And in my opinion, the boy, Ruby, having assumptions about May is just him being a dick and doesn’t need to be sexist, especially since you show him wrong and wreck his shit easy in rival battles.

YES! Exactly! Thank you for your response, that's exactly it. It's so unfair that the girl character, and only the girl character, is put in this 'prove yourself' situation. :(

It get’s exhausting to see imo. Even when we do get women in media, they almost always have to go through this, “prove yourself to be as good as any boy!” schtick. (I remember being so disappointed that Katara had to go through it in season 1 of Avatar.)

I remember reading a comment on it to the likes of “It just happens that May is the type to have a crush easily and that Brendan is the the type to be rude to girls.” And I just don’t understand how after seeing these tropes again and again and again, anyone can really think it just a coincidence that boys and girls are written this way.

I just want female characters who are seen by their writers as more than just the female character. I just want girls who are allowed to exist without having to prove something. I don’t want them to be “smart for a girl" or "strong for a girl" or "tough for a girl.” I just want them to be smart, strong, and tough.

It’s 2014 is that really a lot to ask for?
