days had passed since he’d found ellie at st. mary’s hospital with a tape confirming joel had lied to her. he knew she’d eventually find out, he knew he couldn’t keep the truth hidden forever, but he hoped he could. her knowing wouldn’t make a difference, it wouldn’t change the past - it wouldn’t fix anything. he caved under her stare that day, the intensity in her gaze & he knew she was telling the truth when she said he had only one more chance before she left forever. 

days had passed & joel hadn’t been able to catch ellie - when he did, she refused to speak. it hurt beyond compare, it froze the blood in his veins to be around ellie when she hated him like this. he didn’t regret choosing her, he didn’t want to take it back. he didn’t regret it. she was worth the guilt. 

it was dark out, but the light from inside the house illuminated the porch just enough to announce joel’s presence in his favorite chair, as did the quiet sounds of his guitar. eyes shot up at movement in the corner of his eye. facial featured softened immediately, “...hey.”

When Dina heard the knocking at her door, the last person she expected to see was Ellie standing there on her porch. She felt a whole maelstrom of emotions hit her at once, but more than anything else she felt relieved. She really thought Abby would have killed her this time but to see Ellie there now, breathing and sporting new cuts and bruises, made everything else dissolve around them. Her knees damn well near gave out from under her. She half-staggered forward, hands reaching for the porch railing to help regain her center of gravity. “You’re back,” she breathed, still reeling a bit. ‘I’m so, so sorry. You didn’t deserve that.’

It took a minute for the woman to process the fact that Ellie was really here and not some illusion created from her grief. God, she looked so beat up and tired. “Shh... that doesn’t matter right now---” Having finally regained some of the strength in her legs, Dina closed in the gap between them in a few rushed steps and drew the taller woman into a desperate kiss. “I forgive you,” she said upon pulling away and cradling Ellie’s face within her hands. Her voice was just above a whisper now and it wavered the more choked up she became. 

This was... so overwhelming.

“I love you and I forgive you. But don’t ever do something like that again.” Their foreheads came to touch and she closed her eyes, letting the tears trail down her face. Her thumbs tenderly stroked those freckled cheeks. “Do you hear me? Don’t break my heart again, Ellie. Please.” It felt so good to press herself against the familiar frame of her lover. To just breathe her in again... She had taken one of Ellie’s hoodies with her back to Jackson. It was the only thing she had not left behind in the wake of her departure from the farmhouse.

it’s almost adorable in the most heartbreaking way, as ellie sits on the couch doing that little thing where she wrings her hands when she’s nervous. j.j.’s finally down for a nap, so it’s not surprising to see ellie’s agitations rising without their baby to serve as a distraction. 

“ c’mere. “ dina doesn’t know what ellie’s thinking, or what she sees in those moments when she stares out into space, but doesn’t ask. she’s taking a break from insisting ellie talk about it. so instead, she silently holds out her arms, waits for ellie to take her hands. there’s hardly any hesitation and dina pulls the two of them into the center of their living room, placing ellie’s hands on her waist before wrapping her own arms around ellie’s neck.

and they stay like that for a while, dancing alone in their home to no music— just the soft hum of dina’s voice in ellie’s ear.

His hand tightens around her shoulder — not enough to harm, but enough to stop the impending flight. It’s etched into the lines of her face, muscles drawn taught like a bowstring ready to fire. He watches her panicked eyes dart around, sizing up her circumstances as he does the same. A cornered animal is the most dangerous — but she’s no threat to him. She’s just a child.

It’s his soft spot, and he’s neither unaware nor ashamed of it. Children and misfits — and misfit children the most so. That’s what they all are, after all, him and the rest of the Fletching & Moondrop troupe. She’ll fit right in around here.

Ellie pouts, as Chloe snickers at her bound up arm. She was hoping the sprain would be gone by the time she came back, but no. The day after her and Dina decided to climb as high as they could climb, Chloe was back. Ashamed and embarrassed, green eyes dart away as she doesn’t meet her eye. She feels stupid and the older woman’s laughter certainly didn’t help.

“Well…I may have made a stupid decision.” The teen grumbles, her foot kicking at the dirt underneath her feet. Cheeks flush red from embarrassment, before she lets out a huff. “It doesn’t mean you get to laugh at it!”

〚 ❣ 〛 It was a simple supply run, a typical one week run at that. Quick trip to the nearest city, grab what they can, and go back. In and out, quick as a whip. Chloe has left on runs and come back to drama before; it’s impossible to live in a settlement like this and not get cabin fever every so often. But when she leaves and comes back to Ellie’s arm bandaged up and tucked into a makeshift sling, it almost feels appropriate. 

“Ellie, we’ve all done stupid things that get us laughed at,” she says, forcing herself to stop laughing, though her smile stays despite herself. It feels strangely refreshing to have something so mundane happen, and Chloe can’t help her bit of amusement at the situation. But, Ellis is obviously hurt, and not just because of her arm. Her smile softens as she runs one hand, briefly, through Ellie’s hair.

“But you’re right, I shouldn’t have laughed. How does it feel?” In truth, she’s grateful she isn’t hurt worse. Ellie is resourceful, but not always the most cautious.

When she first met her, Ellie threatened to blow her brains out if she moved... And being the kind of person who’d rather instinctively make such a situation as that worse than attempting to defuse, Alita encouraged her to do it. She prefers to engage every single possible conflict that looked her in the eyes. 

It’s been a couple months since then... Maybe. Who keeps track of time anymore, anyway? If it hadn’t been for the mass of infected interrupting their altercation, maybe things would have ended different. But right now, Ellie is the only person she has and has had since she lost Ido. 

“ So now that we have a moment of peace, why don’t you tell me about your tattoo? ” Her eyes are narrowed as she leaned over for a closer look. “ It looks like a butterfly. Is it just to cover the bite on your arm? ”
