Raising, Keeping and Lovin' Chickens
I often have visions for how certain activities will turn out in my mind. Right now, raising chickens is high on that list of envisioned activities. I see building a gorgeous chicken coop, getting my eggs for breakfast in the morning and feeding our chickens from my rustic pail. My friend Jackie nailed her vision of what chickens will actually mean for us:
@elaineellis @vikasreddy not gonna lie, I'm envisioning crazy out of control chickens refusing to make eggs just running around the yard. :)
February 3, 2013
This is what is going to happen. I mean let's be honest, neither Vikas nor I have ever gotten up early enough in the morning to scramble eggs before work. But I am still stubbornly holding onto my vision.
Since we've heard mixed reviews on how much work it is, how smelly it is and how expensive it is, we signed up for the class "Raising, Keeping and Lovin' Chickens" at Lyons Farmette.
The class was wonderful (and a bargain at $10 per person). The owner, Betsy, kept emphasizing that it was not cheaper to buy your own chickens, which kind of makes me wonder how big farms are able to make eggs so cheap. Which when I think about how those cheap eggs came about, I'm probably going to be grossed out and want to raise my own chickens even more.
Did you know you order baby chicks in the mail by overnight delivery?!?! You have to pick them up first thing and get them water. Or that chickens don't lay eggs in the winter much? We also learned about all the different breeds and their egg laying capabilities.
The phrase "spring chicken" is an actual thing. I guess the chicks that hatch in the fall are a little off, so we have until spring 2014 to decide since we won't move into our place until this fall. I think we're pretty excited but due to where we live, we are worried about having bear prey right in our backyard. It's not an absolute, but if it happens we will happily share our fresh eggs.
If you're in Colorado, I highly recommend you check out Lyons Farmette upcoming class schedule. Classes on chocolates, gardening, bee keeping, composting, etc. They also have farm-to-table dinners. Last year Vikas and I did a farm-to-table dinner at Meadowlark Farms, so I hope we can do another this year.
Vikas and I recently purchased a llama painting. We named him Garry.
