The Room with the Keys | Valery & Loys | Flashback
“Stay here,” Adam had said, “Be back in a bit.” And then he was gone, up the stairs to finish the list of tasks he had been given.
Valery had come early and had expected she’d have to wait, but she didn’t mind. She’d much rather wait here, than back at the inn with Marsilla. She’d finished her morning chores and would have to return before the evening crowds, but until then she meant to stay as far away from there as she could.
One day, I’ll leave this place for good, she thought. I’ll sail North and never come back again.
The cat who lived in the kitchens, brushed up against her legs. She reached down and pet him, smiling as he purred. Then in an instant, he was scampering down the hall. She followed, calling him softly when she stopped short, hearing two strange voices coming from one of the side passages, cutting her off from the kitchen.
The only other way to go was up the stairs to avoid being seen. She took them two at a time and when she came up, she realized she was no longer in the servant’s part of the castle. She paused for a moment, admiring the grand tapestries that hung on the walls and the views that the large dragon glass windows had of the ocean.
She didn’t linger long as she heard more voices and she took another flight of stairs to avoid them.
“You there!” She turned and saw that a guard had spotted her. Perhaps he only had meant to tell her something and wasn’t suspicious, but her first reaction was to bolt and she found herself running as fast as she could through endless hallways and up winding staircases, and still she heard his persistent step behind her’s.
Adam is going to kill me.
Opening the first door she came to, she opened it and shut it fast. She pressed her ear up against the door, finally taking a breathe when she heard him go past.
She heard a soft whimper behind her and instinctively, she drew the knife she kept at her belt as she turned and pointed it at the small man. “Who are you?” She asked, as though he was the one out of place here. But as she looked around her, she saw that she already knew.
Here, cowering before her amongst his keys, was the Warden of the South.
