You’d just walked into the Hard Deck when you spotted Natasha and the rest of the Dagger Squad. It’s was unusually louder than any other night, probably because it was the Friday after payday.
You and your sneaky link, Hangman, had had a fight earlier in the day and the thought of seeing him here made your blood boil.
As you approach Natasha and Bradley, you offer them tight-lipped smiles. “Hey.”
“Hey to you too,” Bradley snickers knowingly. “What’s up your ass?”
“Why do you ask?” You counter, grabbing his beer and taking a sip.
“Because of the scowl you had as you walked in,” Natasha butts in.
You sigh, rubbing your temple. “I’ll need a beer if I’m gonna tell you why I’m pissy.”
“Let me guess, what happened with Seresin this morning?” Bradley asks, smirking down at you.
You glare at him, nostrils flaring at the mention of Jake.
Bradley raises his hands in surrender, chuckling before beginning to walk away. “I’ll get another round.”
When he’s finally gone, you lean into Natasha, placing your head on her shoulder with a groan. “Jake was such an asshole this morning.”
“What’d he do this time?” She asks, placing her head on yours.
Earlier that morning
“Hey, Raven,” Jake called out.
You’d been walking toward the hangar for today’s class when you heard his voice behind you. Checking your watch, you frowned but turned to face him.
He’d been leaning on the wall a few doors down, Coyote beside him. His cat-like grin was plastered on his lips, his emerald eyes were raking up and down your body like you were the last piece of meat and he was a hungry animal.
“What?” You asked, keeping the charade of hating him for the sake of y’all’s game.
It’d been a few months since this…thing had started between the two of you. It wasn’t supposed to last this long, you’d told yourself. Y’all’s rules were clear.
1. Don’t make it obvious.
2. Act like you hate one another.
And 3. Don’t fall in-love.
Only, you’d failed rule number three. But he didn’t need to know that.
“Mind if you meet me in here real quick?” He asked, a brow lifting in question.
You glanced at Coyote, who only shrugged . He’d been the only one (other than Natasha and Bradley) to know about you and Jake.
With a shrug, you followed Jake into the closet he was standing beside. As soon as you entered, he was on you. His lips were on your neck, his large hands on your hips and pulling you into his body.
“Fuck, I missed you,” he whispered into the kiss.
“I’m sure you did, cowboy,” you chuckled.
He pulled away from you, grinning before pecking your lips again. “When are you gonna let me take you on a real date?”
“When are you gonna beat me in a flight practice?” You smirked.
“Now, Raven,” he started, leaning close. “We both now I’m the best pilot in our class.”
You scoffed. “Please, we all know that’s Phoenix.”
He only smirked at you. “I guess we’ll see today.”
~*~*~
“Pull up!” You screamed into your microphone. “Hangman, PULL UP!”
“No!” He yelled. “Not until you grow some balls and do it first!”
The two do you had been nose diving, your jets almost touching as you dropped. A fight had started, all because Bradley made a comment about how pretty you looked today. (Something you and Bradley knew would’ve set Jake off. And boy did it work.)
“Both of you pull up!” Maverick screamed in your ear. “Stop flirting and pull up you fuckers!”
You had let out an exasperated scream, pulling the throttle up and flying away from the spiral you and Jake had been about to start. Only, Jake didn’t follow.
“Seresin!” Maverick scolded, panic in his tone. “What are you doing?”
“Proving a point,” Jake simply said.
“Pull up!” You felt yourself screaming.
You didn’t even know why you were. Maybe it’s the knowledge that he was being reckless for you. Maybe it was knowing he could be dead in a matter of seconds.
Either way, Jake needed to pull up—for his sake and your sanity.
“Not until you say yes.”
“Say yes to what?” You panicked.
“Say yes to going out on a date with me.”
If you weren’t flying an expensive piece of military grade equipment, you would’ve crashed into a mountain.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” You heard Bradley say in your ears. “Is he for real?”
“You’d die to hear her say yes?” Maverick asked.
“Yes,” Jake laughed. Laughed.
“Pull up, dammit!” You screamed.
“Answer me,” Jake said calmly.
“Please, we’ll talk about it on the ground,” you started. “You need to pull up.”
“Not until—”
“JAKE! PULL THE FUCK UP, NOW!”
The panic and use of his first name pulled him out of his free fall. Jake’s jet pulled up, speeding its way up and next to you and Maverick. You glanced his way, narrowing your eyes at him when he winks and salutes you.
“Both of you,” Maverick started. “Get on the ground, now.”
Once on the ground, you pushed yourself out of the jet, snatching your helmet off of your head.
Angry wasn’t even the word you would’ve used at that moment.
You were livid. You wanted to rip Jake’s stupid head off his stupidly hot body. The very same one you knew inside and out. The one you knew had a little scar on his stomach from where he had his appendix removed. The one that you’d touched, fucked, and kissed.
As you stomped into the hangar, you heard Jake’s footsteps behind you, followed by Maverick’s.
“Raven, Hangman!” Maverick yelled. The two of you standing at attention. When he reached you both, Maverick’s eyes were red with anger. “Get your asses on the ground! I want you both to do push-ups until you’re throwing up. I want you two so tired tomorrow, you won’t want to get out of bed. Am I understood?”
“Yes, sir!” You both said.
As you both did pushups, Jake tried to talk to you, to apologize. But you ignored him, focusing on the pain in your shoulders. When Maverick finally allowed you both to get up and leave, you were still burning with anger.
The walk more like jog to the locker rooms was filled with Jake’s incessant voice.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N,” he’d said.
“Please forgive me,” he’d begged.
Reaching the locker room door, you whirled his way and showed him a fraction of the anger in your body. At the look of genuine surprise he flashed your way, you squinted at him.
“We. Are. Done.” You gritted through clenched teeth. “Whatever we had, is gone.”
“C’mon, you don’t mean that.”
“Oh, I do.” You spat. “That stunt you pulled was out of line, Jake. You could’ve died. WE could’ve died.”
“Ah, but we didn’t.” The stupid grin he flashed at you made you want to punch him in those perfect teeth of his.
“Fuck off,” you told him, entering the locker room and slamming the door behind.
Now
“Holy shit,” Natasha says. “I didn’t know that happened today. Mav had Bob and me go to the infirmary after our little free fall-eject incident this morning.”
“It was bad,” Bradley confirms. “I’ve never seen Maverick so angry.”
“Imagine how I felt!” You tell them. You groan, rubbing your temple and looking to where Jake stands next to Coyote, Bob, and Fanboy. “And now he’s acting like nothing happened.”
“Well, you did tell him to ‘fuck off’,” Bradley points out.
“Go stand in the corner,” you and Natasha order.
Reluctantly, Bradley walks away and to the corner Natasha pushes him toward. Once he’s standing like a child in corner, you turn to Natasha, tears welling up in your eyes. “I know I told him to fuck off, I just didn’t expect him to actually do it.”
“I’m surprised he did in the first place,” Natasha seethes. “He’s usually up your ass, even after he fucks up.”
“I can’t believe he did all of that just to her ask me out on a date,” you incredulously add. “He’s such a fucking—”
“Can I talk to you?” You hear Jake’s voice behind you.
Spinning around, you blink away the tears you were holding and scowl up at him. Tonight, he’s wearing a tight black shirt and jeans, cowboy boots on his feet. His hair looks a bit disheveled, his usual perfectly styled hair completely gone.
“About what?” You grunt.
“About this morning.” When you don’t reply, he adds, “Let’s go somewhere private, okay? I need to talk to you.”
You cross your arms over your chest, frowning and looking him up and down.
“Please.”
Behind you, Natasha and Bradley gasp. Jake never begs or apologizes or uses any sort of manners. Ever. For him to be begging you to go talk to him…
“Fine,” you finally breathe. “Take me home then.” You turn to Natasha and hug your friend, whispering, “If you don’t hear from me tomorrow morning, I might be in jail.”
She snickers, but hugs you tightly. “Have fun.”
You join Jake’s side, tugging your arm away when he tries to hold your hand. “Don’t touch me.”
~*~*~*~
Jake drives in silence, the agony of your annoyed expression mixed with your radiating anger, has him wanting to curl up in a ball and die.
He’ll be the first person to admit that what he did this morning was a dick move to make. He knew it was reckless. And he knew you were upset.
And for that he’ll forever want to kick himself in the nuts.
As he pulls into your driveway, he lets out a low sigh, turning to face you. You’re looking out the window, hands clenched in your lap. The little sundress you wore was stunning on you, the curves of your body on display. Jake wanted to touch you, to pull you into is lap and kiss away your anger. But he knew if he touched you, you’d probably punch him. So he stayed away.
You’ve been stoic the entire car ride to your house. He’s seen you angry before, but this time, it feels different. It feels…real.
“Y/N,” he starts.
“Not in the car,” you croak. Your voice sound like you’d been crying the entire ride.
I’m a fucking dick, Jake thought.
Without another word, you push his truck door open, not allowing him to open it like he normally would. He watches as you swipe at your eyes, your hair covering his view of your face.
Fuck, he messed up. And he messed up badly.
Following you up the walkway, he watches as you unlock your front door before following you into the house.
The house is quiet and dark upon entering. The apple and cinnamon air freshener sends a welcoming jolt of fragrance to his nose, causing him to smile at the familiarity.
You remove your shoes (Jake following suit) and wave for him to follow you with the wag of your finger.
He follows with a pit in his stomach. Fear? Anxiety? Both? He didn’t know what it was, what he did know was that you were leading him to your room.
You enter your room, taking your earrings out and placing them on a dish on top of your dresser. Jake watches from the doorway in silence, waiting for you okay to enter. He watches as your hands brush back your hair and your chest rise and fall as you sigh.
“Where do you wanna start?” You ask, turning to face him.
Your eyes are heavy, a bit red from the tears he now knew you shed in the car.
“I wanna start by apologizing,” he says, crossing the threshold and walking right up to you. He takes your hands, you yank them back. “Y/N, I’m so so sorry.”
“Sorry isn’t good enough, Jake.” Your voice is shaky, like it was taking everything in you not to let go and cry.
Only, a year does escape. It’s quick, but slow enough that Jake notices and almost wipes it away were it not for your hand beating his to it. You inhale a shuddering breath, looking away, unable to look at him.
Jake only watches you, unable to think of anything to say. That is, until you whisper, “You could’ve died today.”
“I know.”
“You could’ve died.” This time you emphasize the word. You want him to know the gravity of his actions.
“I know.” Jake’s voice starts to quiver, his throat tying up in knots and eyes pricking with tears.
“You’re such an asshole sometimes,” you say, love louder.
“I know.”
“Why couldn’t you just ask me out on a date on land?” Your voice keeps rising, and you’re half scared it’ll end with Jake leaving. You both know he’d rather not argue. “Why did you have to make it such a huge deal?”
“I wanted you to know that I meant it.”
At that, you look up at him. Your eyes are blazing in anger. “Are you kidding me? You of all people know that grand gestures like that, especially that, will never work on me.”
“I wanted everyone to know that I wanted you for myself,” he sheepishly replies.
You shake your head, turning away from him. He grabs your wrist, pulling you to face him again.
“You know I’ve been wanting to make it official. I needed everyone to know how I feel about you.”
“And so you risked not only your life, but mine, prove this point?” You raise a brow, eyes hard.
“Fuck,” he lets go of you, running his hand through his hair. “I just wanted you and everyone to know that I’m serious. I never wanted to put you in danger.”
He steps closer to you, eyes soft and greener than you e seen them before. “Please, let me back in. Let me make it up to you.”
“You want to make it up to me?” You ask, eyes gleaming in amusement.
Jake has never been more scared in his life, but he nods, waiting for you to tell him what he needs to do to make it up to you.
“I want you on your knees.”
Jake almost thought he didn’t hear you correctly. That is, until he looked into your eyes. You were dead serious.
Keeping his eyes on yours, he smirks a bit, before slowly kneeling onto the carpeted floor. His head tilts up to see you, your eyes beginning to shine in playfulness.
He knows exactly what you want.
“Now, beg.”
That was not what he was thinking at all. He almost does a double take, but at the way you smirk and cross your arms over your chest, he knows you’re testing him. You want to see if he’ll do it.
Jake lays his ego and pride aside, scooting closer to you and softly bringing his hands to your thighs.
“Nuh uh,” you scold. “No touching. Just beg.”
His hands fall to his sides, his heart racing at whatever hand you’re playing.
Whatever this is, he likes it.
“Y/N,” he sweetly and as genuinely as possible, says. “Will you please forgive me? I’ll do anything and everything you ask me to do. Just…”
He takes a deep breath, not realizing that he’s truly speaking from his heart and not his dick. He feels tears welling in his eyes and he quickly blinks them away.
But you noticed.
You saw the way his green eyes watered and the thumping of his heartbeat on the side of his neck. You always notice things about Jake. You couldn’t help it, Jake has a way of pulling and hypnotizing you.
“Please don’t shut me out,” Jake finally finishes. “I can’t go another day without you. I,” he takes a shuddering breath, “I need you to breathe. I need you to think.”
Jake’s eyes are pleading, like a man who wants to give you the world.
“I know we started this agreement with just sex,” he continues. “But I fell for you. And hard. I can’t stop thinking about you. I can’t go to sleep at night without wondering if you’re doing the same thing too. And it’s terrifying.”
“Jake—”
“I know you don’t feel the same way, but I want to make this, us, something more than just physical attraction.” He smiles, shaking his head. “You know I’m not one to put my emotions out like this. You have to realize that everything I’m saying now is true.”
“Can I just—”
“And I know you didn’t want anything like this from me, but seeing you so angry this morning and then telling me to fuck off, that scared the shit out of me. I think that’s when I finally realized that I made a mistake in doing what I did this morning. And I’ll never stop apologizing for it.”
When he reaches for you again, you let him touch you—let him hold your thighs.
“So, please, forgive me, y/n.”
You want to contain your smile, however, you feel your lips twitching up. “If you would’ve let me finish, you would’ve known that I also developed feelings for you.”
At the wide grin on his lips, you laugh. “I was always going to forgive you. And I would’ve said yes to a date had you just asked me on the ground instead of in the air. Don’t ever do that shit again.”
“So you forgive me?” He asks.
“I forgive you,” you reply, bending over to be eye level with him. “But I’m serious. Don’t do that stunt again or I’ll cut you out of my life for good.”
The smile on his lips seems to grow even more, reaching his eyes. “Yes, ma’am.”
“Now,” you start, “come show me you meant every word.”
And boy does he.
