SS2015 SEATED DESIGN
Lucy Jones: Originally from Wales, Jones moved to New York to study fashion design at Parsons School of Design at The New School. Lucy Jones is a designer with a focus on solution-based design. It is her mission to marry style and function with the intent of addressing a larger portion of society often overlooked in the fashion design process. Seated Design is the method of analyzing our existing design infrastructure and encouraging implementation of functional, attractive and more comfortable design solutions for seated individuals. In fashion design, we traditionally use the “standing body.” We can eyeball a “good” neckline, a suitable length for a sleeve and so on. However, if we begin with the seated body, many of these measurements and our assumptions of garment construction become disrupted due to the anatomical variations and variety of disabilities. I hope that my approach to Seated Design will create a conversation within fashion that is far overdue. It is up to designers to better the fit, practicality and comfort of our garments, and it is vital that we see the value of involving disability into all aspects of design. To that end, designers should share, design, develop and listen to the needs of all individuals.
Lucy Jones: Most recently, Jones was commissioned to prototype a pair of “Seated Pantyhose” for MoMA’s second fashion exhibition entitled “Items: Is Fashion Modern?” Jones was also commissioned to produce site-specific work by curators Dr. Hazel Clark and Ilari Laamen for the Museum of Art and Design(MAD) exhibition “fashion after Fashion. In September 2016 Jones was one of very few invited for a “Design for All” conference at the White House.
