Carl gripped her hands a bit too tight as she suddenly pulled him into a dance. A slow one at that, which made him frown. “-- I don’t know what I’m doing.” He said to her in a small voice.

Carl was bust reading when he felt her rest against him. Thinking she wanted attention he looked over to only find her fast a sleep. Smiling at her a bit he moved to pull the sheets over her before returning to his book.

“I’m sorry to hear that,” the man said, looking at the ground beneath his feet. He wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do so he stayed still, not making eye-contact. Why he’d even asked about her parents in the first place was beyond him.

silence filled the room as carl stood in the hallway, having searched the vacant house for what seemed like a lifetime.

“posy.” no response. “posy!” still no response.

had she left? had she been kidnapped? 

this was his fault. he knew he should’ve brought her along to raid for supplies, but he didn’t. he always thought he could be the big damn hero and handle everything on his own, but he couldn’t handle this.

his promise to keep her safe was just another inimical lie.

“no… please…” sobs escaped his trembling lips as he kicked a chair over before slinking against the wall, throwing his face in his hands to muffle the cries. “i’m sorry… i’m so sorry…”
