I am a budding rose when I’m cut down, Mara insists, as the town around her bemoans this revelation. Something in it for her after staying away for so long – it is far more menacing to consider what is changed. All that clings to her roving spirit out of the diffuse mill of ranging psyches drawing her in. Trying not to look in the eyes of those passing through as it recalled one of her many nightmares while she absorbed the sun.
Pulsing through them into Mara with recalcitrance as her own natural coldness radiated with unliving truth. The light went out of them as she brushes past; as if, for an instant, they are poisoned by sorrows not their own. To see it would be far more pitying than how it made them feel to be a lonely spectre temporarily affixed to some heated vessel. That she could bring such instant reservations by appearing to the mind’s eye raised cataclysmic judgement from any who gave birth to the town out of their own sweat, blood & come. It was a side Mara had never witnessed seeming both stubborn & cruel, but wise in the sense that it disregarded the past.
