The History and Symbolism of Birthstones
Every month is said to have a birthstone or perfect gem that may bring good luck and health. They were associated with zodiac signs and go very far back in time. According to the historian Flavius Josephus, the idea traces back to the Book of Exodus in which the twelve constituents of his breastplate gave the identity for the tribes of Israel, and from then on, these stones became linked with the months of birth and zodiac signs.
