Hey everyone! What are some indie RPGs you all could recommend me? I love indie games, and since I'm getting into RPGs, I really want to see what the indie creators have done with the genre.

I've played Everhood and LunarLux, and have CrossCode and Undertale on The List. I'd love if you all could recommend me some of your favorites

"Earnest" is not usually a word I would use to describe a video game, but that's the one I keep coming back to when thinking about LunarLux, a game I backed on Kickstarter a few years ago that got a console port to the Switch this year after launching on Steam in 2023.

LunarLux is a turn-based RPG that takes some (very broad) mechanical inspiration from Mega Man Battle Network. Rather than battles taking place on a 3x6 grid (or 4x8 as seen in One Step From Eden, which is more directly cribbing from MMBN), this is straight-up turn-based where your turn consists of selecting the ability you want to use, and then being given a random draw of modifiers for that turn; for example, you might get a modifier that lets you regenerate some of the ability cost, or that multiplies the damage dealt by some amount, or give you bonus money to complete the battle. Then, on the enemy's turn, you have to play a little minigame that may consist of moving your character on a 1x3 or 3x3 grid to dodge attacks, or doing a little Undertale bullet hell segment, or just timing a shield to block an attack (which is also a resource you have to manage). You also get a limit break that plays out more like a Battle Network-style Program Advance, where you pick three of your abilities and do a super move with a little unique animation.

It also helps that it's fairly brief, clocking in for me at about 11 hours, and I went through to do most of the optional content I could find. Exploration is made significantly less tedious by the fact that you unlock a jet suit that lets you effectively noclip through environments once you've done the story in a given area, and they were sure to include various worthwhile pickups in the areas you can noclip to,

The most grating thing to me is also what makes it so earnest, which is how excited this developer is about the things they like. They love video games, especially indie video games, they love anime, they love collecting plushies, and they are so happy to share that with you through the game. The actual story is perfectly solid (though still full of references, like your dad being a scientist named "Dr. Thomas"), but random NPCs will just talk your ear off about how cool indie games are, or how much they love collecting plushies, especially of video game characters they like, and how you can have a plushie of this indie game character from Indie Game. While I normally genuinely hate this kind of stuff, they went in on it so hard that it kind of overflowed back around into being (slightly) endearing.

As of this post, it's on sale for $17 on the Switch eShop, and normally goes for $20 there and Steam, and I'd say that's a perfectly reasonable price for this if you're in the mood for a small RPG.

Now that there’s a Switch release I’ve finally gotten around to playing LunarLux, a game that takes heavy inspiration from Mega Man Battle Network and Star Force.  Brain isn’t braining well enough for me to write up a proper post for some reason, but I wanted to share my thoughts, so here’s a list of those I guess.

Spoilers ahead; if you want to avoid those I’ll just say I recommend the game.  I think the Switch version is still at a discounted price to celebrate the release?

-The gameplay is a bit closer to a traditional turn-based RPG.  When enemies attack, however, you enter various dodging minigames a la Undertale, and many of these will include BN-esque grids of panels for your character to navigate.  You can also shield, but shields are a resource you need to manage.  It’s pretty neat!

-The Skills you use in battle all have little illustrations on them that call back to Battle Chips/Cards, which is delightful.  You even get to copy a few skills from other characters, and get what’s essentially a Mega Chip/Card!  Active Skills cost SP to use, and you’re then given a random selection of the Support Skills you have equipped and can choose one to apply: healing HP/SP/shields, multiplying damage done, turning invisible for a turn, and more.  So, Active Skills are more like a spell list, while your Support Skills are closer to your Chip/Card Folder.  Adds some depth while still being easy to keep up with.

-There’s a system akin to Program Advances called Lux Combos, and I’m a big fan of the changes made.  A “recipe” for every combo exists somewhere in the game, and by picking them up, you add them to a collection that you can check in the middle of battle.  Having all of this information so easily accessible in-game is so, so nice.  One snag I found weird: while the collection tracks which combos you’ve performed (“mastered”), if you first discover a combo through trial and error, the recipe will be added to your collection…but you’ll have to perform it a second time to “master” it.  I’m not really sure why that’s the case?

-On a similar note, the menus nicely organize all the information you need on things like quests and completion.  I never felt lost when searching for something.  I found pretty much all the UI elements quite appealing!

-You can also track your “affinity” with each of the cities/regions in the game.  This goes up a little by doing quests or even just talking to people, and you get a discount at shops based on how high it is.  It’s a cool way to reward players for exploring.

-You’ve also got Upgrade Chips similar to those in Mega Man ZX, and many of them give you HUGE benefits.  I think my favorite I’ve found thus far is the one that doubles the party’s SP.

-One thing I will say is that fights can draaaaag, especially late/post-game and with upgraded enemies.  Potentially purely a skill issue on my part, but some fights just felt so long…

-I can’t really think of anything to say about the Network Dives.  Cute throwbacks, adds some variety, but I don’t feel particularly strongly about them.

-Walking in the overworld can sometimes feel just a bit slow?  The jet suit absolutely compensates though.  Flying around the map with almost zero restrictions is so much fun!

-The Number Trader is a fun inclusion, and shortening the codes to 6 digits goes SUCH a long way toward making them easy to remember, fantastic call.

-On that note, there’s a LOT of references in the game, not just to Mega Man though those are quite frequent, and nearly all of them made me chuckle.  You already know that I spent the majority of my playtime with the Stelar jet suit equipped.

-I really like Bella and Nickle, I enjoyed their arcs.  Saros is an entertaining villain (“LIFE IS AN EXPERIMENT…AND THE UNIVERSE IS MY LABORATORY!”  Chef’s kiss.), and most/all of the side characters felt like worthwhile additions. (Zara’s an elegant chuuni with Shadow the Hedgehog hair, automatically Best Girl.) I want to choose my words carefully here…I guess I feel like I wanted something more from Tetra?  Tetra’s fine, this is by no means me saying I have a problem with Tetra!  I just have this feeling like I wanted to enjoy her more than I did, or something?  Might be a Me problem.

-The story has a very thoughtful/introspective feel to it that I enjoy, with the major characters reacting to the inciting incident and just naturally coming into conflict over those different reactions.  The Big Reveal caught me by surprise in a good way!  My initial expectation was that the plot would move at such a pace that Comet Coda would be dealt with by the end, but that seems to be more of a myth arc we’re just starting here, and yeah that’s probably for the best.  Very eager to see where things go!

-Shoutout to Cosmic Clash, hitting us with one of the best songs in the game during the first boss leaves a hell of an impression.  Also Hyperspace Rumble for being the banger a final boss deserves.

A fun indie turn based RPG I've been playing a lot recently and wanted to reccomend

It's a turn based rpg, with a pretty fun skill management and leveling system, and some interrupting defense phases with a lot of variety (think Undertale's bullet hell style enemy phases). I personally didn't like the defense phases that much, but that's purely a personal thing due to my bad fingers. They were well designed and varied, and learning the rhythum of each was fun.

But i personally enjoyed the turn based aspects more and spent probably about 1/2 of my entire runtime just grinding because it was fun. (Downside was that theyre weren't good grinding zones. I kept going from map location to map location just to get minibosses to respawn)

The story if simple, but fun. An intriguing world to be thrust into and learn about, with a lot of fun setdressing to wander through. The characters were nice, but none very deep. One of those, every npc and important character, even rivals and villains, ade still perfectly pleasant and civil all the time, but i still liked it a lot.

Story was quite short, aiming toward a more series opener than complete story. A lot of the plot twists were very predictable, but the pleasant characters and fun gameplay kept me engaged.

Only bad aspect of he story was the cutscene where all the characters talk about how tough the final boss is and all hope is lost despite me beating him with 100% health, and only using 2 of my 50 health potions i stored. It was actually funny how easy that final boss was.

Music and visuals are great and did a great job at keeping me engaged during the slow moments of the story and the (very few) tedious moments of gameplay.

All in all, a really fun game i recommend.

(I didnt mean to buy this game, i got it in a discounted package with Coromon but ive barely touched that game.)

For a fairly cheap indie rpg, it really is a great time. Highy recommend.

I got this game called LunarLux and it is a ton o fun. The artstyle is great, the characters are very charming, the gameplay and battle system is really fun to learn and experiment with, the soundtrack is a bop. I'm still in the beginning, but I'm having a ton of fun with it.
