"The entrance to the tunnel was his only way out" and Marcoace please
It was one of the toughest battles he’d ever fought as a Whitebeard pirate. The second division had been sent out to deal with their enemies alone, because Ace had claimed they could easily handle them.
Now, he cursed his big mouth. He had been driven away from his crew and had been severely wounded. Somehow, the clothes of his enemies seemed fire-proof and their weapons could hurt him. As they came closer to him, Ace looked around for a way out. He was driven towards the edge of a forest they’d explored earlier. The forest wasn’t big, but Ace had seen a cave tunnel about a hundred yards in. They hadn’t ventured into the tunnel, so he had no way of knowing where it led, but he had only a few seconds to decide that that was his only option for now.
He dashed into the forest, suppressing the urge to burn the trees behind him. I would barely slow his pursuers down, and besides letting them know exactly where he was going, it wasn’t worth killing all wildlife on this island either. Surprising himself, Ace found the cave entrance within a few minutes. If he hadn’t known what he’d been looking for, he would probably have run right past it, as the entrance was hidden by plants.
He heard his enemies not too far behind him and quickly pushed himself through the leaves and branches into the tunnel. Not waiting to be discovered, he walked as far as the little light from the entrance could still reach, and then followed the tunnel around the corner, where he was covered in complete darkness. He still heard the muffled sounds of his enemies searching for him, but they seemed to go right past the cave.
It was only then when the pain really set in. Ace brought his hand up to his side and felt how it got soaked by a warm liquid in a matter of seconds. Well, that wasn’t great…
---------
He had no idea how much time had past when he woke up again. When he opened his eyes, it took a moment to realize that he hadn’t gone blind, but that he was still inside the pinch black darkness of the cave where he had collapsed. Through the sound of his heart pounding in his ears, he could hear some noises from outside the cave. He just couldn’t make out what it was. Where his enemies still looking for him?
Then the noises came closer. Yes, they were definitely coming closer. It sounded like someone moved the plants at the entrance and stepped into the tunnel.
Shit, Ace thought, and tried to get up from the ground. His body protested, but when he saw a blueish light coming towards him, he knew it wasn’t an option to stay there, if he didn’t want to be found.
However, as he struggled to get up, the footsteps stopped. “Ace?” A voice echoed through the tunnel.
Ace let out a relieved sigh and let his body sink down to the ground again. “Ma–,“ he managed to bring out.
Footsteps hurried towards him, and after a few seconds, Marco appeared around the corner, blue flames in his hand. “Ace!”
He quickly sat down next to Ace, and after a quick assessment of his injuries, he let the blue flames lick Ace’s wounded side. “Shit, Ace, don’t scare us like that,” he said, as he lifted Ace’s head to lay it on his lap. His hand touched Ace’s abs near his wound, as he kept healing him.
Ace smiled, already feeling slightly better. “You were worried?”
Marco frowned. “Of course! We quite quickly noticed that your division couldn’t handle this by themselves, so we helped to drive those bastards off the island. But we couldn’t find you anywhere. For all we knew, they had kidnapped or killed you.”
Ace chuckled, but it sent a bolt of pain through his body. “I won’t let myself get killed that easily.”
Marco looked Ace straight in the eyes from above him. “Really now? Shall I stop healing you then?” He slowly pulled his hand back.
“No!” Ace said, as he put his hand on Marco’s to keep it in place. He quite liked the touch of Marco’s hand on his body, and he wasn’t sure that was a side effect of the healing process. He had seen Marco heal people often, but he had never needed it himself, until now. He couldn’t say it was a bad experience. He smiled up at Marco. “I’m glad you found me.”
Marco smiled back at him. “You shouldn’t be afraid to ask for help, you know. It’s not a shame.”
Ace didn’t answer, and they kept sitting there in silence for a while. Even though Ace still felt like shit, he enjoyed lying on Marco’s lap, and although he would never admit it to anyone, he enjoyed being cared for by Marco.
After what felt like no time, Marco’s flames on his wound died out, leaving just enough flames on his hand to light the area. Marco looked into Ace’s eyes again, his hand still resting on the place he’d just treated. “We should head back,” he said, his voice slightly husky.
“Do we have to?” Ace replied, not breaking eye contact. I’d much rather stay alone with you a little longer, he thought, but he didn’t dare saying it.
Marco swallowed. “The others are still looking for you. We should let them know you’re okay.”
He lifted Ace from his lap, forcing the latter to sit up. Marco himself sat down in crouched position. “You should be careful with that, though.” He nodded to his almost healed side. “Better not exert yourself,” he said, as he put one arm behind Ace’s back, and one underneath his knees. With one swift movement, Marco stood up, lifting Ace from the ground in the process.
“What are you doing?!” Ace exclaimed. “I can walk!” Though he protested, he didn’t actually make an effort to get out of Marco’s arms.
“Shh,” Marco said. “I know you can, but you shouldn’t. You should be resting.” A cheeky smile formed on his lips as he walked towards the exit of the cave. “Doctor’s orders.”
Ace looked at his face but couldn’t determine how serious Marco was. However, Ace decided to take the doctor’s advice very seriously, and draped his arm around Marco’s neck for more stability. As they walked towards the light, he could see a slight blush on Marco’s face, and Ace felt encouraged to place his head in the crook of Marco’s neck.
He could definitely get used to this treatment from Marco. Ace smiled, and promised himself that he would have to get injured more often.
