I know its silly to worry about something that doesn't exist yet but, if they do make a Luigi's Mansion movie I hope that Illumination at least tries to give it cohesive plot.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the first Mario movie and while I have my problems with the second one I still like how Illumination is handlining the series as a whole.
But it wouldn't kill them if they added like a little bit of a character arc or a interesting plot point or even a cool lore idea into the movie.
I can't remember if its explained in the games but I'd like to see how they'd explain why King Boo looks different in the Luigi's Mansion games vs the mainline Mario games or even if they're the same person.
(I know it has something to do with the gem but I feel like it does something more to him besides making him look more spooky and kinda purple, if that makes sense)
In defense of Galaxy, there were arcs, such as Peach’s flat arc in her journey to find Rosalina, and Bowser’s corruption arc after he sincerely tries his hand at being a good guy. The issue was that there were so many other characters and plot points thrown into the mix that the crumbs of development we got were lost in the weeds.
The thing is the Mario Movies, (or at least the two we've gotten so far), are very open about the fact that their primary goal is to take the audience on a big whirlwind tour, filled with fantastical worlds and kooky characters. Fair enough given the nature of the games… but Luigi's Mansion is narrower in scope, more focused on investigation and problem solving than a world-trotting, goomba-stomping adventure.
There’s a chance a LM Movie will pad things out with elements from other Mario games in order to keep the plot high-octane and visually stimulating, but I hope they use the limitations of a smaller franchise to focus a little bit more on character development and emotional moments, rather than just throwing a million plotpoints and cameos at the screen.
Especially since this one is about Luigi, and if there’s any character who’s easy pickings for a heroic arc, it’s Luigi.
Funny you should mention the gemstone crown though, because I have an entire post examining this very topic as it relates to the game.
TL;DR: there’s a surprising amount of cohesion regarding the effects crystals have on ghosts, from the gems in the Evershade Valley mine, to the crystal material of the Dark Moon, to the mysterious gem in King Boo's crown. It’s a wellspring of cool lore possibilities, and I really hope future games (and future movies for that matter 🤞) take full advantage.
