as possible
After all they’re all just adoring of your dilated pupils and speedy rants
Even if they genuinely couldn’t care less about the game or series you’re so fond of
And just how nice is it that you get to take two whole clueless teams by the hand and get them immersed in the world you love
Which leads them to their next great idea–cosplay
Going gaga for prime crush material? Not to worry
You’ve got two teams with plenty of Mommy and Daddy’s money to share between them to dress up and maybe even get work done to match the characters you oh so adore
“Yoohoo (Y/n) lookie here…do I look familiar, by any chance?”
“OMGOMGOMGOMG Sateriasis Venomania!?!?!”
“Bingo! How do you like it? Remember my mom’s tailor made this for me…do I look good?
“Look good?! You look amazing!! Can I get a picture?”
“Sure thing, babe as long as you send it to me too.”
“Of course!!”
Their competition gets so intense some poor freshman of the cheerleading and football take it the hardest
Shaping their whole look and personality their on out based on your kin
Of course their captains will let them trample over one another to demonstrate their affections and let you fawn over them
“Poor poor rookies…do you ever feel bad that they haven’t caught on to the real strat, to get their attention?”
“Nah, if they can’t wise up, that’s not my fault.”
“Hmm that’s what I thought too….anyway (Y/n) you ready for our weekly play throughs? I’m just dying to get my hands on those new cards!”
“Oh yeah, coming!”
Be assured that they’re going to use this lovely trait of yours to wriggle into your heart and maybe while your busy gushing you’ll find space for them
Who are they kidding they will be making space whether you want it or not
So often for the skinwalker doppelgangers or the eldritch creatures fitting into the skinsuit of your partner they’re a typical joe. A nobody that has no sway on people other than you and them. Either they’ve taken over the comfortable–salary–average–affection–having boyfriend or the abusive husband who you can immediately tell has been switched because they are so much nicer. The situation is so much worse when the host is an Emperor—Warlord over the Rising Dynasties of the World. A tactical decision to take over the strongest human available to them; without factoring the repercussions of a very complex and vital piece to the hierarchy of the time.
“The Emperor demands your presence.”
“....Now? But my Grace is still on their walk…they always go at this time!”
“Mel it’s fine.”
“He also demands you….bring your appetite.”
“...”
“...”
“His eminence’s words. Not mine.”
Being married to a tyrant emperor isn’t pleasant. Even if you are the prized partner sharing the title as Consort to the Emperor that doesn’t mean it’s smooth sailing. Considering the harem of concubines and their plots, the nobles attempting to curry favor, the newly appointed provinces by the latest conquests of your tyrant Emperor husband. It’s like walking on ice, simply existing by the wrathful Emperor’s side is hard but being his spouse is harder. Obligation masquerading as a relationship is mind-numbingly torturous. Your family’s assets frequently demanded of by the Emperor, your input occasionally over managing new conquests, and then the duties of the bedroom. Brutal, violent, hours dedicated to a man who feels so insecure and entitled that he must maintain the image of spiked pedestal of glorious victory on the privately and on the battlefield. Suddenly demanding you hold hands even in private and be honest when reporting your day.
“Baabbyy~! That mean advisor said I’d have to wait to see you while I sign these papers! Won’t you visit me!”
The one masquerading as your husband is doing a terrible job and it’s up to you to repair the damage done and steer the thing with your husband’s face the right way. Which means crafting a rumor about the Emperor having his mood lifted by the conquest of the surrounding kingdoms. That you advise the staff about mentioning ‘just how good of a mood the Emperor is in’ and postponing meetings with the conquered leaders for another month. Lastly you’ll have to put a wrangle on the one wearing your husband like a cheap suit.
“I don’t know what you are but you’re not acting at all like my husband.”
“Awww~can’t I just be in a great mood?”
“Not when you need to invoke fear among the court. If you’re going to keep being him you need to know somethings. Vital things that won’t make you stand out.”
“Aaand this will not make others suspicious of me?”
“Yes.”
The creature that’s in his body is merciful. Something the Emperor would know nothing about. When you advise he execute the chef that served him something he’s allergic to, he sighs and whines. “Do I really have to?” “Ugh that means the execution ceremony’s gonna take even longer.”
So you’ll have to remind him that they did choose the “Emperor’s face. Which means all the annoying things that come with it.”
For their goofy and childish actions in private they adapt pretty quickly. Using his olive gaze as a tool as deadly as his sword in meetings. Threatening to crush towns based on minor discrepancies like he used to and even executed rebellious staff without the blink of an eye.
Only in the privacy of your room does that change. Back to the relaxed, playful demeanor of the one who walks in the Emperor’s skin. Who delights in a play-by-play of your entire day and your expert assessment of the responses he made posing as the Emperor. Answering his many many many questions about the human race and the different customs. Always listening eagerly as you tiredly regale such simple truths before embracing the tug of sleep.
“My spouse…”
“Yes.”
“There’s something else I’d like to ask you about…”
“What is it?”
“Marriage is a sacred vow…one we have with each other.”
“That’s correct.”
“Then why are there…concubines?”
It shakes the sleep off of you. The usually light tone of questioning about different sayings and court manners transitions into something sincere. Sitting up in bed you explain how an Emperor’s goal is to multiply, to make sure it will be their heir–their name that occupies all the Emperors and Empresses to come. They don’t jump to the next question…instead wrestling with the idea.
“Then why don’t they just impregnate you multiple times? Why have others?”
“Better odds and I’m politically more powerful then the concubines. If any should be born it will be I who rules until they’re an adult.”
They don’t speak. Simply staring at the ceiling as the night burns on. It isn’t until morning where they’re not in bed and your maid informs you of something grim. One of the concubines your late husband’s favorite was missing and her room drenched in blood. It was a bizarre mystery for a concubine as guarded as she to be suspected as nothing more than a stain now. No one saw anything. No one heard anything. But that’s all that happens in a Emperor’s palace. Only when all the sleuths are stumped and the room cordoned off do you question him. Which you expect a clear resounding “no” or even a terrible attempt to lie.
“She attempted to…touch me.”
The pieces of a puzzle fit at their horrified revelation. She organized a private meeting, likely done in secret to meet the Emperor. Something not above the normal for her with the original Emperor. Attempted to advance as their routine dictated and instead offended something entirely non-human. Something with a dedication to their spouse stronger than any temporary pleasure.
“I’ve already promised myself to you…it’s blasphemy to let your spouse have another!”
When you do sleep with them—it it’s soft and idolizing. They touch you like a treasure and kiss over your scars with a reverence you’ve never felt. It’s now that you see the greatest change in character.
With this doppelganger you are a gift. One that they prize above the Empire, actively telling you so through every kiss and grasp at your robe. In no time at all they offer to execute the other concubines and only at your beck and call do they not and it is only at your command do they even emulate your late husband in public.
Because the second they assumed the Emperor’s identity they were promised to you. And should you ask that they revert to their true-self and eliminate all.
