When Lucius shows Pete the portrait he drew on the wall ahead of his proposal, I actually like that the portrait isn’t that amazing. For one, drawing on a wall isn’t like drawing in a journal/sketchpad, and the different angle could’ve given him some trouble. But also, Lucius usually draws dicks, so he doesn’t have that much practice drawing faces (other than Ed’s in season 2.)***

What I especially like, though, is how moved Pete is by the portrait. It’s not all that flattering, but it’s clear how much it means that Lucius did this for him. It’s a thoughtful gesture, and it shows that Lucius listened to what Pete said earlier and is trying to move forward.

***I’d have laughed so hard if Lucius had drawn a portrait of Pete’s dick on the wall and Pete had had the exact same reaction, with that soft/surprised, “Oh my god, it’s me!”

Favorite Scenes Between...Ed & Lucius

Oh, I love Ed and Lucius together. All their season 1 interactions are so good! They always bring an interesting mix of energies to their scenes together, and this relationship is a major part of my Give Ed Community agenda. Love it!

When Ed meets the crew in 1x04

I really like the quick reaction shot of Lucius looking starstruck/turned on(?) as Ed is going around greeting people. That tight nervous smile and the way he’s gripping the handle of his mallet? Love it!

Not to mention, it’s a big shift from his blase, “You know, I thought he’d be taller,” moment earlier!

When Ed asks Lucius to count down 1 hour and 47 minutes in 1x04

Great dynamic here. I love the way Lucius is instantly wide-eyed and stammering when he realizes Blackbeard is in Stede’s room, while Ed doesn’t even react to Lucius’s entrance. Terrific contrast between Lucius’s, “S-Sorry, er, didn't mean to bother you,” and Ed’s, “No bother” (never once looking away from Stede!)

“Tell me, can you count?” I’ve talked before about Ed not making assumptions or judgments about what people can/can’t do. I like that Lucius has a yeah, duh! reaction to the initial question, but he has to stop and think about it for a second when Ed asks if he count backwards

“I want you to start counting back from 1 hour 47 minutes, and I want you to start…now.” omg, that is the most extra-ass way Ed could have accomplished this. As a means of measuring that length of time, it’s both bonkers and counterproductive, but he wants the drama of the countdown we’re gonna get later in the episode

Awww, Lucius backing away to the door while counting backwards: bumping into furniture, accidentally counting in the wrong direction and having to compensate, acknowledging Ed’s request for a cold rag. Squeeeeee!

When Lucius reaches the end of his countdown in 1x04

Shot, chaser!

Lucius is so bright and smiley when he comes in with 20 seconds left on the clock, gesturing to Ed with Stede’s journal like, See, Blackbeard, I came to find you like you said! But he shifts on a dime to looking concerned after Ed tells Stede, “Uh-oh, time's almost up”

lol, Lucius screaming, “Time’s up!!!” and sort of hiding behind the journal! In addition to his backwards-counting abilities, he was a great choice for this assignment, because he feeds right into the tension Ed is building

When Ed questions Stede’s treasure map in 1x07

“If it were real, why would she have sold it to you? Why not keep the map herself, and find the treasure herself?” “Oh, strong question. Love that.” Great bit, with some strong timing from Nathan! Lucius doesn’t do a ton in this scene, but his presence adds that little something extra to take the whole thing up a notch

After Stede announces, “On your feet! We're having a day,” I like the quick moment of commiseration between Ed and Lucius with Ed asking, “Is he always this highly strung?” and Lucius’s straightforward, “Yeah”

When Stede finds the candied melon silk moth in 1x07

As Lucius is dismayed at swallowing a fly, it kills me that Ed grumbles, “At least you got lunch, I'm fucking starving.” Hee!

When Ed swats another fly on his face and decides he’s going back to the ship, I like that Lucius goes after him. He is doing his best to follow Stede’s instructions and make sure Ed has a good time, even though it’s an uphill battle

Even before we get to the snake—oh, the snake!—I love Ed’s response to Lucius pointing out how intense he is. “No, I'm not. I know how to relax. See? I'm actually quite relaxed right now.” It’s just such a self-conscious look, this is me relaxing! pose

And of course, the snake!!! Not that Ed is really interacting with Lucius, but he’s there, so I’m counting it. Taika is so goddamn funny throughout this whole bit, especially when he dropkicks the snake! I like how Lucius just clutches the shovel and watches with his mouth hanging open

When Lucius chews Ed out in 1x07

The only reason this isn’t my favorite Ed-Lucius scene is because the blanket fort scene exists. I love it so much!

I really like that Lucius is staring straight ahead when he first says, “You don't have to be a dick about it.” He’s pretty tentative in his interactions with Ed early on, so it makes sense that, to take such a big swing here, he has to start while he’s not looking at Ed

Then he finds his nerve, looking Ed straight on as he repeats, “I said, ‘Don't be a dick.’ Okay?”

When Lucius tells Ed Stede put the treasure hunt together for him, I love how immediately Ed asks, “For me? Why?” Bonus points for the way he turns to look at Stede, awwww!

“Look, you're very cool, and you wear leather, okay, so maybe you won't understand this, but everyone is worried all of the time whether they're interesting or adventurous enough for you.” This is my favorite line in the speech. I adore it, and Nathan’s delivery is fantastic! 

“That bizarre little man over there likes you very much, and you like him.” First, Lucius calling Stede a “bizarre little man” tickles me. But also, I think it’s important that Lucius has clocked both of their feelings. He’s not just trying to help Stede anymore, he’s also warning Ed not to miss out on something great

I just love Ed’s expression as he turns and walks back to Stede. It feels like a mixture of chastened, introspective, and shy, which makes it pair so well with Lucius’s defiant, “You can stab me in the face now”

The fact that Ed ropes Lucius into helping him cheer Stede up is such a great detail. I like that both Stede and Ed enlist Lucius to help the other have fun at different points in the day, plus I like the subtle get over here gesture and accompanying head-jerk Ed does

“That little bit there on that little scrappy bit of paper, that looks like a tree, doesn't it, boy?” So cute!!

After Ed and Lucius fumble over whether the “little squiggly bit” is a river or a road, I love that Lucius just adds, “Yeah, clear as day”

When Lucius asks if he should prepare the shovel, I’m obsessed with Taika’s delivery on, “Er, well, we didn't come all this way to not dig something up!”

Ughhhhh, Lucius’s smile before he tells Ed, “That was very sweet,” I love it!

“Don't, or I will stab you in your fucking face.” Ha!

When Lucius returns Ed’s stuff in 1x08

I love this scene—so great!

It’s interesting that Ed is so subdued here. While Lucius is all forceful and hands-on-his-hips, Ed’s voice is soft and his shoulders are slumped. Even though Lucius is treating Ed like the heartbreaker—understandably so, given that he’s seen how wrecked Stede is—it’s clear that none of this is what Ed wanted

“Your stuff. All of it. So, don't try reaching out looking for something. It's an obvious ploy, I've used it before.” Lucius was right, he is fantastic at breakups!

When Ed notes the lack of lavender soap, I love Nathan’s almost-incredulous delivery on, “It's not a care package!”

I like that Lucius starts to walk away, then turns back to ask, “D’you know, he really liked you? I hope you know that.” Like, yes, he’s twisting the knife a little, but I also feel like it’s a very slight overture toward Ed, in a scene where Lucius’s attitude is otherwise very screw you and the horse you rode in on. Even though he leans more toward forceful again when he gets to, “I hope you know that,” this moment is a little bit like Lucius taking Ed by the shoulders and going, “wtf are you doing? Get over yourself, go back to him, and be happy together!”

When Lucius visits Ed in the blanket fort in 1x10

I love the mix of energies at the start of this scene. Lucius is so nervous/jumpy when he comes in and doesn’t see Ed, while Ed’s voice from inside the blanket fort is just so soft and subdued

“The door's the blue cushion,” always makes me smile

Oof, Ed’s shrug when Lucius asks if it’s safe to have a candle in the blanket fort! My heart!!

I really like the awkwardness of Lucius asking, “Okay, well…what have you been up to?” It pairs so well with Ed trying to act like there’s nothing noteworthy about (a freshly-shaven) Blackbeard wearing Stede’s robe, lying in a blanket fort and eating marmalade straight from the jar

“No, it's not about me. Yeah, it's someone else holding on. Someone entirely fictional…” Oh god, while he’s gently running his finger along the candle and staring into the flame? Ughhhhh, I love this scene so much!

:weeping: “And this fictional character…he's having a hard time?” I swear, this is one of the single kindest scenes on television—I just adore how gentle Lucius is with Ed after hearing his lyrics

Taika’s acting is just incredible here. The way his face crumbles and he starts to tear up, that soft little admission of, “Yeah, maybe”? Omgggg!

It’s really sweet that Lucius keeps going along with the “fictional character” from Ed’s song, suggesting, “Maybe it's best he just lets go.” And Ed’s quavery, “Do you mean just curl up into a ball and die?” is so heartbreaking!

“What if it's not a death? What if life just…begins again?” Sobbing, my god!! Characters softly offering emotional support to one another is my greatest weakness

When Ed performs for the crew in 1x10

Lucius doesn’t have any lines in this scene, but I like some of Nathan’s reaction shots off Taika

Hee, I like Lucius’s but am I, though? face when Ed says, “If any of you guys wanna express yourselves in the same way that I just did with my song, I'm sure that Lucius would be more than happy to write down your lyrics”

Lucius looks surprised, but also so delighted, at the thought of having a talent show—adorable!

When Lucius runs into Ed by the door in 2x05

I’ve said before that, while I certainly understand why it happened, it makes me sad that the events of the Kraken era fractured Ed’s relationship with Lucius so badly, given that he was one of the crew members who was closest to Ed in season 1 (ditto for Frenchie.) As such, I wouldn’t go so far as to call their interactions in this episode “favorites” of mine, and this scene in particular can be hard to take

However, I do really like some of the aspects of Taika and Nathan’s performances here and the way they play off each other, so I still want to highlight the parts I enjoy

The timing with, “There is nothing you can do that would fix this,” and, “I will let you push me off the ship,” is great!

I like Nathan’s delivery on, “...Actually, that could be huge,” and Ed’s nervous/pained smile in response is soooooo good!

When Lucius pushes Ed off the ship in 2x05

Again, not exactly a favorite, but Nathan and Taika are both terrific in this scene

All my love for Ed’s sandals flying off when Lucius pushes me over!

“Fucking eat my shit, Blackbeard!!” always cracks me up

When Lucius exclaims, “How does that feel, bitch?!”, I like that Ed just replies, “Cold!”

As much as this whole scene is an attempt to speedrun making amends, Ed asking if Lucius feels better/has closure is nice—he does want to fix things

If you ship Lucius Spriggs x Izzy Hands, why?

This is a genuine question to all the sprizzy shippers, because I sincerely never understood the appeal. In the first season they only ever had hostile exchanges, yet already then, people would ship the two.

I would often see the image of a deleted scene, where Izzy was violently grabbing Lucius by the hair and the latter had a painful expression on his face. The image was used as a sort of example of their ship, but why? One party was being violent towards the other and the other seemed uncomfortable/pained by it?

Sure, they were a little less hostile towards each other in season 2, but once again, they didn't have many 1on1 conversations, only 2 that I can think of. During one of them, Izzy smoked a cigarette that was in Lucius' mouth and then proceeded to put it back there, but Lucius slapped it away in distress. During the other, Izzy gave Lucius a wooden shark and told him to let go of his trauma, which was somewhat sweet.

In conclusion, I just can't see the appeal of their ship. Can someone who ships them explain their view of why they find the ship so appealing? Why do you ship them?
