overlooked is your new favourite sustainable fashion channel
Do you struggle with finding ethical clothes you actually like? Because I do. Ethical brands are expensive and too boring for my colourful closet. It's hard to find things you actually like in thrift stores. Social media groups and youtube videos stress you out because it's hard to aspire to perfection.
Expressing myself through clothes is such a big part of my personality and I really struggle with the idea of giving that up. At the same time, the planet is dying and real humans are suffering. So. What do we do?
We are overlooked, a three-person task group intending to figure that out. There is me, Laura, with my colourful streetwear style. Janika, the soft pastel romanticist, and Ellie, the resident DIYer with a punky side. As much as we tip our hats to every minimalist who does know what they are doing, that is not us. We are here to figure it out step by step to get closer to our perfect, sustainable wardrobes.
So if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
Staring into your closet stressed
Leaving thrift stores empty-handed and frustrated
Terrified of buying a 150-dollar pair of jeans online without trying them on only because they are sustainable
Incapable of threading a needle
struggling to understand what counts as sustainable anyway
in need of some serious inspiration

Okay, this is wildly off-brand for a Harry Potter blog. But I’ve developed a passion for slow fashion this year, and with both Black Friday and Christmas fast approaching, I wanted to suggest a place to put your money that’s less of an ethical dumpster fire than commonly-known fast fashion brands. ‘Cause I hate fast fashion but I love funky comfy sustainable dungarees. :-)
(Here’s a comprehensive overview of all of fast fashion’s suckiness.)
I realise quitting fast fashion isn’t accessible to everyone, but if it is to you, I strongly urge you to switch to buying secondhand or buying from ethical, sustainable businesses instead. Like Lucy&Yak, a little UK-based brand I adore because their clothes aim mostly to be a) super fuckin’ funky and b) comfortable as hell. Plus all their clothes are handmade, don’t use animal products, and other cool things, and they’re still striving to improve and do better. :-)
(Also, their customer support is amazing. They’re super kind and quick to respond.)
(Here’s their good on you rating.)
They donated 10% of last year’s Black Friday sales to a charity called Fior di Loto (The Lotus Flower Foundation) which sends girls to school. So, if you were gonna splurge on some nice things and the nice things happen to include, say, a sick pair of dungarees ... I recommend the pink ones. :-)
I also really really really recommend the iconic Rainbow trousers. Really. (I get compliments on them literally every time I wear them.)
That’s it. Fast fashion can suck my dick. Enjoy your dungarees, kids.
