Visited Lydford Gorge on Dartmoor, such a beautiful atmospheric place. Draped in moss and ferns. Plus I spotted some Artists bracket, Ganoderma applanatum.

As your blogger will be out of town for a bit, in the U.K., this week and next will feature coins from Britain. This week we have an example of a “Lydford Penny,” a coin named for its mint, and interesting in its circulation pattern.
Lydford is currently a small village in Devon, in the far south west of England. Though today it is unassuming, it was once an important town and the site of an major mint in Anglo-Saxon times. It began to strike coins in the 970s CE, under the rule of king Edgar, who appears on a majority of the coins, along with the name of the moneyer, which varied greatly.
This coinage had a large circulation, with many of the coins being found across Northern Europe. In fact, the majority have been discovered in Scandinavia, leading to the hypothesis that these coins were used as a bribe to dissuade Viking raids. Kings paid Scandinavian leaders to leave their kingdoms alone, leading these coins to sometimes be termed "Danegeld." These fees, however, were not highly effective, as the raids continued, despite the payment exacted.
