Pop-punk has always been considered a fun genre. Itâs seen as an energetic style of expressive punk and has never really been taken seriously. It is perceived as a style played by teens who sing about girls and insert as much profanity into their party-fuelled lyrics as possible. If fun is your first priority then itâs hard to be taken seriously, but on the flip-side, just because you approach music seriously doesnât mean you canât have fun. Thatâs exactly what Perthâs LOWLIGHT plan on proving as they set out to introduce themselves to the nation as pop-punkâs more-serious older brother, while still ensuring that they have fun along the way. LOWLIGHT started the same way many Perth bands start, with members meeting through previous bands who all shared the local stages together. Some of these bands take flight and some of these bands stay grounded, but you can rest assured that those individuals who are dedicated to their craft will forge ahead and create something new out of the ashes of the previous bands that all shared those same stages together. This is exactly what LOWLIGHT has done. LOWLIGHT consists of ex-members of some of Perthâs most successful punk and hardcore acts, and look to use that experience to quickly assert themselves as your new favourite âseriousâ pop punk band. With Break Even, We Are The Emergency and Stars Donât Fall having toured nationally and internationally, Sim (drums, ex Break Even), Sam (Bass, We Are The Emergency) and Ben (guitar, ex Stars Donât Fall) bring experience to a band who are ready to get their hands dirty. With a taste of the touring life, the three are set to again spread their wings and hit the road and with Trav (guitar, ex Break) and Jay (vocals, ex Amend) rounding out a lineup of like-minded musicians who are focused on hitting the ground running. LOWLIGHT are just as keen to hit the road as they are to get back to the same local stages that the members first shared when their previous bands were grinding it out. The beauty this time around is that as individuals they all know what works and what doesnât, and as a band this renewed focus allows them to all work for the same common goal; to create a sound and live show that theyâre damn proud of. With a handful local shows and a weekender in Melbourne under their belt, LOWLIGHT are prepared to hit the road and they might just become your new favourite band.
