Shadow Beast was amazingly good but boringly heterosexual; would recommend re-imagining the leads as either Catherine as ‘Callum’ or Thomas as ‘Tori’
Would also recommend it to people into cryptozoology, zoology, British wildlife + Nature, Mysteries, Horrors, Paleontology, etc
The climax of Shadow Beast was intense as shit but a little disappointing and a lil’ sexist tbh (spoilers under the cut)
This girl Catherine gets tricked by a head-of corporation man to go with him and find this huge saber-toothed cat/jaguar hybrid that’s been terrorizing Rural Scotland and intends to use her as bait. He isn’t described as particularly strong and granted he does have a gun, but there are several moments she easily could have taken it or knocked him out with a punch or something.
Greasy old dude eventually gets taken out by the cat though and Catherine has to run and hide before it gets her too, but she accidentally finds herself in it’s cave and gets trapped in there with it.
Meanwhile big cool hunter guy Thomas got tricked by the corporation dude to be somewhere far away, but he figures it out and finds where the cat had killed old guy. He’s got a gun and a spear and manages to track the cat and Catherine to the cave.
The cat is distracted from the girl and goes for him instead ofc, and he can’t use his gun at such sudden close range, so he fights and eventually kills it with a spear and rescues the damsel in distress etc etc
..I was fully expecting Catherine to sneak down from the rocks while the fight was going on, and just as the cat is about to kill Thomas, find the gun and blast that fucker to pieces.
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product
Overall the filming of “Swell” the opening was a success - despite chopping and changing footage to give our audience a good understanding of what to expect from the film in only two minutes we have finally ended up with an edit we are pleased with. Finding the right day that offered good filming conditions (e.g slow wind, rain free and optimum light availability) Plus good surfing conditions (e.g 5ft+ waves that come in clean sets to avoid unnecessary danger to our surfing actor) was a big challenge within itself. However we managed to find a day with only minor wind issue’s - this still posed some threat to our filming equipment (whipped up sand) but our neat preparation meant the beach scene’s were filmed and completed within the day. From the preliminary with have learnt to use Adobe premier pro in a lot more detail as we discovered that the transitions from each scene were important to ensure our opening ran smoothly. We also learnt to work more as a team, due to our preliminary being a much shorter/easy task and our final opening taking more work we found that if we worked efficiently together our work will be to a better standard.
Overall our knowledge about software has improved throughout this project. We have learnt new techniques and skills that have helped us to a create a professional looking film opening
Filming Equipment
Throughout the preparation for filming we spent time looking for ways in which we would be able to get close up quality footage of our surfers in the water incase shots of this type would be needed. This gave us a few options; hiring a helicopter was an obvious impracticality but water proof camera's however, were not - our specific model was a Sony splash proof 4K handy cam (although none of this footage was edited into our final film opening due to time constraints the practice and experience it has given us is invaluable).
Filming Process
Throughout the filming process we faced many inconvenience’s - this was mainly down to our focus being surfing and the beach as both are dependent on the weather. Our first major dilemma was the English ‘swell’ although there is some great surfing to be had along the south-west coast it is rarely accompanied by sun or blue skies. This meant a lot of preparation for deciding which day to film. To predict the swell we used The MagicSeaWeed surf report. We knew this was a reliable source as members of our group surf and have used this predictor in the past.
Film Research
Big Wednesday
The Big Wednesday relates to our own film in the sense of surfing being an escape. This links to our ‘escapist’ genre but also to it being a way out in the lives of those who have a monotonous time. It follows 3 male’s from late teens into their adult lives showing how they struggle to cope with the world and obstacle’s in their path as well as the responsibilities they face as adults.
Titles - the titles are displayed nicely over clean sets of enormous waves. The font is simplistic and clear connoting the surfers way of life, the letters are block giving off the sense that everything is how it appears with no complications.
Music - The sound of breaking waves before the music fades in sets the scene nicely preparing us for a seaside scenario. It is up beat yet relaxed implying a happy care free mood.
Camera Work - The footage in the opening shows amazing beaches and some impressive swell. The off shore panning gives a great view.
Finding Actors
We are currently in the process of still trying to find suitable actors to star in our production. We have recently posted on Facebook and on Casting Call Pro.
Notes about comedy genre
Up beat music linking to the party theme which emphasises fun. Adults acting like children illustrating the comedy aspect of the film.
