Rec: he sleeps in fits and starts, by lucianwolf
he sleeps in fits and starts, by lucianwolf (R/NC-17 [FRAO - implied CHAN], 1k-ish)
This is short, but so incisive: a stream-of-consciousness meditation in Snape's POV on Harry - his embodiment of both James and Lily, and how he somehow exceeds them both. It teeters on the verge of meta, but remains grounded in the characters through Snape's grasping greed for Harry, despite (or because of) his awareness of what Harry has suffered. This is a difficult little fic to summarize - the dreams of Harry that Snape harbors, always seeming to slip imperceptibly into Snape's waking world.
A Taste:
He tries not to think about it, but Harry is just as feline in real life as he is in Snape's dreams: lithe and quick and even a little anxious. He always dreams about Harry like that: ready, wanting, and nervous - the little bastard knows what he wants, but he's terrified of it. He simply needs to be coaxed into taking it. And perhaps that's the most erotic thing of all: the Chosen One on his knees, afraid and conflicted and determined. Every time it starts out in apology: Harry, defensive and angry and embarrassed, knowing what he means to say but tripping over his father's proud arrogance. And maybe that's where it begins: it's James standing before him - angry and confused and tempered by Lily with her strong and honest determination. Harry has inherited all of it: the best and the worst, and he manages everything with perfect imperfection.
