Tell It to the Bees spoilers (and very long post)
Some people say that their first kiss came a bit out of the blue. I know what you mean. But I also think you can find explanations that make it more understandable. Idk I’m thinking out loud now but:
1. How can you not kiss Jean she’s such a cutiepie
2. Okay, so. We have Lydia. Lydia, who does still kind of love her husband but he doesn’t love her. She’s in this state of mind. Then this doctor comes. She talks to her in the park and tells her that she enjoys her company. That’s already a kind of affection, isn’t it? You have her husband who literally runs from Lydia and on the other side, there’s this woman who just told Lydia that she likes her company. Without knowing her that much. Maybe something inside Lydia went like hmm. And hey, don’t forget: Lydia writes Jean a note that says, that she would have appreciated it if they met again in the park. Maybe something draws Lydia to Jean.
Jean is also there when Lydia felt like trash and she cried in her arms. Again, this strange woman just being there for her and bringing her books. Why? Why does Jean care for her?
Then the trip. Trip in it’s double meaning. The walking trip but Lydia also trips - and falls right into Jean’s arms. And let me tell you, idk man but if you’re not straight that just gives you the rest. If you know the movie, compare it to that gay ass blowing-the-bee-away scene. It’s described just like that in the book. The world stops and there is Lydia, having Jean touching her where Lydia was starving to be touched. I think that it what started the fire for Lydia. I think it was somewhere in the back of her head already, but this made her catch fire. Then the question: Why me. It sums up what I said above. Why does Jean care? Why was she so nice? And the falling-into-her-arms and that kind of slow motion just gave her an answer to something she might have already known somewhere deep inside her heart.
If your point now is “Well, that’s a nice explanation ma’am but I wanted to read that black on white in the book just as I did with Jean’s feelings, not some between the lines thing”, then yeah that’s ok. I’m just rambling about the book which I love so much
