Interview below the cut!

1. How long have you been in the Ace Attorney fandom?

From around June 2021! My partner has loved the series since way back when the first game came out in the US, and always wanted to take me through the series because he (rightfully so haha) knew I would love it too. Once the original trilogy was re-released as a bundle, he knew it was finally time. We started right from AA1 and binged all the way through AA6 together, including reading the entire games aloud (he read for all the guys and I would read all the girls - it made the already enjoyable dialogue even more so!). It made the games special because we got to experience them together in such a fun way (him playing them with me and me for the first time) and I absolutely fell in love with the absolute charm of the series and every single character. I was already diving into the fandom by the time we hit AA2 because I knew even then I wanted more of these darling characters in my life.

2. What's your favorite aspect of the Narumayo ship?

I love how much they mean to one another, and how much they're at ease in each other's presence. It comes out in their banter, their teasing, that they don't need to worry about being anything but themselves when they're together. That he'd do anything to keep her safe and that she knows he'll always come to save her. It's that bond they've always had that really made me fall in love with them.

3. What is your favourite thing to draw/write? And are you working on anything at the moment? My favorite things to write are AUs, any type of them! I love taking everything I enjoy about the source material and imagining the characters in different worlds, different situations. I find it so much fun to explore what their personalities and dynamics bring in a different universe; to keep everything I love about them but to see it from a new lens.

I have a few ideas I'd like to work on next, but the one I keep coming back to is a Detective Noir AU. Writing period pieces allows me to do a lot of research which I enjoy, and since Ace Attorney already deals with so much crime and mystery it's easy to imagine the characters set in this classic setting. Plus I just really want to write Phoenix trying to be serious to get the job done which often requires being discreet, and Maya as his sassy assistant who'd much rather kick the door down because she has no patience to be discreet.

4. What are some other fandoms you create for? 

The other fandom I write for is Kingdom Hearts. Specifically centered around the Wayfinder Trio, but I have much love for all the characters and the series.

5. Do you have any past works you'd like to share?

This is my first time writing for the Ace Attorney fandom, so I don't have anything to share from it (yet!) but my favorite work so far is my ongoing AU set written for Kingdom Hearts.

1, 6, and 10!

1. What made you start writing fanfic?

So after years of giving up creative writing for good, I suddenly had ideas for an original story. The problem? I hadn’t written creatively for seven years and was totally rusty. At the time, I had recently finished playing BBS for the first time, and was totally miffed at the foreshadowing of Sora saving Aqua from the Realm of Darkness hahahahaha. XDD I decided then I would give fanfic a try, because I said screw it, Terra needed to be the one to save her. xD But it was mainly for practicing my skills before I commit to original work. I haven’t looked back since. (And like, this has made me a hardcore Terraqua shipper and I’m now off the deep end LMAO).

6. Name three stories you found easy to write.

Well, I’m always complaining that something out there was really difficult to write. xDDD But that’s probably severe anxiety talking most of the time. What I’ve found is that once I try something new, repeating that process comes a lot easier the moment I find discover what my style is. None of my actual stories have been easy to write, but there are chapters that I can think off the top of my head that came naturally to me.

Chapter 8 of Strength, “Conflict” where Lea and Terra end up fighting in Ansem the Wise’s room after Lea realizes that he thinks he has found Xemnas’ Somebody. This was a natural plot point and I knew instantly that I had to do this.

Chapter 4 of Beloved Memories, “A Tale of Stars Pt. 1″ where Terra and Aqua meet for the first time. The moment I realized what kind of backstory I wanted to give Aqua, I knew immediately what direction to take it in (and having the Fox and the Hound as the backdrop, I sold myself on the idea). And I think that finishing the second part to that is going to be just as natural.

Chapter 2 of A Rush of Blood, “One Gain” where Terra meets Aquanort. I knew that this was going to be the ending to this fic the moment I started it, and something at least worked since people have asked me to expand it.

What I also found natural was “Sonne,” where Aqua plays chess with Terranort. This one is just a preview, but I think that the entire second arc where Aqua spends her time as a prisoner in the World That Never Was is going to be easier going than the rest for me.

10. What’s a theme that keeps coming up in your writing? 

Endurance. Hope. The meaning of love. I think the first two go hand in hand, all the stories that have literally saved my life were ones that have shown me that life or a predicament can get hard, but the protagonist kept walking forward regardless. It told me I could endure as well. Hope is very important, even when it gets really dark. And love… There are many ways to love, and there are many ways to express that sort of thing, whether it is through camaraderie or friendship or even philosophically. So I try a lot of small things to express this sort of thing without resorting to confessions or kisses all the time (but I will get there eventually, I have like lots of confessions and kisses planned, and I’m trying -key word- to make them different. I’m just the slowest burner in this fandom LMAO).

Why I like her: She’s both sweet and cheeky and knows how to be sassy towards both of her friends. She’s also very courageous and wants to follow her boys into battle :)

Why I don’t: I hate how she barely gets any screen time, but it’s not her fault, it’s SE’s fault

Favorite scene: The KH2 ending. I love her interaction with Sora so much :3

Favorite game: KH2. The other games tend to have her missing or sleeping most of the time, sadly

Favorite line: 

"Thinking of you, wherever you are. We pray for our sorrows to end, and hope that our hearts will blend. Now I will step forward to realize this wish. And who knows: starting a new journey may not be so hard, or maybe it has already begun. There are many worlds, but they share the same sky — one sky, one destiny."

Favorite outfit: I actually very much love her KH2 outfit! I know a lot of people prefer her KH1 appearance, but I love her KH2 appearance more.

OTP: Sokai obviously. I mean it’s only as if the entirety of KH2 ships it, right, RIGHT?

BrOTP: Kairi with both of her boys. I love how she teases both of them in a friendly way and they need more scenes because the interactions they have are amazing.

Headcanon: I hope she’ll be a good Keyblade Wielder, but one that is focused on magic like Aqua, especially since she has Princess of Heart powers. And seeing how Aqua is eventually able to take on Terra in a fight, Kairi will - given enough time - be able to take on Sora, Riku and Lea in fights, too. But don’t make this happen too quickly.

Unpopular opinion: Her character isn’t undeveloped - she only has few scenes to make her character shine. Also, Sora and Riku both love her dearly as a friend. Just because people tend to be blind and ignore Kairi in favor of the Sora/Riku relationship doesn’t mean they don’t care about her. Every single scene with Kairi and one of her boys shows their friendship and how much the three of them care about and need each other, but you can only see it if you actually look and not if you keep your eyes closed ;)

A wish: MAKE HER A PLAYABLE CHARACTER IN KH3

An oh-God-please-don’t-ever-happen: Don’t make her a powerhouse :/ I want her to be a good and strong Keyblade Wielder, but please do not turn her into a female Terra. I know it’s a popular headcanon, but I don’t think it suits her. 

Five words to describe her: cheeky, sassy, sweet, trusting, loyal

My nickname for her: Maaaaybe Kai from time to time. I definitely headcanon though that Sora calls her Kai :)

I just want you to know that you literally asked me the two hardest questions in that entire list. As if I can say anything good about my writing, hahaha. C’est la vie.

24. favorite scene you’ve ever written

I feel like this changes over time, especially since I’m writing so much. Right now, it’s definitely the first Coco flashback where Terra and Aqua paint calaveras (sugar skulls) on each other, from Chapter 25 of Strength to Protect the Things That Matter. Not only did I have a hell of a fun time writing that one out, I really indulged in the sexual tension. I probably would have teased Terra about it myself if I was there. I guess that’s why I enjoyed writing it out - I was making fun of Terra in my own head, hahahaha.

25. favorite line you’ve ever written

This is where it gets way, way harder for me. I feel like my prose sucks so bad that I don’t have any good lines whatsoever. But I have dabbled in the second to last chapter of Beloved Memories, in Notes. Judging by how many stories I have planned for that so far, this is currently slotted at Volume XIV, and it’s still untitled (although the final one has a title, haha). It’s going to take from Eraqus’ perspective, because I really wanted to explore memories with Xehanort. So it comes in and out of the present, where Eraqus is hosting a party and is observing Terra and Aqua, very aware of how they are feeling over each other even though he doesn’t talk about it with them. And here are some lines from that:

“Eraqus would never say that the life of a Keybearer was one of many blessings. But there was a happiness that made itself known each time they looked at each other.”

and…

“Terra eventually agreed to dance. It was foreseeable why he never did so in public, since he insisted on stomping the ground with each step he took. As Eraqus watched Aqua laugh and try to coax her dance partner into relaxing, overhearing how she tried to teach him through words associated with martial arts. For someone who should have been embarrassed, Terra paid attention to her words like there was no one else in the room.

In that moment, he knew that what was to come was inevitable. And he prayed for a blessing. May time be forgiving to them both.”
