Mainstream Smartphone Light-Field Capture

Light-field capture will become pretty commonplace and be on the back of all smartphones. It may not exist as Lytro has invented it so far--light-field capture only requires an array of cameras of moderate resolution. Since the available ocular distance of any light-field photo is limited by the width of its capturing surface, the microlens array will take up all room available on the back of the phone (This will reenforce the large size of smartphones). High-resolution 3D photos will then become mainstream.

I recently took ownership of a Lytro camera. It's a light-field camera, of which one of the benefits is the ability to change focus after the shot has been taken. I'll be posting a lot of these types of shots to Tumblr, so keep paying attention. I should be heading to Magic Kingdom tomorrow, and I've got some cool shots in mind!

So go ahead, try it on out. Click around the picture and change the focus. Click and hold, then move your mouse around. You can even change the perspective a bit!

Have you heard about Lytro?

Every once in a while some new technology comes along that feels like it has the potential to really change things. The first time I truly understood what Lytro’s Light Field Camera was capable of I knew it had the potential to shake up how we think about photography. I’d seen posts about Lytro on tech blogs, but it wasn’t until I played around with the demonstrations on the company’s website that I understood the way the Light Field camera allows users to refocus and change the perspective of photographs after they’ve been taken. If you haven’t checked out their site I recommend it highly.

Since learning about Lytro, I’ve followed news about their company and products closely. It only seems like a matter of time before this technology trickles down into other devices or becomes more widely available.

Recently, I was delighted when I came across a post about the Samsung Galaxy S5’s new camera that allows users to refocus their photos after they’ve been taken! This new camera is not nearly as robust as Lytro’s. You can’t change perspective at all or the focus as dramatically with the Galaxy S5. But despite that, the Galaxy’s camera is seriously cool.

I’m not sure that the camera is enough to convince me to switch from my beloved iPhone, but it certainly makes me take notice. I hope to see a lot more from Lytro and related photography innovations in the future.

The Lytro, a Light Field Camera

The Lytro Camera is a different camera than our average DSLRs, Point & Shoots, or Smart Phones; it's a Plenoptic Camera. These are also referred to as light-field cameras.

The Lytro is revolutionary because it is the FIRST light field camera. Unlike our lenses, the Lytro captures every trace of light at every point in space. This is what is meant by light-field. A field of light is the three dimensional field that contains light.

What's the difference? My DSLR is cooler and looks like I know what I'm doing when that thing looks like a telescope!

The Lytro captures the whole field of light. Our normal cameras only capture a two dimensional image. What's so great about capturing a light field? After you've taken the shot, you are given the opportunity to adjust the focus and other variables to perfect the image.

This technological advancement is thanks to a new type of lens that takes the main image and then runs the shot through a large array of micro-lenses.
