it’s raining, which is why she’s in the shop in the first place. several others have given the girl and her crow a strange look, but a glare from the child is enough to have them on their way. certainly, if she had some place to go, she would merely transport herself there, but she doesn’t. which is a potential problem as it’s still raining, and now it’s starting to get dark. surely the shop will be closing soon, which puts her in a problematic position. she could always compel the woman to let her stay... a thought interrupted by the churning in her stomach. crinkling her nose, arana pulls what’s left of the money she’s... borrowed and sets it on a table to count. a frown. she doubts she’ll get much with a couple crinkled bills and a few coins. “damn,” she mumbles to herself. what a predicament.

the young girl doesn’t say anything, kicking her feet that don’t quite reach the ground where she sits. a mature mind in a child’s body, seeking the words that the boy offers but feeling an inherent defiance at them being offered in the first place. arana doesn’t think she’s not good enough -- she’s thinks she’s fine. the problem is that she doesn’t think there’s anyone worth being good enough for. everyone is a liar, fake. they want to use her powers or send her away where they can experiment. or worse, stick her with a family as if she won’t watch that family grow old without her. dmitri caws lightly from her shoulder to ease her growing agitation. still, her twelve year old personality finally spits back a “yeah, well. whatever.”

“You are never too young to learn our national ‘no snitching’ policy.“ (sydney @ arana!)

arana scowls at the other, shooting her a look. “i’m older than you think,” the girl replies, the crow on her shoulder ruffling in response to her bristling anger, hackles raised and ready. but she says no more than that vague response -- nearly two hundred years has taught arana words are a war waged against whomever lets them win. she will not. still frowning, her eyes turn back to the arriving police officer. as if she would admit to anything that could out her position to those who seek her. as if she would let anyone have the upper hand. and regardless, she may not know or trust the other girl, but children are inherently better than adults in arana’s mind, and she would never hand over another child to an adult no matter what that child did, unless it was in interest of her own self-preservation (though she is more than capable of handling any issues that arise without being a traitor). 

fingers flex, fire spinning in her mind, ready, waiting. “just let me deal with this, okay?”

“Coincidence and fate figure largely in our lives.” Dan at Arana

to any passers-by, this would seem a strange thing to witness -- an older man sitting with a younger girl, who could arguably pass for his daughter, and a large, almost comically sized crow on the park bench beside them, talking of philosophical ideas. but arana only sips at her hot cocoa, saying nothing for a period of time. she’s technically old enough to both grasp and debate the issue, but her development is still largely twelve years old. she is more interested in the families walking by, the squirrels darting around the trees than in discussing potential ideologies. nevertheless, kicking her legs a little, she replies, “fate is a construct created by humanity in order to attempt to control what we don’t know. coincidence is just an excuse when it works, and we are surprised.” she takes another sip of her drink, licking her lips. “people like us... outside general humanity -- fate and coincidence have nothing to do with us. we just exist unfortunately.”

she may be close to two centuries old, but she’s still a child. her mind never matured past a childlike state, even if her wisdom has been learned over the years, and she craves protection in only the way a child can. it’s raining and it’s cold and ari isn’t used to trusting anyone but dmitri, so at first the familiar voice has her tensing. but there’s an umbrella over her head and even if she hasn’t explained everything, there’s a certain... strange feeling of safety around the man. and she hesitates a moment before throwing her tiny arms around his waist, unable to properly express her thanks. and even when she lets go, she keeps one hand loosely clinging to dan’s shirt. an anchor. a safety net. comfort.

arana absently licks at a lollipop she easily lifted from another child’s bag. kids these days are so simple minded, it hardly takes any wiggling of her fingers to get them to forget she was there. halloween is for children, as far as she’s concerned, but the candy is nice, and at least nobody on the street questions the crow sitting on her shoulder. one kid even commended her ‘excellent animation’. frowning, she turns to where her familiar is cawing at a stranger. “dmitri thinks you’re suspicious.”

she nearly jumps out of her skin at the voice -- nobody was supposed to be watching. damn. even so, the child just clenches her jaw, scowling as she blatantly continues to magic the money out of someone’s pocket. she needs it more anyway. “none of your business. go away.”
