Anniversary: Luke
You glance over at the clock on the wall one last time, before blowing out the candles. Luke was late, extremely late. It was your anniversary, and your husband was nowhere to be found, he hadn't even texted you to tell you that he was going to be late. You put the dinner away before walking upstairs to bed.
A Few Hours Later
It's four in the morning when you hear it, the key in the door. The next thing you hear is your husband of now five years, stumbling his way up the stairs drunk off his ass. He stumbles through your bedroom door and you listen to him fall to the floor as he tries to take off his shoes. Clicking on the lamp that is sitting on the bedside table, you sit up.
"Luke?"
"Shit! Hey, love...what are you still doing up? I thought you would be asleep by now."
"I was, but my husband stumbling through the door at four in the morning woke me up."
"Hey, I'm only half...half drunk."
"Half? You must be joking, you can't even walk a straight line. How many drinks did you have tonight, Luke?"
"I only had a couple. What are you getting so upset for?"
You sigh before helping him sit on the edge of the bed and take his shoes off.
"I asked you to do one thing for me, Luke. One thing. I don't think I ask for a lot, but this...this was the one thing I wanted. All I wanted was for you to be home for dinner tonight, that was it. Just have dinner with me. Instead, you decided to blow me off and go get plastered with your friends."
You walk to his dresser and grab him a pair of pajama pants and a fresh shirt.
"It was just dinner. We have dinner every night," he mumbles.
"We don't. We have dinner together whenever you have the time and haven't forgotten about me."
"You're getting upset over nothing, it was just dinner."
You stand there in disbelief, he doesn't even remember what today is.
"You don't remember what today is, do you?"
Luke looks up at you before taking a deep breath.
"What?"
"Today, Luke? What is special about today?" you ask.
He's silent for a moment before he shrugs, "I don't know...it's free waffle day or something?"
You throw the shirt and pants at his head, "you are un-freaking-believable. You don't even remember what today is?"
"Am I supposed to?" he asks.
"It's our anniversary, jackass! We've been married for five years today!"
"Whoa."
"Whoa? All you have to say is whoa?"
"Well, what do you...what do you want me to say?"
"I don't know, Luke. How about I love you? Or I'm sorry for forgetting our anniversary? Or I'm sorry I missed dinner? Or I'm make it up to you or anything of that nature," you say.
"Okay, I love you and I'll make it up to you. But I think you're overacting, it's one day. It's not the end of the world." "I'm overreacting? I'm over...you know what, Luke? I was here all night waiting for you to come home so we could celebrate. I cooked your favorite meal, I set up a romantic setting, I even bought that stupid guitar you've been going on and on about for months. I did all this and you couldn't even be bothered to show up. You couldn't even be bothered to shoot me at text telling me that you weren't coming. Yes, it's one day. But it is the one day where we promised to spend the rest of our lives together for better or worse. Instead, it's the one day that you come home drunk off your ass and not caring that your wife has been your wife for five fucking years."
"That's not what I said. I said that it's not the end of the world. I don't understand why you're making such a big deal out of this. So, I forgot our anniversary. It happens, I'm human...I'm allowed to make mistakes. It's one night. One night where I get to forget work and just let go and you're acting like I just killed your puppy or something. I'm allowed to go out with the guys and have fun."
"I'm not saying that you're not, Luke. I'm saying that this was the one night where I specifically asked you to not. I asked you to be home for dinner and you promised me that you wouldn't miss it, remember?"
"I made a mistake! I forgot about your stupid dinner, my bad. But it's not like you have never made a mistake before. If I remember correctly our five year marriage started with the two of us making mistake."
"I cannot believe you're even bringing that up. It's been five years."
"Well, why not? Since we're talking about mistakes, why not talk about our biggest? After all, he's all over the news now right? He's a big superstar, a constant reminder of what we did, what you did."
"You are seriously throwing that in my face? I'm not the one that pursued the girl with a fiancee and then lied to my best friend, who happens to be her brother about sleeping with said girl."
"You are the one that didn't say no though. You were engaged to someone else and you still slept with me, what's that say about you? For all I know, you could be doing it again. You know what they say...once a cheater, always a cheater."
You're silent and it's like Luke knows he has crossed a line. Yes, what the two of you did was messed up but you would never do that to Luke.
"Get out."
"What?"
"Get out, Luke. I want you out."
"Babe..." "It's been five years. Five years and you're still holding that over my head. He doesn't even hold it over my head anymore. I know I cheated; I know what I did was fucked up; I know I broke his heart. But I also know that I didn't love him and that you weren't complaining when I chose you over him. I know that I would never cheat on you, nor have I ever. The fact that you could even think that, let alone accuse me of it...just get out."
"Where am I supposed to go at four in the morning?" he asks.
"I don't know and I don't care. I just want you out," you say.
"Fine, I don't need this," Luke says.
He grabs his jacket and shoes before walking out the door as you crumble to the floor, finally letting the tears fall...
