How did your proposed project engage with the idea of Self x culture? Ai weiwei is an artist that bases some of his ideas off the fact that there is a huge amount of censorship and restrictions in China. His art is viewed as controversial in the eyes of the Chinese government. As someone who enjoys art and was born in China I can’t imagine being restricted on what I can create. This was one of the many quotes by Ai weiwei that I could really relate to.

How did the project evolve from ideation to final piece? It came out way better than I had initially anticipated.

Other reflections: I think maybe this could’ve been done on a bigger scale but I’m really happy with how it came out.

What cultural contexts and themes inspire you and influence you? - Born in China, raised in Brooklyn I have different cultural aspects that make me the person I am today. Being raised in New York, I've always loved graffiti culture. I think it's one of the things I love most about where I live. It's controversy and whether or not graffiti is vandalism or art make me enjoy seeing it even more. Also being from a Chinese family they have an immense influence on who I am. My parents like to talk about celebrities in China and Chinese art. Project Proposal: Combining graffiti culture and famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. Most recently my mom talked about the artist Ai Weiwei and his controversial art. The controversy over his artwork and graffiti are two things that seem like they're just asking to be put together in one project.

These prints were inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci because he always explored his surroundings and drew all sorts of things that was around him. So I thought that I should explore the city I live in. So I combined all the great things about NYC and drew them However, I didn't know what to do with them but then I thought I saw should do prints because I have never done them before and Leonardo Da Vinci also tried unique things. For instance, he wrote his notes backward (no one knows exactly why) but this was very unique no one would write their notes backward. So I thought I should do prints because they are also very unique because you can keep reproducing different kinds of prints using one board. Therefore, I decided to do prints on NYC

My finished piece is called "Sadness Within the City". I painted using the techniques of Francoise Nielly and drew with inspirations from Thomas Fedro. I am satisfied with my ending and glad that it came out the way I expected it to be.

Self_Partner Assignment 2

My partner for this assignment was Debra Hurd. I decided to do a land/cityscape type piece insipired by the her work and a collaboration between my ideas of brining light to rainy nights (or afternoons in this case) and Hurd’s ideas of recreating environment even at its’ unfavored weather conditions.

The coloring is purposely messy because as mentioned, I lack oil paints as materials so in order to provide the same feel and expression of emotion, I had to make make a mess.  No; it does not appear to be rainy in this image, bu I decided that rain would distract the beauty orginially shown on a clear day. Instead, to indicate a hint of rain, I colored the road in washable marker and then in the area I had shaded during my sketch, I dripped water in that one spot to wash the color slightly.

SELF & PARTNER_Assignment2 1) How did your proposed project engage with the idea of Self x Partner? I collaborated with tattoo artist, Don Ed Hardy. As shown above all of the drawings have an old school tattoo style. Combined with the idea of a collage that I decided to make 3 dimensional. 2) How did the project evolve from ideation to final piece? I like drawing and collages and I thought I could combine them together. With an added idea that I could turn the piece into something 3D. 3) Other reflections: I think this project went very well I throughly enjoyed the process of creating it. I think it came out better than I had anticipated.

SELF & PARTNERS_Assignment2

For this project I chose to work with two exceptional artists, Thomas Fedro (bottom) and Francoise Nielly (top). Their works are somewhat similar in that they are abstract and use eye-catching colors, but Fedro focuses more pop art and pairing it with abstract art. Nielly does more realistic work with oil paints and abstract. Lately I have been drawn to abstract art (which honestly isn't my forte), but when I stumbled across these two artists I immediately fell in love with abstract. I am going to try to accomplish doing a piece with pop art inspired by Fedro and color it based on the way Nielly uses his colors.
