On September 17, two LAPD officers responded to a home in the southern part of the city after receiving a report of a domestic assault in progress. New video shows the moment officers arrived at the home and were met by 19-year-old Luis Herrera, who was brandishing what appeared to be a black rifle. The officers ran for cover, drew their weapons and demanded that Herrera drop the gun. After shouldering the weapon, the officers opened fire on Herrera, fatally wounding him after hitting him six times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A subsequent investigation found that the black rifle was an Airsoft non-lethal toy gun. A subsequent investigation has uncovered that there was no evidence of domestic violence between Herrera’s parents, contrary to what the 19-year-old had said on the 911 calls. The officer who fired the shots that killed Herrera has been identified as Luis Navarrete. He has been placed on administrative leave. LAPD’s Force Investigation Division is looking into the fatal shooting.
