We talk a lot about Ilya being the one to give Shane ginger ale (and without judgement) but can I talk about the end of episode one for a second?
Scott Hunter saying “that better be ginger ale, rook” and then offering shots anyway. Both decide to partake in what everyone else is doing. Shane leaves to find Ilya—someone who hasn’t chosen ginger ale or shots… he has chosen a cigarette and his own sorrow. Shots and Cigarettes. Society and Sorrow. The things they choose instead of each other.
Then Ilya cuts down on smoking and Shane stops drinking. Then Scott “better be ginger ale” Hunter is the influence that allows Shane and Ilya to accept that there is a future for them.
