𝐒𝐲𝐧𝐨𝐩𝐬𝐢𝐬: Having taken a wrong turn while fleeing mischief, the visitor ends up deeper in the woods than intended; where silence clings, time forgets to move, and a strange man with tired wings awaits in a garden that shouldn’t exist.

𝐓𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞: Angel Of The Woods

You weren’t supposed to be here. That much, you’re certain of.

You only meant to get away from the twins. Their laughter still rings in your ears—sharp and sugar-slick, too sweet to be sincere. You hadn’t even meant to run this far, but the Mansion's halls twisted like syrup in a fever dream, and somehow the forest had started blurring into your vision. Whatever, it seemed safer than their hands.

At first it felt like any other forest, but soon the air turned still. Soundless. Not dead—just quiet in a way that made your breath feel too loud. As if invisible hands were wrapped around your neck, suffocating you.

The birds fell silent. The wind no longer touched your clothes. Every step was heavier than the last, as though the earth resented your presence.

Then you found the garden.

It wasn’t marked. There was no gate, no path, just an open patch of space that had no business being so untouched. Wildflowers bloomed without pattern, vines curled around trunks like they were trying to choke the trees back to sleep,

You should’ve turned back.

But then you saw him.

He stood with his back to you, silver-blue hair soft against his neck. Pale wings draped behind him, not pristine— frayed at the ends and heavy with wear. He held something in his hands—an apple, unnaturally red, its shine like glass.

“You shouldn’t be here,” he says, without turning.

His voice is soft. Not angry, not cold. Just… tired. The kind of tired that doesn’t come from lack of sleep but from carrying something far too long.

“I didn’t mean to intrude,” you say, breathless. “I was just—”

“Running,” he finishes. “From the twins.”

He turns then, slowly, like movement itself has become a burden. His eyes are a pale pink, almost colorless in the dim garden light, yet you feel them settle on you with quiet intensity. Not cruel—just watchful, careful, like you might vanish if he blinks too long.

You nod, hesitant. You feel like a child who wandered too close to something dangerous. Maybe you did.

“I got lost.."

“They usually do.”

He turns fully, and your breath catches. There’s nothing terrifying about him—not like the twins, not like the forest—but something in his presence makes you feel too seen. Like he’s measuring you against something only he remembers.

He gestures towards a bench half-swallowed by moss, and you sit without protest. He remains where he is, lowering himself beneath a crooked apple tree and begins carving something from a piece of pale wood. His hands moved slowly, wrapped in worn gloves, each motion careful but weary.

You watch him for a while in silence. You don’t know how long. The world doesn’t move here—not the leaves, not the air, not the time.

Eventually, he speaks,

“I’ll walk you back.”

You blink, startled, “Back?”

“To the Mansion. You’re not ready for this place.”

You want to ask what he means, but you don’t. Not yet.

He rises with slow grace and brushes bark and petal from his coat. He doesn't look at you again, but you follow when he begins to walk.

You pass trees you don’t remember seeing, and yet every step feels more familiar than the last.

However, your eyes catches something glinting beyond the trees to the side of the path you're on. Red stones lighting up another path that was never there, you could've sworn you heard soft whispers beckoning you closer

“Don't follow the red stones.” He shuts down any lingering thoughts you had, causing you to turn back to him instantly. Embarrassed having been caught despite not knowing for what.

As if sensing your underlying question, he sighs softly, “...Just..don't.”

You nodded lightly, not wishing to press on anymore. The further you go, the more the Mansion feels real again, and the more the garden behind you begins to feel like a story.

Then, finally, unable to contain yourself, you spoke.

“What was that place?” you ask, carefully.

He doesn’t stop walking. “It’s not a place,” he starts. “Not really. It’s a tether.”

“To what?”

“To me.”

You look at him. He keeps his eyes forward, wings tucked close, almost hidden.

“I used to be something else,” he sighs. “I helped people find their way. That was all I ever did.”

He pauses like he's not sure if he should go on, but he does.

“Then I started choosing who I wanted to help. Not based on need. Just… because I cared. Too much.”

You frown. “That doesn’t sound wrong.”

“It wasn’t. But it was still forbidden. In some sense.” He hums thoughtlessly.

The trees begin to thin. You can almost see the faint outline of the Mansion ahead.

“I got lost too,” he continues. “And now I stay where the lost end up.”

And you understand that he doesn’t stay because he hopes someone will save him. He stays because he still feels responsible. Because even now, after everything, he can’t stop guiding the lost.

He stops walking.

“I won't go further,” he says simply. “This is enough.”

You hesitate, then nod. “Will I see you again?”

He doesn’t answer immediately.

“If you get lost again,” the corners of his lips twitches upwards faintly into a soft smile.

“I’ll be there.”

You smile, having an odd feeling you'll see him again very soon.

When you step through the trees, the garden is gone. The path is gone. And so is he.

A Children's Story.

L: Once upon a time... In the world I came from...

L: There was a hatter, he appeared suddenly, as an apprentice to a hatter unknown to everyone. It's not common for a hatmaker to be so talked about... but this one was different-

R, M, and E: Oh! I recognize that!

L: Hm?

E: He traveled everywhere with his best friend.

R: He would suddenly appear anywhere in the world, with his outrageous clothes and personality!

M: On his back he carried a huge bag, it was actually a wardrobe.

L: ... •sigh• exactly..

L: People called him crazy, honestly, he was a very strange person-

R: But with a great heart!

E: He genuinely scared everyone, he was so spontaneous...

Y/N: So why is he so famous? Why did they go after him?

R: Because... it was magical being with him.

L: It was impossible to ignore him... Their hats were like something out of a children's story... out of the ordinary.

L: As if he lived in his own world, he invented whatever he imagined; anything was possible.

R: You couldn't have predicted what he would pull out of his closet... But it was so funny the random things he pulled out!

L: For him, the most majestic thing was to make a hat that matched his dreams.

L: It was the meaning of his life, smiling with the others around him.

L: If you were to find him, you would be certain that you would enter his world.

E: But he also made the most elegant things! I heard that several princesses had hats and tiaras made by him! The most delicate jewels that ever existed!

M: Even though he lacked the ability to charge for them, he was poorer than a frog without a pond.

Y/N: Oh, you got to meet him, Marky?

M: H-hm?! Something like that... I mean, I had an institution for travelers...

R: I remember the first time I met him! He came just in time for my birthday! Dad bought so many hats, both for me and for my future siblings!

E: Wait a minute, what?! You had not just one, but several of his hats?!

M: I had one of his hats too, before I met you, Eleanor, I traveled with it for a while... it was the only thing that could control me back then.

Y/N: Why are his hats so rare? What happened?

•Eleanor, Marky, and Robson exchange glances•

R: He disappeared, like an ancient, childish story.

E: For hundreds of years, nobody knows what happened.. And if it happened.

M: Their hats wore out and were lost over time, just like him; I believe he died.

Y/N: So that's it...?

L: No. Actually, there's much more to this story...

Y/N: Oh!

L: But I'll tell it another day, I have to get back to work and enjoy the afternoon, one of the new residents asked me for a work desk.

T: ...Just a children's story... Totally imagined..

I hope you enjoyed it, I don't know if I wrote it right... I don't know if it's a good read or if you enjoyed reading it...

I was going to do more drawings, but I'm not very good at arranging them in comics... and I didn't want to have to make two posts.

But it was one of the most fun scenes I've ever drawn.
