Thoughts about a way to financially support me writing + an opportunity to learn from me?
First off, I want to make it really, really clear (especially for any writers who may be new to the fanfic scene) that it is super duper illegal to charge for fanfic. Not only is making money off someone else’s IP illegal, my understanding is that any fanfic writers who do this (whether through uploading behind a paywall or selling physical copies) endanger ao3 and the larger existence of fanfic. Also, fanfic is writing that’s for a community by the community. Paywalling it undermines the collective, reciprocal nature of fanfic in a way that I don’t feel good about. I’m never going to paywall fic and I am never going to support anyone who chooses to do that.
That said, I am a trans person who fled the US without a job or prospects (already a burden to my family, iykyk) about six months ago. I work part time now, which is part of why I’m able to crank out 17k long chapters of high quality fic (self brag, sorry, but those are y’all’s words too) every couple of weeks. A little extra money would go a long way.
A friend pitched to me the idea of starting a Patreon and — like I said, never going to put fic behind a paywall for so many reasons— the more I thought about the idea, the more I thought I could maybe make something people might be interested in?
TLDR: support tier, writing tier (with advices posts + edit opportunities), poll at the bottom
It isn’t that unusual for me to get asks about writing advice, which I really enjoy answering. I actually have a side business offering professional editing services, that’s how much I like helping people with their writing. For the last few days, I have been considering the idea of creating a writing-focused Patreon, maybe with 2-3 tiers.
The first tier might be some kind of general support tier, with few perks, but a way for people who aren’t interested in writing-based content to support me, considering that every chapter of ly takes about 3-4 hours per 1000 words. I’d like to offer ly-related perks, but also morally would kind of like to keep their names off a potential Patreon, so I’m still thinking over what I could feel comfortable offering here. I’d keep the cost low, or maybe offer a couple of different price point support tier options (like $3-$5 usd?)
The second tier would have much more content! I am thinking about writing 2-3 sizable posts about writing (advice, grammar deep dives, organization tips, etc) per month. My goal for this content would be that it helps the growth of writers of all content, whether it’s phanfic, fanfic, or original fiction. Like I said, I’d like to keep dnp’s names off a potential Patreon, but it’s also probably impossible for me to talk about writing without talking LY and my process for it. Might even use breakdowns of LY to illustrate whatever point I’m trying to make! But also might change the characters names before upload. Here’s a list of some topics I thought might be interesting to cover, though I would also probably set up a way for members to request topics:
The joys of writing out of order
MM romance and the curse of the double “he” pronoun (this also applies to sapphics!)
Using sentence length to shape the tone of a scene
Overcoming writer’s block
Writing a long, difficult conversations without wanting to quit writing and move to remote the remote mountains without internet access
Why the thesaurus should be your best friend and how to pick the EXACT RIGHT WORD
I’m also interested in offering writing tier members an offer a one-time edit or writer’s bootcamp (with word limits — sorry, I can’t commit to editing anyone’s 25k fic. Just for context, 25k is about $150-$200 usd when I do it professionally). My professional editing style tends to be pretty explanation heavy, which I’d definitely lean into for these edits, with the hope that even a one-time experience may have a larger impact on writers than just enhancing the one piece of writing. Price-wise, I’m thinking maybe $8-$10 a month? I know that feels like a lot, but I don’t anticipate this getting enough subscribers to make a lower price point feasible for my time, especially after Patreon takes their cut. However, if I do magically end up getting enough subscribers to make a lower price point viable, I would definitely be open to revisiting the price.
If people really like the editing feedback and end up wanting feedback on a more ongoing basis to support their growth as a writer, I would consider a more expensive writing tier down the line that could support me doing monthly check ins, maybe workshopping a smallish word count (3-5k?) with some kind of focus on a specific topic or goal that the author wants to focus on improving. Alternatively, Patreon offers one time digital purchases, so I could look at offering a la carte editing that way, or direct interested folks to my professional editing business.
A note on my credentials: absolutely everything is my opinion, my experience, and based on my own process. I don’t have a degree in creative writing and, while I have written professionally, it was in an academic setting. That said, I have been writing creatively my entire life, both fanfic and original fiction, and do feel like I have a lot of knowledge to share! But everyone writes differently, and I understand that what works for me won’t work for everyone. I hope that by covering a range of topics, everyone will be able to take value from something.
I’ve set up a poll about this, but if you have more to say than a single-button-click, please reach out — I’ll monitor the post replies, and also my ask box and DMs are always open. Please be honest! It’s only because of y’all’s support and enthusiasm for my writing that I’m even considering doing this, and I would never want to endanger that support. Absolutely no pressure from me to answer in any particular way. However, if you are genuinely against me doing this, please consider dropping me a line somewhere about why (anon is fine if you don’t want to be identified!!) — I want to make sure I’m considering all perspectives and potential issues before committing to this.

I’m not putting this in any of the main tags (for obvious reasons), so I would really appreciate reblogs to help get this in front of more readers’ eyes. I’ll also link it in the next chapter.
