Luyten of Shunky’s Leviathan Rupture!
The Death of Luyten - Leoncio Harmr
Hello! I was wondering if you'd be up for writing a snippet of Rami and Gwil on Lutyen?
Gwil knocks on Rami’s door, and waits barely a second before he opens it, hurrying into Rami’s room.
Rami jumps at his desk, almost knocking over his glass of water as he looks up from his book. “What— Gwil, I could have been— busy.”
“Oh, come on,” Gwil says, smiling at Rami. “You’re never busy. What is it today?” He reaches over, picking up the book from Rami’s desk. “How many times can you read Death in the Clouds?”
“Until I can figure it out,” Rami says, reaching out to take the book back from him. “It makes no sense.”
“Whatever,” Gwil says. “Come on.”
“What?” Rami asks.
“I’ve got something to show you,” Gwil says, and Rami looks around.
“What is it?” Rami asks.
“Put a jumper on,” Gwil says. “Did you bring gloves?”
“Gloves?” Rami asks, and Gwil smiles. “I— I suppose, yes.” Rami slowly pushes his chair back, and walks over to his small wardrobe, taking out a jumper and pulling it on. He moves some things around, and finally digs out his gloves, and a hat as well. “Okay. I’m…ready?” he says with a bit of hesitation.
“Let’s go,” Gwil says. They walk down the hallways of the Mercury, heading towards the main lift that takes the crew down to the surface.
“What’s going on?” Rami asks, looking up at Gwil.
“Ballot’s already been outside, made sure it’s all safe.”
“Oh god, Gwil,” Rami says, “I— safe? What— oh my god. Is it some sort of— monster?”
Gwil looks at Rami, and then starts to laugh. “First of all,” he says, “Ballot wouldn’t be handling monsters. Sadly, that’d be me. Secondly, I wouldn’t force you out of your room just to lead you to certain death.”
They enter the lift, and Rami rolls his eyes. “No, of course not,” he says. “It’s not like you didn’t force me to eat—”
“I didn’t force you to eat anything,” Gwil says.
“You heavily implied we wouldn’t be mates anymore—”
“I ate it first!” Gwil exclaims, and then they both laugh. “Put your hat and gloves on before we get out there. I won’t have you complaining about the cold.”
“Cold?” Rami repeats.
“Why did you think I told you to put on a jumper?” Gwil asks. The doors open, and they’re immediately hit with a blast of cool air, carrying in—
“Snow!” Rami exclaims happily, hurrying out of the lift out onto the surface of Luyten. He looks up at the sky, shielding his eyes with his hand, and then he turns around to look at Gwil, a bright grin on his face. “It’s snow!”
“It is,” Gwil nods, reaching into his pocket, pulling out his own gloves, pulling them on.
“I— wow.” Rami looks around, bouncing happily. There’s not much, it’s not a blizzard or anything like that, just flurries. It doesn’t really surprise either of them that Luyten has snow— it’s so similar to Earth in every other way, and they’ve seen it rain already, but this is snow. And it’s so pretty. “Gwil, it’s snowing!” Rami tugs off one of his gloves, holding his hand up to the sky, watching snowflakes land in his hand. “Has Ballot studied the structure of the snowflakes yet?” he asks.
“Sure she’s working on it,” Gwil says. “She was out here taking samples and photographs.”
“I’d be interested in finding out if they form in similar structures here,” Rami says, and he lifts his hand up close to his face, trying to examine them before they melt. “The temperature and humidity here is similar to Earth, and those are the factors that primarily determine the—”
“Sorry,” Gwil says with a smile, “you’re a meteorologist now?”
“Gwil, it’s snow!” Rami exclaims, and then he tilts his head back, sticking his tongue out. He starts spinning around, trying to catch a snowflake, dizzily stumbling over his feet. “Isn’t it so lovely?”
“Of course it is,” Gwil says, and he holds his hand out as well. “Why do you think I came to get you?”
Rami smiles over at him, bouncing excitedly on his feet. “Thank you,” he says, and then he tilts his head back up to the sky, closing his eyes and feeling the snowflakes hit his face, and he just keeps smiling.

The space race appears to have resurfaced recently. We’ve seen huge moon projects from firms all around the world in recent years, such as Agile Space Industries’ Griffin lunar lander, ICON’s ambitions to 3D print structures on the Moon, and even China’s intentions to 3D print a base on the Moon. Luyten, an Australian 3D printer manufacturer recently revealed its aspirations to conquer the final…
