I don't know if anyone else needs to hear this but I do so here we go. If you are trans and you go by a variation of your birth name, it is still okay to consider your previous name a dead name and it is absolutely not okay for people to just continue using it if you don't want them to.

My full name is mildly long and I used to only go by one shortened nickname of two possibilites. Now I specifically only go by the other shortened version and the full thing for formalities. The nickname I don't use? My deadname. For so many reasons it is unacceptable for people that I am out to to use it, regardless if it is still a variation of my name now. Why? Because I said so.

You and only you can dictate your identity and you deserve to be respected. You are valid.
