Frances Layland-Barratt - Lycanthia (Herbert Jenkins, 1935)
"Do I insult you again," he said, "by asking your price?" "Oh," she said, "monsieur is used to women who give freely, for his looks, and his grace, and out of pity. Women love to pity you. Women who are afraid of you." "Not you." "I? I'd couple with you in the daylight. When the night came, I'd tear out your throat. You should be afraid, not I." "You terrify me," he said. "That's so," she said.
Goodness okay, I’ve be searching werewolf books to read mainly from early times, but I’ve see you read Lycanthia! Is it worth the read? On goodreads it has like one review but just in stars. So if maybe, I would love to know your thoughts and other recommendations. Perhaps leave them under goodreads for other readers alike, it’s an old book and seems so forgotten about
Hey sorry it took so long to reply! So Lycanthia is one of those books where it's like, good potential/interesting stuff but you do gotta wade through some Victorian classism/racism/ect to get through it. Though , tbf some of that might be poking fun at those Victorian tropes as the book was actually written in the 30s xD
Anyway all this to say I think it's a book that ought to be rediscovered and given, if I may be be so bold, the @mayhemchicken treatment of adapting old Gothic works cuz they always do a good job of pulling at the most interesting threads of a wonky story
Also it's got a chain smoking teenage were wolf girl with a huge dog and an evil nurse. What's not to like?
This reminded me, I headcanon the Harkers being dog people already (seeing also how Mina pet the scared dog) but especially after the Everything, that they'll get a big dog. Maybe especially when they have the baby, because they know dogs consistently warn when there's Evil around. So Quincey gets used to canines. Big ones and Art's small.
Technically in my timeline they do have Lycanthia as combo dog and secretary xD She definitely babysits for Quincey from time to time (she's a lot more able to deal with his dhampir shenanigans thrn most, being Creature of the Night adjacent herself)
@anony-geist Thank you for these wonderful Lycanthia doodle ideas xD "So I guess we have a new dog daughter (she's like only 3 years younge
Been trying to get myself back in the headspace to work on my comics, but till then here’s some more Lycanthia doodles. Really still tickled
🐺🌹 🐺🌹 <- Lycanthia (because it sounds like the combo of words for wolf and flower)
Ha it does xD Lovley! I accept on her behalf 🩷🌹
Wow Lycanthia (by Frances Layland) is super rare, there is like no info about the contents or the characters or anything beyond the summary on the blurb online and it's set at the end of 19th century England despite being written in 1930. And every physical copy is 400 dollars up
Yup! I only know about it because my university library had a copy, and from what I can tell only like, 3 libraries in the country have one :s
Luckily Internet Archive has the book scanned into their site!
Lycanthia, an orphan child of a Polish nobleman and an English mother is brought up by a servant in an atmosphere of strange satanic rites a
Been trying to get myself back in the headspace to work on my comics, but till then here’s some more Lycanthia doodles. Really still tickled with the idea of her ending up working at Hawkins and Harker as a sassy secretary. Seen several people have Robert Bobert holt from THE BEETLE end up as a clerk there too and I think they’d be a funny duo. This late 30s something man with bug trauma and a teenage cigarette smoking werewolf xD
