the space story is fairell works for USP- united space psomething- as a scavenger/salvager. she goes to planets where colonization failed and retrieves important/expensive stuff, documents, anything left behind by colonists. her job is to find the important stuff before the planets nature takes it first. nisk tags along as her backup/bodyguard/general companion. can he talk? i unno

soleils job is to go these same planets and revive the life. attempting to colonize a planet usually means the colonizers killed the wildlife in an effort to control it and killed the planet in the process. USP is not known for being kind or subtle. soleil doesn’t so much revive so much as reanimate bones. the bones that float around her are a mystery but she keeps them dear.

conflict comes from that soleil cannot differentiate between fairell and UPS, and fairell is (willfully?) ignorant that USP is a giant shitlord empire. fairell thinks it’s wrong to mess with bones, that it’s a mockery of their deaths. soleil blames fairell for the deaths in the first place. somehow they keep showing up on the same planet in the same abandoned cities and towns.
