lucifur’s first adventure in the yard today 😊
Announcement
I’m going to do some revamps to my snake section of the blog (and other sections) pretty soon because I had way too many ball pythons and decided not to breed them except for maybe Kalahari and my lucy depending on how the market goes and maaaybe get Serengeti a female but probably not at this point because coral glows have gone down so much in just a year--anyway I made the decision to rehome even some that were pet only because the amount of BP’s I had was just ridiculous and cleaning day was time consuming and most of them weren’t getting held and were just pretty pet rocks in drawers so I decided it would be better for all of them if I let a lot go to new homes
Scirocco, Karmann, the fire pair and my mystery girl (who is eating steadily now) and some others I never posted on here went to a young woman with lots of funding and lots of time on her hands. She holds them and posts lots of pictures of them on Facebook. Iris and her butter boyfriend went to a guy who wants to do a lucy breeding project with his dad and I got cash, an adult female cobalt tarantula (my first tarantula!!) and a young female blood python for them.
I kept Sahara, Serengeti, Kalahari, Mona, my baby BEL, and my albino.
However--the day Sahara was brought up (it’s an hour and a half drive from my old place) I opened up her bin and saw a really fresh pee so I went to pull her out and realized she’d passed. Yes, she was off feed for about a month, but considering she did the same thing last year, I wasn’t worried because she’s just not a good eater during fall/winter. She was a little underweight, but there is no way it was lack of food that killed her. She was moved in her regular bin with her hide and her dish and the car was kept warm. Since she was 9 years old, my only conjecture is that she could have been power fed or taken care of badly by the original owner. I was completely blindsided by her death. Everyone I have talked to assured me it wasn’t anything I did and that I took good care of her. I am considering getting a necropsy done just on her liver so that the incision will be small because I want to preserve her with my first ball, Scooter, who is still sitting in a freezer that I thankfully delayed burying or anything for almost a year. I’m just glad I got almost a year with her. She was a good girl, she always came on walks with me and liked to sit on the couch and watch TV, and still the best model out of all my snakes who would always pose for the camera. I remember the first time I saw her beautiful eyes and I fell in love with her and I didn’t stop talking about her until I finally got to bring her home a month or so later (when I met her, she was doing her yearly hunger strike) and I was so happy even though she wasn’t some fancy morph or even a very high quality example of pastel. I will hold on to that feeling.
Some Snake Weights
(Rounded up a tad because I like 0s and 5s and don’t need to be 100% exact on these. All are in grams)
1. Scirocco - 200
2. Karmann - 250
I was super surprised by these two and I’m guessing they are younger than I was told or since they were/are eating mice mostly they’re small for their age
3. Kalahari - 115
I’m switching her to 100% rats and not mice because her body condition is awesome and always has been but she’s way too small for her age and I thought she was like double that??
4. Serengeti - 550
5. Lucy boy - 100
boy u huge
6. Mystery girl - 50
7. Iris - 1100
8. Butter boy - 1000
Used a diff container to weigh him in case anyone is worried about contamination/quarantine break
9. Rescue corn - 400
Probably gonna up his feeding because I’m not seeing much change in his body condition lately
10. Valentino - 300
11. Virgil - 125
Bonus:
12. Bubbles, a fucking giant mildly obese corn I just picked up from a lady who did my hair a couple months ago and casually mentioned that she might be rehoming her snake and took my number - 900
After a super successful, easy assist/force feed last week... my mystery girl wouldn’t take a live pinkie this week even though I left it in with her (a pinkie isn’t going to hurt the snake) so I had to try and assist/force feed again and she spit it out a couple times and was obviously extremely stressed out so I gave up. Idk what is wrong with this snake (it’s not a physical issue that I can see or my husbandry, she has a nicer tub than what she had at the breeder’s place) but she is the worst eater I’ve ever encountered and I might return her to the breeder because he has more experience with babies that won’t eat than I do and has gotten all her siblings feeding on their own even though they were difficult too.
On the bright side everybody else is eating fine, Sahara is the only one who refused feed but she’s not that consistent/voracious of an eater (she has gone on strikes before) so I’m not super concerned or surprised. Serengeti took his third feed in a row so I think his 3-4 month strike is over finally, though he still only has an interest in live. My lucy and Kalahari are awesome, instant eaters as always.
Oh ball pythons, why must you be such picky snakes? It’s to the point where I relish feeding the other snakes because all the others (retics, corns, carpet, boa, ect) take feed instantly every single time (except for Beatrix she an overgrown ball) and it’s not the “will you eat today” roulette.
My baby lucy boy is one month old today! He has taken two meals so far, and has yet to refuse one, and has already made the switch to frozen. I am so proud of his progress.
My lucy boy is officially just as ravenous as Kalahari. He took a small frozen as a chain feed after his first (live) meal last week and today he took a lone frozen without any hesitation. So glad he’s not going to be a picky eater. He’s already gained a few grams (I weighed him before eating/after he pooped) too.
My BEL baby took his first feed no problem and after some coercion, Serengeti FINALLY took a meal after months on end of refusing food. I am so proud of my sons
I'm feeding my lucy boy and mystery girl for the first time. I hope it'll go well. I set up their bins with nice hides and fake plants for cover so hopefully they'll feel secure enough to eat. It'll be my lucy's first meal ever (for reference, breeders aren't supposed to sell hatchlings until they've had their first feed but the breeder is two hours away and knows I know what I'm doing and I need the practice for when I hatch my own babies in the future anyway)I'm doing live r.at pups and then next feed I'll see if they'll take frozen. Babies are pretty easy to switch so it shouldn't be too hard.
