When you have the Spanish and emoji keyboards on your phone, and you type the word "vela" the first emoji that comes up as an option is a sailboat, ⛵️ however, if you type "velas" candles come up 🎂 They are both right as vela has those meanings and many others, and it is also used in many expressions. Let's look at a few: Pasar la noche en vela is when you didn't sleep at all (or barely) for whatever reason, work, worry, studies, etc. You can say: ayer pasé la noche en vela. A la luz de la vela - under candlelight (we covered this one in a previous post) Me gustan los barcos de vela (also called veleros). - I like sailboats. When somebody says: "no tuve vela en el entierro" it means that they didn't have anything to do with whatever happened. Velar can be, to look out for someone or to have a wake for someone. And the last one for today... if you are a photographer and still develop film, if you open the film outside of the dark room "se puede velar" you'll loose it all. Ahora vayan a toda vela - Now go at full sail 😃 Hasta pronto Debbie #spanishtidbits #speakspanish #learnspanish #practice #fun #funwithspanish #lovespanish #español #sleeplessnights
