This is a rough draft of an excerpt from #TSEliot's "The Hollow Men". This is the frst time I've really been able to pick up a #calligraphy pen since I injured my arm last week. I chose a #quote by #malalayousafzai. So...I'm pretty sure I quickly sketched this messy #LunchtimeLettering piece the first day of the month then forgot to post it because I was so busy. Today I took a quick photo of it to post over lunch and promptly forgot because I was so busy. Sometimes a #practice just doesn't go the way I want it to. This is the third time I've written out this #quote, which is frustrating...and yet I've enjoyed every minute of the time I've spent working on it. In more ways than one, this piece is really speaking to me. Also, these #Maratre majuscules are HARD. For all the people who tell me they "could never do #calligraphy", I'd like to show y'all a #progress shot. The top left was one of my very first practice pieces in May of 2014, the top right is a #LunchtimeLettering piece from July of 2015, and the bottom is another one from two weeks ago. You can see major improvement within the first year, but I'd venture to say it still didn't even look much like calligraphy until my second year of practice. It's a long game we play if we want to get better at the things we love. That said, yes, you CAN do calligraphy. There are no shortcuts. You have to show up and do the work. However, I promise that whether yours is anything as terrible as mine was or possibly even worse, it will absolutely get better with regular practice. Just keep at it and remember that there is always more to learn.
