I am hard-pressed to find any type of flaw on Huntly’s single, “Low Grade Buzz,” which will appear as the title track on a new album. The namesake hum comes through as part of the instrumentation, as intentional feedback, and as a reminder of endless entropy.

Three swift months have passed us by since we first featured Huntly with much eagerness on IHM. At the time, the Melbourne trio, already renowned back home for their live dynamism, sparked our love for them with Drop Gear, which you can revisit via our feature, here. We now relish in the announcement of Huntly’s debut album Low Grade Buzz, whose title track is an ethereal ballad constructed to communicate life’s bittersweet ache, like what you encounter during a comedown the day after a euphoric night. As singer and songwriter Elspeth explains, “It was written while I lay in Tempelhof airfield in Berlin after a night out, accompanied by a dinky Yamaha keyboard I bought from an op shop and carried around Europe with me. It’s about fullness and emptiness and being a bit strung out after staying up all night.” Low Grade Buzz is a song of poignant introspection. Its warped, droning production successfully transfers that precarious titular buzz straight through our ears, reminding us of those moments when it feels like we’re free falling, grasping at thin air and trying to hold on to the dissipating highs while gazing into a dark chasm angling to swallow us up whole. Uncertainty takes hold of us, decay overwhelms us, but we find comfort in Huntly and their modulated tones, whose stark intimacy are somewhat like Wet, cushioned in a bed of ambient, downtempo electronica.
