Cool thing re: brutal rogue one plot/character introductions --- I think Gareth Edwards had to sacrifice what would have normally been a heist movie in order to jam it into canon. Normally in heist movies there's a montage or so of the heist team's backgrounds and skill sets (the Italian Job, Ocean's Eleven, etc) which makes you kinda like the characters more. But the 'montage' for R1 heist team was wayyy overshadowed by plot. But it's hard to criticize a SW film out of the context of SW. Much❤!

I’m really not sure about the director’s original intentions – Edwards himself claims that he always intended the film to be dark and for all the major characters to die, which doesn’t really jive with ‘heist movie’, but there was also a lot of editing and reshooting going on mid-production. You can see evidence of that when you compare the original trailer with the final film; also, the final film has some parts that seem like weird asides (e.g. the bits with Saw), because presumably they had a much bigger part in the original vision and are now just dangling there like a vestigial limb. 

So… I don’t know that Edwards has ever copped to this, but I think his original version was going to be much more upbeat (possibly heisty) and became much grimmer (more war movie), probably as a comment on the current political mood of our own world. The result of trying to change horses midstream is that the film is kind of jerky and uneven and can’t really decide what genre it’s trying to be, hence the problem with how to introduce the two main characters and make the audience root for them.

I’m now coming off as very harsh on Rogue One – I like lots of things about it! All the secondary characters (K2, Chirrut, Baze, Bodhi) are immediately engaging and absolutely tug my heartstrings, and Krennic is a great villain. 

(Still meh about Jyn and Cassian, though.)

Soft thought: by some strange Star Wars miracle, on certain planets, Hux' hair glows a crazy violet color due to the sun type and composition of the atmosphere. Kylo watches him and hides his smiles, and feels the amusement from the stormtroopers around them in the party. Hux doesn't know. Kylo likes that he doesn't know, and it's one of his only secrets he keeps.
