To Luis Echeverría
Mexico City, 22 February 1975
Mr President, I thank you most sincerely for your letter of congratulations on my 75th birthday (a door thrown wide open, almost, to the Abyss), for your words of encouragement, for your generosity when speaking of my work and, most of all, for your humanity. I am utterly sceptical about the immediate future for human society and have taken refuge for a long time now in my last bastion, the cult of friendship, and your letter reflects that sentiment I so much appreciate.
I am also proud that you associate my name, although my contribution has been infinitesimal, to the survival of Mexican culture ‘that is now’ – in your words – ‘determined to build a society that that not only respects, but also encourages and nourishes thought and deeds’
It only remains for me humbly to ask, Mr President, that you accept my faithful and steadfast friendship,

From Luis Echeverría
Los Pinos, 22 February 1975
Very esteemed maestro, I did not want to let the day on which you celebrate 75 years of fecund life go by without sending my warm best wishes.
I do so with admiration and respect for a man who has, like every true artist, left behind him a bountiful harvest to enrich and ennoble his peers. This is particularly true in your case, as your aesthetic sensibility has invariably accompanied, one could even say has been committed to, a clear and critical examination of society. In this way, your service to freedom and the realm of human possibilities has repaid society many times over for all that it has inspired and evoked in you.
It is years now since you chose to live in Mexico and to exercise your citizenship to the full. Here, you have doubtless found inspiration and detail for the creation of many of your films.
Our country, which has waged a long struggle for sovereignty as a nation, as well as for its cultural survival, and that is now determined to build a society that not only respects, but also encourages and nourishes free thought and deeds, will always value, in every way, the vital source of inspiration and reflection that is your work.
I wish you, with great affection, many more years of service to your contemporaries and your countrymen.
