Aboriginal man's story of nuclear bomb survival told with virtual reality

Nyarri Morgan's first contact with whites came when he witnessed a nuclear bomb explosion at the British testing site at Maralinga, South Australia. In an unlikely collision of cultures, state-of-the-art 3D film technology is bringing his story to life.

I’ve heard about this strange incident a few times. The fact that many of the people living in the area of Maralinga, Australia had never had any contact with Western Civilization before having a literal atomic bomb dropped on them is pretty wild. One factoid I’ve never been able to corroborate: supposedly, there’s already a tribal dance meant to communicate the story for future generations.

Last night MoMA Film hosted its first-ever VR screening as part of this week's series Slithering Screens: 10 Years of New Frontier at Sundance Institute. Following a talk by the filmmaker Lynette Wallworth, audience members used virtual reality headsets to experience a 3-D, 360-degree short film about an indigenous elder in the Australian outback who witnessed the British government’s 1950s atomic weapons tests.

Australian artist Lynette Wallworth discusses what inspires her remarkable video installations and films during the World Economic Forum​, where Forma Arts and Wallworth presented Evolution of Fearlessness.

Evolution of Fearlessness presents 10 portraits of refugee women who live in Australia and originate from countries such as Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, Chile, and El Salvador. 

“The stories of these women verge from the horrendous to the terribly sad. Most have experienced extreme acts of violence and worse. But the work is not about what has happened to the women, it is about who they have become” -Wallworth

In 2014 September Coral: Rekindling Venus (2012) received its Chinese premiere at the World Economic Forum in Tianjin. Coral is one of Australian video-artist Lynette Wallworth's most ambitious works to date, a large-scale video works exploring the intimacy of the natural world and our relationship to it. After the film received high acclaim Wallworth was invited back to present work at The Annual Meeting in Davos-Klosters. 

Later this month Wallworth's intimate and moving exploration of resilience in the lives of a handful of female refugees, Evolution of Fearlessness (2008), will be housed in The Refuge of the World Economic Forum's Congress Centre in Davos-Klosters.

Attached is a short film, produced by Sam Blair in 2013 to celebrate 10 years of Forma Arts, in which the artist speaks about how the project came into being and what it is like to experience the work as a visitor.

After receiving its world premiere in Brussels earlier this year, Darkness and Light will receive its Australian Premiere during Sydney International Festival in January 2015. Belgian organist/composer Foccroulle and Australian artist/filmmaker Wallworth have created a remarkable performance that transcends the conventional form of the organ recital. A selection of music spanning 350 years will be performed by Foccroulle on Sydney Town Hall’s grand organ in dialogue with Wallworth's luminant video projections of Australian landscapes and astronomical footage supplied by NASA.
