The quiet of the night is eerie when with whatever the hell the next day will bring looming just on the horizon.
Guy has been on edge ever since hearing the announcement from the scientists booming across the city. In a way, it’s almost worse to have to wait and see what will emerge from the enormous cocoons in each district rather than to be able to see the threat they are facing head on. The anticipation is heavy in his gut.
He should sleep, he knows that. Especially if tomorrow will mean he has to fight. It’s obvious that he’d perform better in combat after a full nights rest, but... try as he might, he can’t get comfortable. And the absence of so many of the city’s usual sounds, the emptiness with so many people having disappeared, it’s all making him restless.
Guy’s first thought is to ride the train for a while. The whirr of the wheels on the track, the rumble of the passenger cars as they move across the cityscape, maybe it’ll be enough to calm his nerves. Lull him to sleep even. But by the time he’s ridden for a full two hours, he’s not feeling much of a difference.
On a whim, he gets off the train in Sector Six. There are parks here, aren’t there? Maybe he’ll be able to find some solace among the greenery, among the flowers that remind him of home.
He’s not alone, he finds, after a few minutes of wandering through a public garden. There’s someone else here, maybe with the same idea he has. Might as well start up a conversation.
“Helluva night, isn’t it?”
