                MINERVA HADN’T HEARD    the door open,  nor had she heard footsteps approaching her.  She had been distracted,  she supposed.  Normally she was much more on edge,  much more observant than that,  aware of even the slightest sound.  But not now.  Now she felt groggy,  barely half-conscious as she tried to scrub the blood from her skin. 

                Lifting her head quickly from where it rested against the side of the tub,  her eyes widened,  every muscle in her body suddenly tense when she heard the other woman speak.  But as her gaze fell on Lydia,  she relaxed,  just a little.  

                “I don’t need help,”  she mumbled,  averting her gaze.  Her shoulders slumped,  head hanging as she rinsed the cloth in her hand again before lifting it to continue scrubbing none-too-gently at her skin.  “I’m fine.”

            Tilda had been bringing Minerva her breakfast like she always did, though the moment she had pushed the door open, the tray had dropped right out of her hands, dishes shattering loudly on the floor. Minerva was nowhere to be seen, but glaringly obvious in the middle of the floor was a pool of blood, more blood than anyone could stand to lose and still live. She could swear her heart stopped. No no no. Had the Baron finally gone too far? It was only a matter of time, it had always just been a matter of time. She could feel tears starting to run down her cheeks as she turned and fled the room.

            Rounding the corner, she found herself running straight into Lydia. Lydia? What was she doing here? Was Quinn here too? She had thought they weren’t due for a few more days still. It didn’t matter.

            She noticed blood stains on the woman’s dress, and stared up at her with wide eyes.

            “What happened? Is she okay? Please tell me she’s okay, she has to be!” Tilda couldn’t lose her. She was one of the only people here who ever showed her any kindness. She needed that. Minerva had to be okay, she just had to.

                IT HAD BEEN LATE    when she had returned,  as she had promised she would.  Finding Thom already sleeping  ( much to her relief -- he clearly needed it ),  the thought crossed her mind to simply leave him to rest.  But she had given her word that she would come back,  she wouldn’t go back on that.  She wasn’t entirely certain where the sudden impulse had come from,  but soon she was discarding her clothing and pulling on one of his shirts instead before slipping beneath the blankets beside him.  Her hand found one of his,  a faint smile crossing her lips as she drifted off to sleep with much more ease than was familiar to her. 

                Moiraine had been awake for some time by the time Thom began to stir,  curled up in the chair that sat in the corner of the room,  a book propped open in her lap.  She flipped absently through the pages,  reading a passage here and their,  but with little focus.  Her gaze flickered over to the gleeman when he spoke,  and a hint of a smile began to tug at the corners of her mouth.  “Well,  I would assume so,  considering it was in your room,”  she replied in an even voice,  a small shrug accompanying her response.  

                Setting the book aside,  she stood,  crossing the room to sit on the edge of the bed,  the back of her hand pressing to his cheek and then his forehead -- there seemed to be no more trace of the fever that had lingered the day before.  “How are you feeling now?”

                OH,  SHE WANTED TO BELIEVE THAT,    she really did.  Dark eyes fixed on the small fire in front of her,  and she took a brief moment to turn that statement over in her mind,  dwelling on it.  Finally her gaze flickered over to him,  quizzical,  skeptical,  but kind.  It seemed to Moiraine that he was trying to be  reassuring -- she wouldn’t fault him for that. 

                “I think you are just as aware as I that  neither  of us is particularly safe at the moment.”  Despite her words,  there was no trace of harshness in her voice,  and a slight hint of a smile tugged at the corners of her mouth in the moment that followed.  “Still,  I appreciate the sentiment.”

                   SHE DOES HER BEST    not to give him a full-on glare  ( they’re stuck together on what she now considers to be an  annoyingly  small ship for the foreseeable future,  and the least she can do is at least  attempt  to a little more friendly ),  but Leia’s eyes narrow slightly nonetheless,  a small frown settling on her lips.  “You wish,”  she shoots back,  a slight roll of her eyes accompanying the response.  “I’m  just fine  over here.”  She’s cold,  yes,  but in that moment she would much prefer to simply tough it out the best she can.
