Evolution
As long as we're talking about guns ...
I understand people’s fascination with firearms. I get that many Americans get a form of “enjoyment” out of shooting them.
What I do not get — nor will I ever understand, more than likely — is the fascination with assault rifles, killing machines that shoot large amounts of ordnance in very little time.

A different view of the M-14, without the inserted magazine.
The rifle I qualified on in 1968 - MCRD San Diego - well, the rifle range at Camp Pendleton, to be more exact. I shot 214 - Sharpshooter
Oh. Yeah. The rifle’s an M-14 - a wonderful piece which was being phased out even as I was qualifying on it. We were issued M-16s in Staging Battalion, before we shipped out to WestPac.

U.S. Marine PFC. Jerry D. Goff of St. Louis MO. examines a split barrel of his M-14 rifle which was hit square in the bore by Viet Cong sniper bullet during exchange of fire with guerrillas at My Song, south of DaNang. Goff was slightly wounded in the face by the freak occurrence.
