Memories from this day 2023 at Gougane Barra.
Gougane Barra (Guagán Barra) and forest park looking beautiful despite the misty weather. It is said that St. Finbarr, the patron saint of Cork set up a monastery on an island in Gougane Barra in the 6th century. The name Guagán Barra means 'the rock-cleft of Barra' or Barra’s (Finbarr’s) Rock. The present day church dates back to 1700. It is located in the Shehy mountains near Ballingeary in West Cork. Gougane Barra is actually the source of Cork’s famous River Lee. The forest park was opened in 1964 and covers almost 340 acres.
