Lughnasadah, Mabon, and Samhain: The Three Harvests

Of the three harvests Lughnasadah or Lammas is first and it focuses on the hard work of harvest. It is the grain harvest. Unlike fruit, grain is not instantly food after picking it. There is much more work to be done. Lugh is about the labor we must give in order to harvest. It is for this reason many pagans chose to honor the sacrifice of  the grain by fasting.

Mabon is second and it focuses on the gratitude we give to the land and fruits. It is the fruit and vegetable harvest. The bounty of the Earth is on full display and we celebrate the last of the light before the dark half of the year. The fast of Lugh comes to an end. This is the reasons many witches feast on Mabon eve. 

Samhain is the last of the three harvests and it focuses on the finality of harvest. It is traditionally the time when animals are slaughtered. The forage will run out soon and the nights are cool enough to keep the meat from spoiling. It is a time to take stock of what to keep and what to let die. It is a time to remember the dead.
