Dear Lynette,

Here’s my list of demands for you:

1. I demand you shut up.

2. I demand you stop using shippers as a scapegoat in the outlander fandom

3. I demand you stop painting shippers in a bad light to further your agenda

Of course like many words in the English language, “demand” can have many meanings. Shippers have never demanded, commanded, or dictated anything in this fandom, as you are obviously implying. Do we feel we have a right to get what we want? No. Do we feel entitled? No. Most of us don’t. Of course there are the trolls, who pretend to ship when they instead just want to stir up 💩 for shippers.

What we have done is questioned, challenged, speculated and wished for many things. Sure, we challenge and question many things that Sam and Cait say or do. We speculate about where they are, and we wish they were together. They are magic and I believe that it’s a rare thing that they have. That’s why we are here after all.

But of course my demands for you are representative of the latter, much like your comments about us. Every fandom has shippers. For the life of me, I still can’t figure out why shipping in this fandom is so taboo. It is so bad we believe in the love that Sam and Cait have for each other? And believe it or not, most of us don’t have any ill will towards Tony or whomever Sam is dating. I know I don’t. I don’t wish for anything bad to happen to any of them. I don’t wish for their professional or personal failures and I sure as hell don’t believe they owe me anything. What we believe is what we believe. Much like religion or politics, which is a personal choice for each and every person, but shipping shouldn’t even be up there with religion and politics. For most it’s just something fun. It was something fun. It’s become a pain in the ass, and totally not worth it. But here I am, and a lot of us are here, just for spite. To say “you can’t make us stop believing” — yep, like the song.

At around the 25 minute mark, Lynette discusses Richard and Sophie a bit:

“I have been trying to push for . . . can I just get Richard and Sophie on a cover by themselves? Because I know that, if it doesn’t happen in the next year I’ll feel like I completely failed. They’ll deserve a cover definitely and the fans are already asking for it with them too. And they’re so great together. They’re just great. The difference between interviewing them now versus when they first joined the show it’s like night and day. So it’s been great.”

I think it’s awesome to hear from someone who has actually had interactions with the two of them about how much they have changed since they first joined the show. I haven’t been around long, but even I can see they’re much more comfortable with press situations than before.

Sam Once Again Confirms That He and Cait Are Not a Couple

One of the things that came from SDCC that I am sure certain ES want to overlook is the fact that once again Sam confirmed very clearly that he and Cait were not a couple. And from Cait’s body language, she also confirmed it. It happened during the Entertainment Weekly interview with Lynette Rice.

Lynette asked if any of the cast would care to share “a really awkward moment with an Outlander fan.” 

Sam responded that they had gotten a fan letter from someone who was “very upset” that himself and Cait are “obviously not together.” It is noteworthy that Sam both verbally and physically emphasized this point. He also said that the fan was “very upset” because they thought Sam and Cait had been “lying to them all this time.”

Cait and some of the other cast were smiling as Sam was talking and clearly trying to hold back showing how bizarre they thought this kind of fan reaction was. 

It is significant that that was the thing that Sam chose as an example of “a really awkward” fan “moment.” He is clearly not amused by fans who take their need for the ship to be real to the point that they get upset and accuse the cast of lying to them when they finally figure out the ship isn’t real.

This reminds me of what Sam said in the KDS/ IFH denial interview:

Of course the ES distorted the message that Sam and Cait made way back in January 2016. Some of them will undoubtedly distort this message as well so they can continue to believe in the ship.

But part of being an adult is learning to accept reality and not twisting it to conform to one’s desires.

It is possible to actually be a happy wishful shipper without all the drama. 

But no matter what individual ES decide to do about this new message, it doesn’t change the fact at all that Sam and Cait are not a couple.
