Lu Over the Wall
I watched Lu Over the Wall and it was pretty good!
The 41st Ottawa International Animation Festival was an absolutely wonderful experience. I felt so immersed in the films that were presented, I met a ton of very kind and awesome people, and as of this writing, I feel inspiration coming back to me after going through a bit of a burnout for the past several months. Along with seeing shorts from around the world and meeting people, I saw three excellent feature films that displayed very strong women. The first one was "Lu Over The Wall", directed by Masaaki Yuasa. A fun filled light hearted fantasy about a little mermaid girl named Lu, who is able to dance on the surface world upon hearing music. The film was bursting with fluid animation, wonderful dance sequences, and the struggle between humans and merfolk. The 2nd was Cartoon Saloon's "The Breadwinner", based off a novel by Deborah Ellis. The dramatic story of a young Afghan girl named Parvana whose father is unfairly imprisoned by rebels, and goes to great lengths to support her family, including disguising herself as a boy. Cartoon Saloon's reputation for amazing animated films goes without saying, but the thing that pulled me in the most was Parvana's persistence, as well as finding hope in a place that is unjust for women. The 3rd was another by Masaaki Yuasa entitled "The Night Is Short, Walk On Girl", a hilarious romantic comedy about a young black haired girl that can hold her liquor, and makes a positive impression on the people she meets, while a young man tries to profess his love to her in a string of comedic mishaps along with a cast of characters that will leave you howling. I am so happy I got to experience all three of these films at the Bytowne Cinema, and I hope in some way they make it to the United States for legal distribution. Going to Ottawa was a breathtaking experience, and I hope to not only attend it again, but to try and submit something that can be played alongside everyone else's amazing shorts. #oiaf2017 #luoverthewall #thebreadwinner #nightisshortwalkongirl #ottawainternationalanimationfestival
