68. Awkward hug

     how much time had passed since his CHAMPION had left the king wasn’t        certain, but enough for doubt and self loathing to poison his mind. not that        it hadn’t been there BEFORE, the show of ego and elegance a ploy to disguise        himself from what he truly was. but regardless, hoggle had returned. the king        TOWERED over the dwarf, a looming authority of RAGE. which is… why his        next action surprised even himself.

       his expression melted, and the king slowly sunk to his knees, awkwardly        hesitating for a moment before pulling the dwarf into an embrace. hoggle        smells kinda weird. he was… sorry. who did you think it was that carefully        laid out JEWELS and TRINKETS for hoggle that he had supposedly just        found?? he acted like he didn’t care, like he’d never cared and never would,        but he cared more than he was willing to admit. Jareth was alone, forever        and always, and hoggle was basically all he had considering he was possibly        the only other creature in the labyrinth with more than half a brain.

                         ‘       I’m Sorry. ‘

Hoggle stiffened at the hug. It wasn’t something Jareth normally did, especially not to him. Affection seemed like a foreign thing to the goblin king and in a way it showed with how awkward the embrace was, not to mention Hoggle wasn’t the most affectionate person himself. What came next caught him even more off guard; Jareth had apologized.

He never thought he’d see the day when those words would pass through Jareth’s lips, especially in such a seemingly genuine manner. Hoggle was bewildered beyond belief. It could be a trick but Jareth seemed sincere which was unlike him. There wasn’t any way Hoggle could react, in fact he was just straight up dumbfounded. “Pardon me, your majesty, but it just sounded like you apologized.” he said. Brows furrowed on the dwarf’s face as he tried to make sense of it all but it just puzzled him further. Perhaps this wasn’t really Jareth but his nice twin. That would make more sense.
