Chapter 1 -
The warmth of the bath water soothed every inch of her. After the long day out with her husband, she was ready to just relax. She wiggled her toes above the surface and took some soapy bubbles in her hand and blew them into the air, the dispersing of them making her face light up.
Of course, business was still priority, and they had to make an appearance at the restaurant downtown. Coriolanus had to meet up with his partner and long-time friend, Festus Creed, to talk business. She on the other hand had to be the pretty on his arm and make nice with his cousin, Tigris. It wasn’t hard. She liked Tigris. She got together with her three times a week to go to a yoga class in Tigris’ apartment building. It was just about the only time she got to go out without her husband.
Lucy Gray shoved down the stifling feeling that always rose up when she thought too hard about how imprisoned she’d become over the last 20 years.
It wasn’t that she didn’t love Coriolanus anymore, because she definitely did. He treasured her, gave her the quality time she craved, and space when she needed it to do her own thing – within reason. Not to mention their lives were the epitome of lavish luxury. So, what was she complaining about? Especially tonight on their anniversary.
She closed her eyes and inhaled sharply before sinking down in the bathtub, completely covered by the water. Just for a few seconds. Just to clear her head and wash her face, drench her hair, be enveloped in warmth.
Then she came up, gasping for air. She clutched the sides and sat up, her hair sticking to her back and some to her forehead.
“Everything okay in there?” Her husband’s concerned voice came on the other side of the door.
“Yeah,” came out sounding a bit strained, so she tried again. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“You sure?”
And his tenderness washed over her, making her forget the feeling of being trapped inside her marriage. Inside this life he’d built for both of them.
“Yeah,” she said, much stronger this time. “I’m just going to wash my hair, then I’ll be out.”
There was a lingering silence, and then she heard his hand land on the doorknob.
Oh, god.
She’d locked it instinctively, as she did whenever she was alone. But she wasn’t alone in their large penthouse tonight. He was there with her, albeit outside the bathroom. And he wouldn’t like that he couldn’t get to her.
She didn’t want to get into a fight tonight.
“Okay,” he said. “Can’t wait to see you in that dress.”
The warmth returned to his voice, and she relaxed.
“I love you,” she said, giving him the extra reassurance he probably needed.
“I love you, too,” he said.
Then she heard his footsteps as they walked down the hall and heard as he started talking to someone else, probably into his phone, probably to Festus or maybe the restaurant owner to let them know they’d be late arriving tonight.
She breathed a sigh of relief and scooted to the other side of the bathtub to drain the water. Carefully, she used the bar and side of the tub to stand up, pulled the curtain all the way over to the far side and rinsed off in the shower, as well as shampooed and conditioned her hair.
When she was finished, she got out, blow-dried her hair, applied her make-up and put on the knee-length black dress that sparkled around the hem and elbow-length sleeves.
She smiled at herself in the mirror, knowing he would approve, and that her shoes would give her a couple extra inches to her height.
She didn’t even have to look around for her shoes. They were immediately to her left on the floor outside the bathroom.
“Oh. Did you put these here?” she asked and slipped into the high heels, as he quietly approached.
“You look beautiful,” he said, and she looked up and smiled.
“Thank you.”
He dipped his head down to kiss her freshly painted lips, his hand sinking into her long, brunette curls.
“I have something for you.”
She figured as much, but she acted surprised anyway when he picked up a slim, large, velvet box before her and opened it.
Her heart leapt in her throat. She’d never get used to all the sparkly.
“Coriolanus.”
He smirked and set the box aside after lifting the diamond-studded necklace from it.
“Turn around.”
She did as he asked, sweeping her hair to the side so he could slip the strand beneath her tresses and secure the latch in the back.
When she turned back around, looking up into his crystal blue eyes looking down at her mystified, she felt her love for him overflowing.
“How did I get so lucky?” he whispered.
She lifted her hands to his cheeks.
“How did I?”
He smoothed his hands down her arms to her waist and pulled her closer, kissing her again and again, his grip getting a little rough with the dress as his desire for her swelled.
She broke apart reluctantly, breathing heavily, blushing a little at his sudden intense show of affection.
“The restaurant, Honey.”
He swallowed and nodded, struggling to find his voice for a moment.
“Right.”
“Unless…?”
As much as she hated being cooped up in their penthouse for hours most days, they’d been out all day. She’d soak up a night of love-making on their anniversary in a heartbeat.
“No, you’re right. Festus is expecting me, and Tigris is looking forward to seeing you again, I know. We can’t let them down.”
Lucy Gray forced a smile.
“Should I call the restaurant? Tell them that we’re going to be a bit late?”
He shook his head and took her hands in his own, lifting them to his lips for a sweet, possessive kiss.
“No need. I already did. You ready to go?”
She eyed his face in the dim light and licked her thumb to wipe away lipstick marks at the corners of his lips.
“I should probably fix my lipstick.”
His eyes glittered.
“In the car,” he said. “Grab your purse.”
“Okay.”
She swept past him, swaying her hips just before she snatched up her purse hanging from a hook across their bedroom. When she returned to him, she could see the desire pure as day in his eyes.
“You sure you don’t want to stay home?” she asked once more on a laugh.
He swallowed.
“I’ll have you when we get home.”
She slipped her hand into his.
“Is that a promise?”
“A guarantee.”
